    3. Yes it does seem to be Babsfeild and presumably meaning of a local place- rather than Moses came from sfar away in rural Surrey This map of 1767 on David Hale site Shows fields at back of Shadwell Bluegate and Sun Tavern http://mapco.net/anon/anon04.htm and just east of that map I can see Glass House fields on 1862 map So fields in Shadwell and perhaps Babs was a very temporary name for one Ron Lankshear -Sydney NSW (from London-Shepherds Bush/Chiswick) try my links http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~lankshear/ On 2011-07-12 7:23 AM, Leonie Oliver wrote: > I only know that Babsfield was the abode when James Oliver, son of Moses Oliver, mariner, and Joan his wife, was baptised at St paul Shadwell on 26 April 1681 and that it was also the place given when Joan Oliver, wife of Mosses Oliver, was buried at the same parish a month later. > But just where Babsfield was, is a mystery. > Thanks again for the replies.

    3. Hi Peter and John Thanks for the reply. I only know that Babsfield was the abode when James Oliver, son of Moses Oliver, mariner, and Joan his wife, was baptised at St paul Shadwell on 26 April 1681 and that it was also the place given when Joan Oliver, wife of Mosses Oliver, was buried at the same parish a month later. But just where Babsfield was, is a mystery. Thanks again for the replies. 3. Hi Michael The search facilities on Ancestry are extremely powerful (though their indexing/transcription sometimes leaves a great deal to be desired!). Firstly, you should navigate to the data set in question, using the "card catalogue". In the specific case you mention, this is two separate sets of registers (baptisms and marriages). Then enter "St Andrew Holborn" in the parish box. This particular field is quite picky about what you put in. It won't work, for instance with "St Andrew's Holborn", though if you are in doubt, try using the keyword box instead (*not* as well as). If you would prefer to work your way through the register images one by one, rather than relying on the index, then choose the "browse this collection" option on the right hand side. For St Andrew Holborn, choose City of London in the first drop down box. Does this help? Best wishes Caroline > > Please can someone advise how the Parish register search works on > Ancestry > I know that I can enter a name, however is it possible to just search > the registers > of a individual London Church for instance > > St Andrews Holborn 1830 baptisms/marriages > > Michael

    3. Often it depends on which county you are concentrating but noticing you are sending this to the London site I would recommend ancestry for the reason that they have so many London parish records available (stretches out to Surrey as well) and the actual records, which can tell you so much more - when they loaded these records I broke down so many brick walls - and they do have 1841 thru 1901 censuses - other records I have found invaluable are the wills and probate records. I recommend you look at the various sites for ancestry to get the best deal - dependent upon current exchange rates - .com, .co.uk, .au, .ca ________________________________ From: S Smith <ssmith87@bellsouth.net> To: london@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, July 8, 2011 4:41 AM Subject: [LON] please recommend the best England research page(s) for the money Could someone please recommend the best England research page(s) for the money to buy membership to? 3. Hi Sherrie, Have you got Frederick's birth certificate? The birth in Shoreditch on FreeBMD looks promising but there are other possibles. If you have got it then what is the exact place of birth? On the census returns there are no exact matches but maybe one parent died and the other remarried. I can send you the likely ones off list if you want. Let me know. There is a tree on Ancestry about a Frederick but, at a quick glance, I see no census details. Is it your tree? That shows him as Frederick John NEWMAN b 1887 married Louise Grace BOYER with a sibling Eric A. NEWMAN b 1890. Is this your family? Or it could be another Frederick. Let me know a bit more, even if on some things it is "I don't know", and I will see what I can find. Thomas's father was also Thomas ROFF a ship builder. I have no mothers name. Thomas jr arrived in New Zealand and was married there in 1869. Sorry to be so vague but this is all the information I have from the his death certificate. Kind Regards Lori

    1. Re: [LON] William BENSON and Elizabeth BENSON
    2. Ron Lankshear
    3. A likely death for William William Benson Oct-Nov-Dec 1893 age 87 abt 1806 Wandsworth London 1d 563 Perhaps DC informant might clarify things. Yes the boarder in 1881 does look like the Elizabeth with William in 1891 1891 Milliner born London City age 30 1881 lace worker born London age 20 In both initial E seems clear. I could not find any likely birth or a 1901 census or any marriage between 1891 and 1901 The 1871 age 9 born Middlesex with mother Margaret seems closer to the above woman. London city is not really Middlesex but then political boundaries are vague ideas. And I note mother is born Ireland - but I suppose could have been married to a relation of William. Probably the birth in 1865 in Lambeth is the girl in Wandsworth in 1871 BUT seems hardly likely to be the 1891/1881 woman. London City is certainly not Lambeth and age is too young. Lambeth was Surrey and then became politically part of London. Similarly London north of Thames was Middlesex and then London. When using census in Ancestry and the click down list then if London is there use that otherwise pick Middlesex or Surrey or the area names Also possible Elizabeth was married into the Benson family.
