Also living there, was boarder, Benjamin WILSON b 1859 Widower who married Emily Selina in December 1911. Alfred's father was Charles John SMITH an able bodied seaman who married Emily Selina in 1906. With this surname, it is difficult to find out what happened to Charles or Alfred. Any suggestions? 1. [LON] SAMUEL FOOT - FOUNDLING
    2. Hello List, I posted this query a few weeks ago but only got one reply so I'm now looking again to see if anyone can come up with any inspirational suggestions! I recently traced the birth of my 3 x gt grandfather to the Thomas Coram Foundling Hospital, where he was admitted in 1802 at the age of 2 months and rebaptised Samuel Foot. His mother was Ann Thomas, born in Devon, a servant working in London, who was 'seduced by promises of marriage' by a certain William Hawkesley, a porter with Mrs Sheldon of 7 Milk Lane, Cheapside. Needless to say, the marriage never materialised and William disappeared from the face off the earth, evading all attempts by the Foundling Hospital authorities to track him down! Ann Thomas was apparently of 'good general character', apart from this one unfortunate lapse, but, after Samuel's admission to the Foundling Hospital, she too vanishes. I would like to see if I can trace either William or Ann. William does not appear in the 1841 Census so may have died; neither does Ann - she may have married or died. I can find no marriage or death record for either William or Ann in civil registration, London/Devon Parish records or Pallot's index. I've combed Ancestry using a birth date from 1760 onwards for either of them but no even vaguely suitable candidates have emerged. The Foundling Hospital records do not mention either Ann or William after the initial enquiries into Ann's petition to admit Samuel to the Hospital. Mrs Sheldon of Milk Lane seems to have moved on by 1841 as well. Samuel, incidentally, was indentured as an apprentice on 4 Aug 1818 to Thomas West, a surveyor, of 98 High St in the parish of St Mary le Bone. He was to be instructed in household matters and the business of a surveyor. New indentures were drawn up for him on 20 Feb 1820 to a Mr Stillies/Stillion (?), a tailor of 5 Pancras St, where Samuel would be instructed in his business, so apparently the surveying career didn't work out. In the 1841 Census, he is listed as 'in prison'. Anyone got any ideas where I can look now or what line of investigation I should follow? Many thanks, Jennifer

    1. Re: [LON] St Olave's missing records on Ancestry ?
    2. Judy Lester
    3. Hi Nan, At least three registers of combined marriages/banns from St Olave Bermondsey seem to be missing from Ancestry's collection, covering the period 1754-1772. These three registers do survive at LMA (callmarks P71/OLA/021, 022 and 023). >From the earlier database (1538-1812), the composite register of baptisms, marriages and burials P71/OLA/014 also seems to be missing, covering the period 1747-1777. I believe some of the St Olave registers are in poor condition, so perhaps they were not available for filming by Ancestry? Alternatively, there's a chance they've been filmed but are labelled wrongly in the database. You might want to try looking for them under other Bermondsey parishes. You could also try other St Olave parishes, such as St Olave Hart Street and St Olave Jewry (both in the City of London). Sorry this doesn't help much. Someone else may know more. Otherwise, it may be more productive to contact LMA than Ancestry! HTH Judy London, UK -----Original Message----- From: london-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:london-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of NanDowling@aol.com I have a query regarding the London records on Ancestry , and i should state straight away that i have been in contact with them but as yet to no avail . Basically the problem is a missing segment of approx 29 yrs for the parish records of St Olave's Bermondsey between the years 1747 - 1776 . I have searched for a marriage event which is known to have taken place in 1760 at St Olave's in the index - London - Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921" but St Olave in this index only begins at 1777 onwards . The wider index - London - Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812 - actually shows a break in all St Olave parish records for the era 1748-1776 . It would seem there is abt 29 years of Bap/Marriage/Burial records missing for this parish within these London collections on Ancestry . It may be relevant to also point out that in the Bap's,Marr's & Burials collection , the St Olave records are all in book form , whereas when the marriage records start up again in the 1754-1921 collection they are in the usual "marriage document " format showing name's /date/witness names etc . Ancestry have told me they are unaware of any missing records from their LMA collection but i am wondering if anyone onlist has any knowledge of this Parish and it's records and why there is this apparent gap ?

    3. Pat, if you put CHAMBERS in the last name box and Wandsworth in the place of residence box in the 1911 search at http://www.1911census.co.uk/ you will get a list of all the CHAMBERS living in Wandsworth and you can at least check and see if your family names are there. FMP who are the only ones to have the full 1911 on line at the moment have strict rules against doing look-ups, and you have to pay for it, so it is unlikely anyone else will look for you. This might at least indicate whether it's worth you buying some units. HTH Anne On 16 Apr 2011, at 14:54, Patricia Copeland wrote: > I noticed that Ancestry has 1911 census summary sheets. 3. Have you checked findagrave? http://www.findagrave.com They list two Hanwell Cemeteries in the greater London area. If you know which one is *yours*, you might find the picture already posted there. If it isn't, you can make a request of a findagrave volunteer, who will photograph the stone and post it to the site. It's all quite simple and then can be seen by others researching your family.
