Hi All, William BENSON, my ggg-uncle was born c1806 in Carlisle, Cumberland, but in 1851 he was living in Marylebone with a wife Elizabeth who was born in Wasing, Berkshire, c 1801. He lived in the London area until at least 1891 when he was living in Hammersmith. Elizabeth died between 1861 and 1871. I have all the censuses in between but not the 1841. I have not got the marriage. There are no signs of children. In 1891, however he is a boarder at age 85 and also a boarder is Elizabeth E. BENSON aged 30 (1861) born London. He is a widower and she is single. So is this a pure coincidence or are they related? Looking for Elizabeth E. in other censuses I find her as a boarder in Lambeth in 1881 aged 20, but in 1871 the only Elizabeth E. is only 5 (1866) born Lambeth, Surrey and living in Wandsworth with an uncle and aunt William and Caroline DUCE. There is also an Elizabeth aged 9 living with mother Margaret, a widow, in St. George in the East. In spite of the age gap I prefer the first and wonder if she could have added a few years to her age when living independently. However it could be that neither are correct! There is a birth of an Elizabeth Eliza BENSON born Oct-Dec 1865 Lambeth, London which would match the first, but would not prove she is the same person as in 1871 and 1881. I know I could order the birth certificate but would like to see if anyone has any ideas first. What are people's thoughts on the above and the connection, or not, between William and Elizabeth E.? Does London have any sites which might be useful to me in looking up BMD records like some other counties have? Why Lambeth, Surrey (above)? I know boundaries have changed (but I don't know the details) But I am never sure what is London, what is Middlesex, (does it exist anymore) and whether to put old addresses or modern into Ancestry (say) as sometimes it insists a place is in London when I enter it but the search results put it elsewhere!!! Any information / ideas gratefully received, Christine
