    1. [LON] Notice in "London Public Ledger and Daily Advertiser", 1829
    2. Bruce Murduck via
    3. Hello Listers, I wonder if anyone can offer suggestions as to how I might obtain a copy of a notice which apparently appeared in the "London Public Ledger and Daily Advertiser" on 29 January 1829? This particular edition is apparently available through NewspaperArchive.com, but I don't have a subscription, and cannot take one out. Does it exist anywhere else? Any help appreciated, and Thanks in advance, Bruce Murduck Kingston, Ontario, Canada

    1. [LON] RC church in the East End

    3. Many thanks to those who contributed answers to the query re RC parishes in the East End. I have members of an Irish Catholic family [Fell] who were residing Rosemary Lane [Royal Mint Street] c 1841 One child, Lawrence was born Pennington Street in 1840 and baptised at the Virginia Street Chapel.27 Aug 1840 I haven't been able to find the baptism for his sister Rosa who was born about 1835. The parents Lawrence FELL and his wife Eliza ALBERT were married at St Dunston in the East in 1835. Would Virginia Street Chapel have been the most likely place for Rosa's baptism? If so I was unable to find her there. [She could of course been born before the marriage :) ] I was able to purchase some years ago from the Roman Catholic Archives copies of transcripts of the registers of several churches in the general area . [which I can't find at the moment :( ] Any suggestions welcome. Judy Qld Australia

    2. Clare Dubay via
    3. Hello List I have a Roman Catholic family of Irish origin who lived in London for only a few years: arriving after 1854 and leaving before 1863. The parents were James and Esther Lawler. Twins Thomas and Joseph were born in 1856, but Joseph died the following year. The youngest son, James was born in 1860. All of these birth and death records give the registration district as Stepney. I do have an 1860 address that places the family in Pearl St, St Georges East. Can anyone please help me with the RC parish to which this family would have belonged, as I am hoping to locate baptism records for these children. I cannot seem to find a local church that was extant in 1860. TIA Clare in Australia

    3. The Roman Catholic hierarchy in England And Wales wasn't re-established after the reformation until 1850 so administrative boundaries -- dioceses - didn't exist. The church was "governed" (not the right word) by Vicars Apostolic. One of the most useful backgrounds is at : http://www.stgite.org.uk/media/romancatholics.html It seems that the Virginia Street Chapel mentioned on the stgite site was replaced by the Church of St Mary and St Michael on Commercial Road. around 1856/57 http://parish.rcdow.org.uk/commercialroad/ The articles suggest that registers were extant so it might be worth contacting St Mary and St Michael to see if they know what happened to them. An alternative would be the Archdiocese of Wesminster http://rcdow.org.uk There used to be a contact for an archivist but I cannot find one now. You could try emailing the admin office at Vaughan House [email protected] The Parochial Registers and Records Measure 1978 applies only to the Church of England , nevertheless it might also be worth while emailing the London metropolitan Archive to see if they have anything [email protected] or you try searching their online catalogue. Stepney is in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets so again it might be worth contact their archive dept. [email protected] Someone mentioned the church in Poplar, I worked in the school next door about 40 years ago once or twice I remember walking to Stepney so it was certainly "do able" in the 1850s. http://parish.rcdow.org.uk/poplar/about-the-parish/ There is also St Anne's http://parish.rcdow.org.uk/underwoodroad/about-the-parish/ which was also built around the same time. Good Luck !! 3. Thank you John, there's a huge amount of information there which I will enjoy reading... I have all my fathers log books so I know when and where he flew and all those different aircraft... amazes me that they hopped in and flew something with just that little blue book of notes. We've had a flight in a warbird here and the pilot was so excited to see the notes for his plane! 2. Caroline Gaden via
    3. Hello Listers I hope this is the correct list to cover St Paul's Cathedral... apologies if it is not. I am writing a story about my father's war time service as a pilot in the Air Transport Auxiliary. I understand there is a memorial plaque for ATA folk who died during service. I believe it is at St Paul's and was unveiled in 1950. One source says it is in the graveyard and another that it is located in a crypt. I've done Google searches to try and find a photograph of this memorial but I can't find one which shows what it looks like or the inscription. I'm now wondering if the memorial has been damaged/removed. I've emailed St Paul's but to date have had no response. Can anyone please point me in the right direction to find that elusive photo Many thanks Caroline NSW Australia
