    3. Hi Eve, As far as I know the only 2 tests available to you are mtDNA (maternal line) and Autosomal (Family Finder). The second is the only one at all useful to you for what you want. But it is very hit and miss. You might be lucky and find a first paternal cousin has also tested. But the chances are you will end up with a list of names which you cannot connect to you. That is my situation at present. However, DNA tests are becoming more popular and as they do it will be easier to match. Also, if you could get a maternal relative (not sibling) to test then any matches you both share are highly unlikely to have anything to do with your paternal line. You will get your ethnic mix with this test (at least with the firm I tested with). But I know of no easy answer. Christine -----Original Message----- From: Eve Ferguson via Sent: Tuesday, July 07, 2015 3:48 PM To: London London Subject: [LONDON] DNA Hello All Does anyone know if I can, as a female with no Brothers, find the race/origins of my Paternal Grandfather with the newer DNA tests? I have my Fathers Maternal line back to 1480 but I have no idea who my Grandfather was, which leaves a whole section of my Tree blank. I have searched all the records available but "Father unknown" on my Fathers BC seems to be the "end" unless DNA can show origins, not much but better than nothing. 3. I am trying to find a birth record for John GALLEY (or GALLY/GALLI), son of Silvester John (James) GALLY and Mary Ann HARE (or Ayres), who was born about July, 1868 in either Whitechapel or Mile End. I ordered a certified copy of an entry of birth from the GRO, but they can't find any record of the birth. The 1871 census for Tower Hamlets shows a John GALLY, age 29 (which I'm sure is 2 years, 9 months) living at 1 Roberts Place, and the place of birth is Mile End. The 1881 census for Tower Hamlets shows a John GULLEY, age 13 living at 3 Roberts Place, and the place of birth is Whitechapel. The 1891 census for Leytonstone, Essex shows a John GALLEY age 22 living at 14 Burgess Rd., Leyton, Essex and the place of birth is Commercial Rd., London The 1901 census for Leytonstone, Essex shows a John GALLERY age 32 living at 71 Southwell Grove Rd., Leyton and the place of birth is Whitechapel. The 1911 census for Leytonstone, Essex shows a John GALLEY age 43 living at 8 Southwell Grove Rd., Leytonstone and the place of birth is Whitechapel. I believe that part of Commercial Rd lies in Whitechapel, so it would appear that 4 of the 5 census show John as being born @ Whitechapel. Can anyone help? Dennis Galley, Port Elgin, Ontario, Canada

    3. I am trying to identify the people and location of the house in two old family photos.(Click on dropbox links below). A Citroen car appears in front of their home, which is said to be on the banks of the R.Thames.In the front seat of the car photo is my great aunt and her husband, and in the back seat her daughter ,who is also in the other photo with her two sons.Names not known other than the great Aunt's maiden name.(Crossen & variants,Crosby or McCrossen?).A deceased aunt wrote on the photos inter alia "on the banks of the Thames River".Where on the Thames is not known.Careful scrutiny of a sign on the house gate has convinced me that a partially obscured letter is a U = ulverton,so maybe Dulverton or Bulverton which may help identifying the house. The type A Citroen Car was first manufactured in 1921,therefore the photo was taken sometime after that year.Their clothes suggest maybe mid 1920's to early 1930's. I have no other info.so any help leading to the location of the house or people would be very much appreciated, Trev. 3. I think the first partly visible letter could be an O, giving (eg) Wolverton. Then the right-hand gate could say House/Lodge/ etc. If it is in England, there is a Wolverton Avenue in Kingston-upon-Thames, with a Wolverton House in it; I haven't been able to identify it with a quick look, but you could play with google maps and images. (I tried there first because of family associations of my own; but there could be masses of other possibilities.) I have used Ancestry,Family Search, free BMD etc for checking on the Census's etc.but no luck.I have also used many variants of Crossen and also McCrossen and Crosby, the latter apparently is the English version of Crossen. I also purchased a number of GRO Birth/Marriage Certificates for a female Crossen but the correct parents not found.I also featured the photos in two English Genealogy Magazines in the hope that some one would recognize the family. The son's life in NZ has been thoroughly researched and yields little info.on the parents.. He was said to be the black sheep of the family and my grandmother divorced him in 1921 in NZ. My G.Grandfather had a daughter as well as the son, and 2 photos(see Links) show her and her husband and their daughter in their car,in front of their house, in one photo and in the other photo the daughter(i.e. my grandfather's niece) is shown again with her 2 sons in the same house on the Thames River.Names are not known.A sign on the gate (partially obscured reads... ulverton.Photo of car taken sometime after 1919 when Type A Citroen was first manufactured.Consensus is the photo was taken late 1820's to early1830'sDetails of the sister's name, birth, marriage and family are not known and all I have are the 2 photos as in the 2 drop box links: https://www.dropbox.com/sc/wbdioizksrl5xqa/AABpC1tBMJqhQHCF8DUT3khja & https://www.dropbox.com/sc/lztrvatuslko1ge/AACM4Roq2tH6cxvPvJ2E6kV0a ...Photos came from an aunt, long deceased. Guessing their ages I came up with: Older son =14years His mother = 45 years Her mother= 65 to 70 years. Assuming the photo was taken about c1930, the mother(sister of my grandfather and the older lady in the car) would have been born 1860 to 1865.I would value more opinions as to the ages of the people in the car and/or when the photo was taken. I have used Ancestry,Family Search, free BMD etc for checking on the Census's etc.but no luck.I have also used many variants of Crossen and also McCrossen and Crosby, the latter apparently is the English version of Crossen. I also purchased a number of GRO Birth/Marriage Certificates for a female Crossen but the correct parents not found.I also featured the photos in two English Genealogy Magazines in the hope that some one would recognize the family. In asking for help from the list,I realize there is so little to work on but hopefully some one may have suggestions as to further research and guestimates as to ages of the people in the pics. Please contact me with any queries Thanks in anticipation. Trev. Valler. NZ --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. http://www.avast.com

    3. Westminster Cathedral opened in 1903. The predecessor church was St Mary, Horseferry Road, but according to the register transcripts he was not baptised there. Given the circumstances, it is possible that the baptism was performed privately at home. Judy London, UK -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of mo1rauk via Might the baptism have been held at the Roman Catholic Westminster Cathedral? Or was the baptism at a time when there were rules against Catholics. -------- Original message -------- From: Nicholas Wilson via <[email protected]> Subject: [LON] re. ROMAN CATHOLIC BAPTISMS London 1814 Further to my earlier email on this subject it has been suggested I post the fellow's name. It is FREDERICK CLAUDIUS JOHN PARKINSON. His father was John P. of the Consular Service and his mother, Frances, the illegitimate daughter of John Thomas Foster, the then husband of Lady Elizabeth Foster, nee Hervey, who later was to become the Duchess of Devonshire upon her friend, Georgiana's death. My thanks to Judy and Rosemary for their help. Nick
