    3. Beth wrote <<this paragraph was in a newspaper of Nov 1851 and the first instancce that I know of with Mr H marrying is in March of 1852 in Marylebone>> Those dates could be quite consistent with one-another. It all depends on your source for the March 1852 marriage: was that the GRO indexes? If so, then "March 1852" doesn't mean March 1852: it means the quarter ending with March 1852, that is Jan, Feb or Mar 1852. Also, that doesn't mean that the marriage took place during that quarter, but that it was registered centrally in that quarter. Various administrative delays in passing paperwork on could mean that a marriage (or birth or death) could take place in one quarter but be registered centrally in the next. So it is possible that the marriage took place in mid November but appears in the March quarter. Of course, if your source wasn't the GRO indexes then that isn't the explanation. 1. [LON] Death Certificate of Thirza Palmer
    2. David Roberts
    3. Thirza Palmer was born in Langley Burrell, Chippenham, Wiltshire in 1816, and died at 43 Percival Street in 1843, in the Sub District of St James, Clerkenwell. Her brother came to London in the early 1840s and lived on Drury Lane. Another sister, Harriet, lived at 34 Hall Street (Goswell Road). I now have the death certificate for Thirza who died of scrofula. I was hoping that a member of the family might have been present at the death, and would therefore be mentioned on the DC. However the person present was Thomas Knight. I sent for the certificate on the grounds that: - *Thirza is a fairly unusual first name* - *The age is right (27)* - *The address is not too far away from her brother at Drury Lane and her sister at Hall Street.* Does anyone have any ideas how I might tie this down to be certain the she is the family member I seek? Is it likely that she would be in one of the London Directories? I wonder whether she might have been a dressmaker like her sister? Any help would be appreciated. David Roberts

    3. Hi Robert. During the middle of the 19th century most of the churchyards in London were close dot new burials because they were overcrowded and insanitary. So it is likely that your gg grandfather was buried elsewhere in one of the municipal or private cemeteries that were set up mid century. 3. I go along with Val ........... Shadwell road Islington was renamed see here; "The Parish of Saint Mary Islington had constructed a workhouse on Liverpool Road in 1776, after the passing of a Local Act. This meant that it did not come under the juridsiction of the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act. The Board of Guardians was not constituted for the parish of St Mary Islington until 1867. A new workhouse was subsequently constructed on Saint John's Road in Upper Holloway. An infirmary was also built on Highgate Hill, on the site of the Highgate Smallpox Hospital which had been moved. An infant's school was constructed on Hornsey Road in 1853. In 1895 Islington also purchased a disused workhouse on Shadwell Road (later Cornwallis Road) to use as an overflow institution. Source of information: Peter Higginbotham at The Workhouse website." ssage
