    3. Hi Jon Parts of the 1861 census for London are missing so it's possible yours are in a missing piece. I seem to recall the Pancras area is one of those. I had a quick look but couldn't find them. Will have another go after I water the garden and watch the tennis! 3. Dear listers, I am seeking my name's sake in the 1861 Census. In the 1841 Census, Jonathan NIXEY and his wife Sophia (late LLEWELLYN formerly BRADDY) are at Lambeth, Surrey. In the 1851 Census, Jonathan and Sophia are again at Lambeth. I can't find them in the 1861 Census, so if anyone can help in this regard, I'd be deeply grateful. I've tried Ancestry, familysearch.org and FMP, but to no avail. Maybe they were missed or the page was damaged or missing? Jonathan's death is registered in the Pancras registration district in 1867, he was 57 years old. In the 1871 Census, widowed Sophia is at St Pancras. Shortly after that Census, Sophia dies in the Pancras RD, aged 69. Sophia BRADDY was born on March 23,1803, and baptised at Old Church St Pancras on May 29,1803, she was the daughter of Alexander and Mary. Many thanks in advance for any help, best wishes, Jon

For example, ancestry has most, but not all, of those parish registers for Greater London kept at the LMA. Notable exceptions are the City of Westminster (inc.much of Marylebone and Paddington) at Westminster City Archives, and St.Mary Abbots, Kensington (still with the church). Findmypast has some non-conformist records online. The LMA has a wonderful collection (you an search/browse the catalogue through their own site or the National Archives site). The Guildhall Library has the most complete runs of London directories (these may have been now transferred to the LMA). The SoG Library has a vast collection of material, including for London/Middlesex. Local borough archives are a much under-used resource, and some have been heavily affected by recent cuts. (e.g. Hammersmith & Fulham now only open twice a month by appointment only). Clapton will be in Hackney Archives, Stepney and Mile End in Tower Hamlets. They are probably the best source for local newspapers, outside the British Library at Colindale. There are also more obscure archives, such as those associated with professions, e.g. architects, surgeons. The secret is in the next few weeks to really organise your research so that before you land you now exactly where you need to go and the opening hours and general proximity of one repository to another. Almost every one has a web-site and most a searchable catalogue. Lastly, do not bring original documents with you - you'd hate to lose them - make photocopies. Good hunting! John Henley

    3. Hello, I shall be visiting London in October, yet again, in my endless search for half hidden ancestors, and since I shall have little time to do all I think I need to do I do not want to waste a minute of my time. I have in the past visited local family history centres, but wonder if the LMA can provide most of what these specialist centres provide. e.g records of local nespapers, local business directories, etc., or is still best to go to the borough where the person lived/died in the late 19th century?. The areas I am particularly interested in are Islington, Mile End Road, Clapton, Stepney and the borough of my birth, Kensington, spelt with an ess. Thanks, Nick. Richmond, B.C.

    1. [LON] Marriage help surname GAGER
    2. Karen Hodges
    3. This request is a bit off topic but I am hoping someone might be able to help me anyway. I have found the baptism of one of my London ancestors[married, had children and was convicted here]. She was baptised in Norfolk 1772 and her parents were Richard and Susanna GAGER. I would like to find out her Mother's maiden name but can't locate a marriage. I have found that her father Richard married in 1764 in Norfolk, his first wife was buried & son baptised in August 1765 in Norfolk. With Susanna he had a daughter baptised [Gage] in November 1768 and another two in 1772 and 1774[ under Gager] all in Norfolk. The father died in 1779 and the Mother in 1786, also in Norfolk. I have been looking for Richard & Susanna Gager's marriage between Aug 1765-Nov 1768 in Norfolk images[on family search] but with no luck yet. I have read that the Society of Genealogists hold various indexes for Norfolk marriages and am hoping if someone is visiting this location that they might be able to check this index[es] GAGER is an uncommon name. I don't think Richard was from Norfolk and his children don't appear to have stayed in Norfolk. Karen Australia
