    1. [LON] George Rawlins , Watchmaker of Whitechapel
    2. Hello, I am new to the list. I have been investigating various Rawlins Watchmakers in search of the family of my 3 great grandfather, Samuel Rawlins, who was identified as a watch finisher on the baptismal records for his children in 1845 at St. Barnabas Finsbury in Middlesex. I have come across a George Rawlins of Whitechapel who took on several apprentices in the 1770s and early 1780s. I have a copy of Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World by Brian Loomes who also notes a George Spencer Rawlins, in London in 1802. I would love to know where I might look for parish records. I would appreciate any ideas of how to do more research on this family. Thanks, Bev W

    3. My grandmother, Anna Sarah Maria BOND was born in Acton in 1870. Her mother died in 1885, when she was 15. She was, in her day, a good cook, and I have wondered how and where she learned these skills. She said that she worked for the Rothschild family, but I have no more detail. She was a housekeeper after her first husband died in 1901, and she remarried in 1905. Perhaps it was during this period that she may have worked for the Rothschilds. Does anyone know whether members of the Rothschild family lived in the Acton/Gunnersbury/Chiswick area at that time? Any information would be much appreciated. David Roberts

If you know whereabouts in Australia your ancestors settled, you may find a more specific list from the options. Start with http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ and type Australia in the lower of the 2 boxes. 3. I am trying to find more information about my 5 x Great Grandfather, Thomas Lindsell (or variants) who I believe established a Coach, Cart and Wheelwright business in 1740 located in East Street, Prittlewell, Essex where the present Railway Hotel now stands. The firms advert of the 18th century also reads 'agent for the leading manufactures of agricultural implements and basket carriages'. The business was subsequently run by my 4 x GG, 3 x GG and 3 x G Uncle until the premises and private house were destroyed by fire in November 1872. In the extract from the Parish Register Transcript of St Mary's, Prittlewell there is a baptism for John Lyndsey in 1769 and a Mary Linsey in 1772 both have parents listed as Thomas and Ann. Could these be the parents of my 4 x GG, Thomas born C1758? No other details about Thomas or Ann Lindsell have come to light. Can anyone please help with information on Thomas and Ann Lindsell (or variants) or the business itself? David Lindsell

Joseph was a Horse/Stable Keeper in Grosvenor Street in 1830's and had two other sons Charles Joseph born 1826 - died 1880 in Brighton George Frederick born 1828 - died 1888 also in Brighton (Master Tailor) (my grt-grandfather). None of the above appear in any Census, although I'm quite sure that George Frederick is in the 1841 Census as George Jacob, aged 13, in Tavistock Place, St Pancras, Marylebone as an apprentice resident with others who are Tailors. He's found in Rotherhithe in 1871 and 1881, and Greenwich in 1891, and in Camberwell in 1901, and doesn't appear to have ever been to Manchester. I know Manchester was the hotbed of the cotton industry in England, so when he says he's a Manchester Warehouseman, would that mean he works for a warehouse that stores cotton coming in off ships but which is eventually bound for Manchester? Wouldn't Manchester's cotton industry have used a closer port than London?Perhaps it was a warehouse owned by a company called Manchester? Or was the word Manchester just synonymous at the time with cotton? Thanks for any thoughts, Tracy in Ontario, Canada.
