    3. Ruth, Service records for the Met are held at the National Archives, in the series MEPO. Try this research guide. http://tinyurl.com/6982qz5 If your man retired from the Met after 1852 with a police pension, he may be name-indexed in TNA's online catalogue in the series MEPO 21. Some indexing and imaging of the Numerical and Alphabetical Registers in MEPO 4 is available at TNA Your Archives. This may help with finding a warrant number, which is a first step to further research http://tinyurl.com/6gvughm Finally for the Met, you might find this page useful http://www.historybytheyard.co.uk/family_history.htm For the City of London Police, the service records are at LMA. 3. Hello Listers I have just been given a letter dated 1939 and from this letter I have found two worthwhile bits of information. I would like help on where to go to expand on the information. Edward Russell KNAPP born 1872 Great Ilford was farewelled at the Royal Albert Docks in 1894 by his brother Frederick Alexander KNAPP born 1879 Great Ilford. The letter states that Frederick was serving his time at the P&O engineering shops at the time of the farewell.. I know where these brothers finally lived their lives out one in the Philippines and the other in Australia however I have never known until now anything about their departure. Is there SKS out there that can help me find out more. Yours in hope Jenny in Oz

    3. Hi Sarah and Jon, Have looked at Ancestry images, and of the 2, it looks more likely to be the St Martin Ludgate one, as the other was a bookseller. The St Martin Ludgate one was living at Ludgate Hill. His wife was Esther Amery. John was a Vintner. But there ends any reference to that as an occupation in the censuses. In 1841 he was "Ind", living in Finsbury, Islington HO107/664/8....and born in Ireland. He was with Esther, Thomas, 15, and 4 younger daughters. In 1851 he was at 2 Vale Pl, Fulham, and was a clerk, "Daily News Journal". We learn that he was from Dublin, and Esther was born in Wandsworth, Surrey. Quick look didn't find him in 1861...possibly transcribed wrongly. 1871, he (aged 79) and Esther and two unmarried school mistress daughters and a 15 yo grandson, also John, were in Paddington. John was an Annuitant. Could the grandson be Thomas' son from 1st marriage? Thomas' baptism entry is a bit of a dog's breakfast, but I think says, "Said to be born 22nd Nov 1822. Bapt 22 Dec 1822. Recd into the congregation 1st Jan 1824." And the heading on the top of the page says, "St Martin Ludgate in the City of London, 1823"! Hope this is yours, tho will give you more work, I think.... I am researching my g-g-g-grandfather, Thomas LEECH, who was supposedly born in London about 1826. Thomas has been a somewhat elusive character for me, because he moved to America, then back to England, and then back to America where he died in 1908. Thomas & his first wife, Rebecca (an American), were married in 1853 and divorced around 1868/1869 in Memphis, Tennessee. Through a random series of events, I have unearthed a second marriage between Thomas and a young widow named Sarah Therese BROOKS née JONES in Aston, Warwickshire. Their marriage certificate from 25 Nov 1873 listed his father as John LEECH (deceased) and his profession was a "Licensed Victualler". I located the couple living together in Lancashire in the 1881 census, and Thomas listed his birthplace as "Middlesex, London". I am wondering if anyone else is researching a John LEECH who was a publican/tavern-keeper/licensed victualler/etc. living in London around 1826 when Thomas would have been born. If there is any other information I can provide that might be useful, please let me know. Hi Richie The birthplace in 1891 is Turgis (a short distance from Hartley Wespall, which is given as his place of birth in previous censuses and where he appears to have been baptised in 1827 and married in 1851). Edith is indeed enumerated as grand daughter Best wishes Caroline > Seeking help again > 1891 census RG12/1000, page 6 > Philip usher birth place hants ? > Edith usher am I right in assuming she is a grandaughter ? > > Richie in a cool showery bowen > >
