Hello Everybody, I have seen queries from people asking how to use the new systems regarding births and deaths. The following information has been gleaned from another Rootsweb mailing list and hopefully will assist. I registered on Friday last week and have had a great deal of success from the new facilities. Regards, Rod in Hampshire Extract The GRO have put the historic Birth & Death Indexes online for the first time and they are providing extra information that is not available in the original printed indexes used by FreeBMD, Ancestry etc. In Birth Indexes, you will see the mother's Maiden name that did not appear in the printed indexes until 1911: and in the Death Indexes you will see the age at death pre-1865. All this is valuable information that can't be found anywhere else. First go to http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ and click on "Order Certificates online". On the next page you will find a message "New functionality available". You need to either log-in or register to go further. You will then be sent a verification code by E-mail that you need to enter on the web site. Then you can make a search. You choose between a birth or death. For births, enter the surname of the person and their year of birth 2 years and their gender, as a minimum, and then press "Search" and the index data appears at the bottom of the page. You can make a search between 1837 and 1915. For deaths, you can search from 1837 to 1957 and the procedure is the same. All of the above can be done without charge!
