Hi Can someone please let me know if there is a search facility for actors circa 1860 Michael
You could try looking at the Theatre UK webpage http://freepages.theatre.rootsweb.com/~jassie/. or the linked Theatre UK mailing list > Subscribing. Clicking on one of the shortcut links below should work, but if your browser doesn't understand them, try these manual instructions: to join THEATRE-UK-L, send mail toTHEATRE-UK-L-request@rootsweb.com with the single word subscribe in the message subject and body. To join THEATRE-UK-D, do the same thing with THEATRE-UK-D-request@rootsweb.com. > • Subscribe to THEATRE-UK-L > • Subscribe to THEATRE-UK-D (digest) Anne On 27 Jul 2011, at 17:15, Michael wrote: > Hi > > Can someone please let me know if there is a search facility for actors > circa 1860 > > Michael
Michael, I don't think there is any single complete answer to this, speaking as someone who has recently written a book on a biographical subject who is thought in his early days to have been an actor. I have found sources of information quite diverse. Could you perhaps say more about the nature of your search? One of the most useful lists I know is the index to Boase's work, "Modern English Biography" (1897), since it includes, additionally, actors' stage names, which are sometimes not the same as their real names.
