In the early years of civil registration a lot of people didn't register at all. It's pretty hit or miss, particularly in 1837. As time went by more people registered and I think sometime in the 1870's it was mandatory. Mike, Baptism records for Wapping show Charles Henry Selvey, son of Joseph and Mary baptised 9 July 1823 at St John of Wapping (birth date given as 25 May 1823). Joseph's occupation is given as mariner. There is a marriage of a Joseph Silvey, of full age, widower, mariner (his father listed as John Silvey, deceased, shoemaker) to Elizabeth Drake, of full age, widow, laundress (father James Higgins, deceased labourer) at St Leonard, Shoreditch on 2 November 1857. (indexed on ancestry as Elizabeth _Drakel_ and Joseph Silvy) It is interesting that there is a marriage at St Leonard Shoreditch between a Joseph Silva, of the Liberty of Norton Folgate, bachelor and Mary Higgins of the same liberty, spinster, a minor (married by banns and with the consent of her parents) on 13 November 1817. (his name clearly Silva on the parish record) However, this does not prove that the Joseph Silvey/Silvy/Silva in each case is the same person, although it seems likely. Marriages pre civil registration do not generally list occupations, ages or names of the father of the consenting parties. All this information is from the collections of London baptisms and marriages on www.ancestry.co.uk. I hope it is helpful for you. Hi Mike. I'm on this list for my Douglas side, but your surnames are familiar to me on my LeHew side. Not sure if your side went to Virginia but there are some early marriages in Shenandoah or Frederick county of Silvey's with a b instead of a v also. Just a tidbit for your research. Put " St Clements Church Camberwell" into Google and you will find plenty of hits returned, from the parish web-site to Genuki. Note the parish is now united with St.Peter's, and though carved out of Camberwell, also called St.Clement, East Dulwich. The churchwas bombed in the last war and rebuilt afterwards. There is also a St Clements Church Camberwell in Australia, recently closed. Kind regards, John Henley
Can anyone tell me if St Clements Church Camberwell is still in existence. Thank you.
My recent research has revealed my great grandfather was baptized as an infant according to the Rites of the R.C. Church by Abbe Voyer (sic) in 1814. He was to be baptized a second time thirteen years later as an Anglican and was brought up as one. Does anyone have information they can share with me on a Catholic community (not necessarily a church) residing in Sloane Square area around this time?. Ten years earlier the child's father had been involved in the British government's efforts to 'offer succour to the laity and clergy' of the persecuted (post 1789) French church, and there may be a connection there. Thanks for any help you can give me, Nick

Hello list, I have been unsuccessful so far in finding out the maiden name of the wife of William Rawlins [d. 1716], a woollen draper from the parish of St Bartholomew. London. In his will, William mentions his wife Martha and sons Thomas, Isaac, Richard and William. Also his sister Anne King, two cousins Elizabeth King and Martha Glentworth. I am also trying to find out who the wife is of William's son Thomas [1695-1733], also a woollen draper. Thomas's will, proved 18 May 1733, did not mention his wife or names of his children, but did note his three brothers Isaac, William and Richard and his sister Hannah Woods. Also mentioned was Aunt Glentworth but with no Christian name. It was evident from his will that his children were all very young at the time. The birth date I have for Thomas Rawlins came from a bible belonging to the husband of his grand-daughter Philadelphia Chater, who was married to Rev. John Neal Lake. The journal "The Political State of the Month of May 1733" stated "4th May 1733 Died - Mr Thomas Rawlins, a Woolen Draper in Cloth Fair." If anyone can help with the above I would be very grateful and if anyone can come up with the birth/baptism details of the children I would be doubly pleased. I have looked at the records on ancestry, Findmypast and the genealogist websites but nothing to categorically prove anything. Regards, Julia York, Western Australia
Hi Listers, I have an ancestor HENRY FARRER who was sentenced in the Old Bailey in 17th September 1806 for transportation for 7 years. He then was on the Retribution Hulk on 1807 at Woolwich and died onboard in 1811. Would he have gone to Newgate between September and 1807 ? Also how can I find any details of him and also any records of his death ? Thanks Maureen Farrer in Oz.
