I have a problem, which I am hoping someone may be able to shed some light on, or at least, offer an alternative interpretation on the following circumstances: I have a ROBERT COULDERY who marries CHARLOTTE HALL on 2 Jul 1811 in St. George's, Bloomsbury (Ancestry copy of record of marriage) and the witnesses are Anna Marie Knox??? and Thomas Martin? I have records from the IGI showing the following children born: Mary born 1806 in Kent Robert Hall Couldery born 28 Jul 1806 in Lewisham Charlotte baptized 8 Oct 1807 in Greenwich Henry born 11 Aug 1811 in Greenwich Caroline baptized 13 Jan 1814 in Greenwich Eliza born 9 Jan 1818 in Greenwich Alfred born 23 Jun 1819 in Greenwich William Lovelace Couldery born 30 Nov 1822 in Greenwich On this basis, it seems that the first 3 children were born before they married. Fair enough. So far so good, but there is also ANOTHER marriage record on Ancestry showing ROBERT COULDERY marriage to CHARLOTTE HALL on 16 Apr 1822 in Whitechapel. This time the witnesses are Isaac Cooke? and Sarah Binfield. Also, he now states that he is a widower!!! Since Ancestry is showing images of the original documents I cannot conclude that there is a mistranscription on the first marriage registration. But this means that I cannot make sense of these documents unless they married for a second time for some obscure reason which I cannot think of. Can anybody please suggest how I interpret this information? With kind regards and best wishes to all Helen
Helen, I don't think a married person could marry again without getting a divorce first no matter if it were the same person. Maybe, for some reason, the first marriage was found to be illegal. It was the first marriage Robert is recorded as a widower. Also, the son Robert is baptised 14 Sept 1806 as Robert Hall "base born" son of Charlotte Hall and Robert Couldery. The first child appears on IGI as ROBERT COULDERY OR HALL Birth: 28 JUL 1806 Christening: 14 SEP 1806 Saint Mary, Lewisham, London, England Father: ROBERT COULDERY Mother: CHARLOTTE HALL Note: the 1811 is at Whitechapel the 1822 in Bloomsbury and he is Widower in 1811 and she spinster - but no status shown 1822 except of this parish which seems wrong as they live in Greenwich An unusual name so perhaps all marriage are him Based on above: He was married and wife disappeared and he then lived with Charlotte - they were very honest when baptising first child. Finally they marry at Whitechapel and perhaps use something like the seven year rule (ie wife presumed deceased) or just lie. Later they find out actual death of first wife and re-marry And there is perhaps him or son to Lydia Frances Ruigg/Ruegg in 1829 in Holborn and indeed there is a baptism of Charlotte Lydia Couldery in 1831 in Greenwich to that couple. He is a butcher living at Stable yard Now Eliza baptised 1818 at Greenwich to Robert and Charlotte also shows butcher and living at Stable yard. So possibly the 1822 marriage is actually the son - born 28 Jul 1806 so 15 in 1822 - boys could marry at 14 back then. Perhaps this Charlotte is a cousin of his mother.
