I agree with Judy - on the 1851 he is a Stationer's Assistant, although he appears to have had an Apprentice in 1841 so I wonder what happened? Hi Ruth, Judy and All, Many thanks to Ruth and Judy. I did not mention I had him and what he did in 1851 as I was not sure it was the same person but then noticed he was living in the same place so that pretty well makes it certain. Yes Ruth, something appears to have happened to set him back but he is described later in life as an annuitant and later living on own means so it appears he recovered. But what happened will probably forever remain a mystery. Thanks again, Christine From: Ruth Appleby Sent: Sunday, October 09, 2011 2:18 PM To: jlester@btinternet.com ; christinebenson313@btinternet.com ; london@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [LON] Occupation of William BENSON I agree with Judy - on the 1851 he is a Stationer's Assistant, although he appears to have had an Apprentice in 1841 so I wonder what happened? Hi Christine Although he has an apprentice in the same household in 1841, it does not necessarily mean he was his apprentice, as you know that information was not recorded in 1841, many people had lodgers or boarders , even those with a servant (many were more or less a general dogsbody than a maid or servant as we know them) Just a thought Looking in the Directories of the period I could not see a William BENSON as a stationer, there was a Thomas Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hi Ruth, Judy and All, > > Many thanks to Ruth and Judy. Hi Nivard, Thanks for that. It is not the first time the COURT name has cropped up and I am investigating the possible connection. I don't think Thomas can be connected with me but I will keep him in mind just in case.
