    3. Ruth I googled for this problem and found that Ancestry have a help item on this issue which states "Note: With recent changes in both Internet Explorer for Window Vista or Windows 7 and Ancestry.com, you need to set Ancestry.com as a trusted site before you can print or save record images. For instructions on how to do this, please click here. Note: With recent changes in both Internet Explorer for Window Vista or Windows 7 and Ancestry.com, you need to set Ancestry.com as a trusted site before you can print or save record images. It's always worth googling any computer problem you have for you're probably not the only one to have it and there is normally someone who has posted the solution somewhere. 3. The first child appears on IGI as ROBERT COULDERY OR HALL Birth: 28 JUL 1806 Christening: 14 SEP 1806 Saint Mary, Lewisham, London, England Father: ROBERT COULDERY Mother: CHARLOTTE HALL Note: the 1811 is at Whitechapel the 1822 in Bloomsbury and he is Widower in 1811 and she spinster - but no status shown 1822 except of this parish which seems wrong as they live in Greenwich An unusual name so perhaps all marriage are him Based on above: He was married and wife disappeared and he then lived with Charlotte - they were very honest when baptising first child. Finally they marry at Whitechapel and perhaps use something like the seven year rule (ie wife presumed deceased) or just lie. Later they find out actual death of first wife and re-marry And there is perhaps him or son to Lydia Frances Ruigg/Ruegg in 1829 in Holborn and indeed there is a baptism of Charlotte Lydia Couldery in 1831 in Greenwich to that couple. He is a butcher living at Stable yard Now Eliza baptised 1818 at Greenwich to Robert and Charlotte also shows butcher and living at Stable yard. So possibly the 1822 marriage is actually the son - born 28 Jul 1806 so 15 in 1822 - boys could marry at 14 back then. Perhaps this Charlotte is a cousin of his mother. 3. I do! But not all the time.....I have a laptop and a desktop both running Win-7. I also have the enhanced viewer installed. If I save an image (by just clicking the save button on the image screen) on the PC it saves perfectly. If I do the same on the laptop it will save but the image isn't there when I search for it.... I'm not sure what the problem is, unless it's to do with different processors, but if I disable the enhanced viewer on the laptop it will save and retrieve the image but not to such a high specification, so I have to resave it via the PC for a good quality print. I asked for help on the Computer-Help list but none was forthcoming..... Bit of a pain.... 2. Sarah Torline
    3. Thanks for your response Jan! After looking at the records that Jon sent me (thanks again Jon!) I keep going back and forth on this, but I am still not fully convinced that the St Martin Ludgate record is my Thomas. Every other record I have shows him to be born in 1826 or later. I keep wondering if perhaps the John from the St Pancras Camden record changed his job later in life. Or maybe Thomas didn't know what his father's job had been, and just made something up to put on the marriage certificate. The grandson, John, who is living with John & Esther in 1871 would not be one of Thomas' children. He had 3 children from his first marriage (at least the first marriage that I know of) and they were all born in Memphis, Tennessee. The two oldest children, Laura & Thomas Jr, were enumerated in Lancashire in 1871. They were both attending school. (Finding them going to school there was what led me to find their father getting remarried in 1873) The youngest daughter, Alice, stayed in the states with her mother, Rebecca, after Thomas & Rebecca divorced. All in all, I guess either one of the baptism records that Jon mentioned are possible candidates, but I just don't know. Although I'm still trying to find something more conclusive that would tie my Thomas LEECH to either one of the families that Jon mentioned, I do have some new information on the family of John LEECH living in Ludgate Hill. John LEECH was the landlord of the London Coffee House at Ludgate Hill, which I'm given to understand was a popular establishment. Despite that, John eventually declared bankruptcy in 1832. His son, also named John LEECH (born in 1817-died in 1864), went on to become a caricaturist and illustrator. He illustrated the first edition of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol". (I've spent so much time trying to find a connection to the LEECH family that Beatrix POTTER was descended from that it never occurred to me that there might be another literary connection in the family). ~ Sarah Dallas, TX

    3. Helen, I don't think a married person could marry again without getting a divorce first no matter if it were the same person. Maybe, for some reason, the first marriage was found to be illegal. It was the first marriage Robert is recorded as a widower. Also, the son Robert is baptised 14 Sept 1806 as Robert Hall "base born" son of Charlotte Hall and Robert Couldery. Marg >From the Beautiful British Columbia Cariboo Region, Canada ----- Original Message ----- From: <helencarlisle@q.com> To: <LONDON@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, April 30, 2011 4:12 PM Subject: [LON] Help please re ROBERT COULDERY I have a problem, which I am hoping someone may be able to shed some light on, or at least, offer an alternative interpretation on the following circumstances: I have a ROBERT COULDERY who marries CHARLOTTE HALL on 2 Jul 1811 in St. George's, Bloomsbury (Ancestry copy of record of marriage) and the witnesses are Anna Marie Knox??? and Thomas Martin? I have records from the IGI showing the following children born: Mary born 1806 in Kent Robert Hall Couldery born 28 Jul 1806 in Lewisham Charlotte baptized 8 Oct 1807 in Greenwich Henry born 11 Aug 1811 in Greenwich Caroline baptized 13 Jan 1814 in Greenwich Eliza born 9 Jan 1818 in Greenwich Alfred born 23 Jun 1819 in Greenwich William Lovelace Couldery born 30 Nov 1822 in Greenwich On this basis, it seems that the first 3 children were born before they married. Fair enough. So far so good, but there is also ANOTHER marriage record on Ancestry showing ROBERT COULDERY marriage to CHARLOTTE HALL on 16 Apr 1822 in Whitechapel. This time the witnesses are Isaac Cooke? and Sarah Binfield. Also, he now states that he is a widower!!! Since Ancestry is showing images of the original documents I cannot conclude that there is a mistranscription on the first marriage registration. But this means that I cannot make sense of these documents unless they married for a second time for some obscure reason which I cannot think of. Can anybody please suggest how I interpret this information? With kind regards and best wishes to all Helen

    3. Thank you to all who sent me information regarding the Strand and Strand on the Green. I am searching for my elusive COWDRY ancestors who were brush manufacturers at 40 the Strand in the late 1700's /early 1800s. I have been unable to find the parents or birthplace for WILLIAM, JOHN, RICHARD, GEORGE and JAMES COWDRY. I found a document on A2A which refers to a William Cowdery and his son also named William, leasing property at Strand on the Green-I thought there may have been a connection to William Cowdry living in the Strand. I have found marriages for WILLIAM COWDRY and ESTHER BRANCH on 23 September 1792 at St. Martin In The Fields, and JAMES COWDRY and MARY DRUMMOND on 2 December 1794 at St Martin In The Fields.this may have been James' first marriage. At the time of his death in 1839, WILLIAM COWDRY was living at 40, the Strand. His will was proved at London on 5th July 1839. I am interested in finding further information on JAMES COWDRY. Thank you for any assistance, Barbara

    3. I browsed a few random London directories, 1812-1839. > At the time of his death in 1839, WILLIAM COWDRY was living at 40, the > Strand. His will was proved at London on 5th July 1839. His death at 40 Strand is slightly puzzling, as the brush business seems to have been at that address earlier in the century, e.g. circa 1821, but was at 270 and 271 Strand by 1839. In a 1838 directory, four businesses were listed at 40 Strand, but not a brush in sight. Earlier Cowdry was also at 407 Strand, which would have been at the west end of the Strand, getting on towards Charing Cross.
