    1. [LON] BECHER BMD 1722 to 1739 Kensington
    2. eileen
    3. I am presently waiting for a reply from St. Mary Abbot re Parish BMD record entries between 1722 and 1739, thanks to a reply which was given some time ago on this list. Meanwhile if anybody spots an old BECHER entry, 1722 to 1739, anywhere I am still looking for my missing link which attaches me to the main Becher family tree. My 5x Gt Grandfather Lionel George Becher married(?) Ann Lake/Leake who was living with her mother Sarah Lowden/Lake/Leake in Gravel Pits Kensington in 1722 while Lionel was stationed in Kensington as an ensign in the Guards. Someone would have had to pay for his commission. That year there was an Edward Becher as Mayor of London??. Anne was brought up a Catholic though Lionel was not, hence my search in progress at St. Mary Abbot. I have been through many other LDS films including clandestine at Fleet. I have been searching records for over 20 years and have many documents, letters, Wills etc from the archives Apart from their marriage there are two children, Ann Lucy and Joyner, (my 4xGt Grandfather), who must have been/probably baptised somewhere. Grateful thanks for anything. Eileen http://www.epfranchi.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/page1.htm

    1. [LON] William BENSON and Elizabeth BENSON
    2. Christine Benson
    3. Hi All, William BENSON, my ggg-uncle was born c1806 in Carlisle, Cumberland, but in 1851 he was living in Marylebone with a wife Elizabeth who was born in Wasing, Berkshire, c 1801. He lived in the London area until at least 1891 when he was living in Hammersmith. Elizabeth died between 1861 and 1871. I have all the censuses in between but not the 1841. I have not got the marriage. There are no signs of children. In 1891, however he is a boarder at age 85 and also a boarder is Elizabeth E. BENSON aged 30 (1861) born London. He is a widower and she is single. So is this a pure coincidence or are they related? Looking for Elizabeth E. in other censuses I find her as a boarder in Lambeth in 1881 aged 20, but in 1871 the only Elizabeth E. is only 5 (1866) born Lambeth, Surrey and living in Wandsworth with an uncle and aunt William and Caroline DUCE. There is also an Elizabeth aged 9 living with mother Margaret, a widow, in St. George in the East. In spite of the age gap I prefer the first and wonder if she could have added a few years to her age when living independently. However it could be that neither are correct! There is a birth of an Elizabeth Eliza BENSON born Oct-Dec 1865 Lambeth, London which would match the first, but would not prove she is the same person as in 1871 and 1881. I know I could order the birth certificate but would like to see if anyone has any ideas first. What are people's thoughts on the above and the connection, or not, between William and Elizabeth E.? Does London have any sites which might be useful to me in looking up BMD records like some other counties have? Why Lambeth, Surrey (above)? I know boundaries have changed (but I don't know the details) But I am never sure what is London, what is Middlesex, (does it exist anymore) and whether to put old addresses or modern into Ancestry (say) as sometimes it insists a place is in London when I enter it but the search results put it elsewhere!!! Any information / ideas gratefully received, Christine

She married William HUNT. I found John H. M. Would like to fill out the family tree a little more. Regards. Barbara. England.

    1. [LON] Missing ship
    2. JACKIE JORDAN
    3. Hello all, Getting back to the family history after a break, and looking for help with missing ships. I have a 14 year old boy, an apprentice, lost at sea in 1879, 'supposed drowned'. Ship was City of Kandy, which was missing since January 27 1879, and the death registered in April 1879. I have not been able to find anything about this ship at all. I have looked on the ships list, and of course Google, and anywhere else that I can think of . I would be interested to know where the ship was going to, or coming from, and where it disappeared. A picture would be a bonus, but where do I look for the information. I am sure that someone out there with much more knowledge than me, (not difficult) will be able to put me on the right track. Thanks Jackie

    3. I am new to this list. Does anyone have an interest in the district of Peckham? I have just discovered that my mother ( who was adopted before the Adoption Act of 1927) was shown on the 1911 Census as having been born on London, and someone has added the word Peckham beside the entry. Does anyone have any knowledge of orphanages or children's homes that would have been active in this area round about 1901, when I believe her to have been born. OR, can anyone tell me where to go to find Street Directories etc that may help. Many thanks. Patreece Palmer in Bay of Plenty New Zealand.

    1. [LON] ESFHS RICHMOND JULY MEETING
    2. Maureen Burton
    3. I thought you all might be ineterested in the following meeting at Richmond. Looks an interesting talk and could unlock the Occupational mysteries that abound in Family History. Our next meeting is on Saturday, July 9th at our usual time and venue Vestry Hall, 21, Paradise Road, Richmond at 2:30 (doors open at 2:00) This month our guest speaker will be Dr Chris Watts. The subject of Chris's talk is "English Occupational Records" One of the top research objectives of Family Historians, having compiled a basic family tree, is to discover their ancestors' occupations. Although there is no single resource that will satisfy this need, there are a vast number of records that can help. In his talk. Chris will be looking at some of the records available to us and what they might reveal. This will include those employed or licensed by central and local government, such as the armed forces, police, railwaymen, merchant seamen, inn-keepers and more besides. He will also be making some reference to the tax on apprenticeships. We hope that you will be able to join us on Saturday the 9th of July for what we know will be a great talk, from yet another top quality speaker. Look forward to seeing you (and any friends or relatives you care to bring along). Maureen Burton Member ESFHS
