Hi Nick This is the City of London Lunatic Asylum in Dartford (though the name has been prettified over time to City of London Hospital for Mental Disease (1899) City of London Asylum For Mental Disease (1900 - 1905), City of London Asylum and Hospital for Mental Disease (1906 - 1920) and City of London Mental Hospital from 1921 onwards). It is now known as Stone House Hospital. The hospital's records are at the London Metropolitan Archives. Direct access may be slightly tricky, as the documents may, theoretically, contain information about living individuals. You should contact the LMA (ask.lma@cityoflondon.gov.uk) and enquire. The most likely answer is that they will have to do the research on your behalf and extract the information on your great uncle (provided that you can prove he is dead). Hope this helps Caroline > > I had a great uncle whom his brother referred to as 'afflicted', but > the > censuus takers of those unenlightened days as 'idiot'. lunatic' and > finally > 'imbecile'. Nick, This institution is now Stone House Hospital, but in 1901 it was the City of London Asylum for Mental Disease. The historical records are at London Metropolitan Archives. There is a 100-year closure on patient records, determined by the date of the last entry in the relevant volume. Nevertheless, the LMA archivists will normally extract and send you the data that relates to your ancestor, in line with their normal research fee. The 1861 census shows my G-grandfather Marshall BENNETT aged 12, born Belize, as a visitor at Gayton House, #7 Kensington Park Terrace, London. (RG9/14. RG Kensington SD Kensington Town, ED8 folio 68 p. 3 sch 7.) The head of household was Maria A. BLANCHARD, b. Down, Mdx, occupation Landed Property; she had sons Leonard BLANCHARD aged 14 and Ernest W. BLANCHARD, aged 12. Apparently Marshall was visiting school chums during the Easter holidays. Does anyone know what school these boys attended? Would there be school records anywhere? Happy hunting, Sonia in the U.S.

Dear Listers, I would very much like to trace any descendants of Reginald Henderson and Maude Sullivan who married in London in 1928. I imagine many of his children are still alive, but I hope I'm not infringing rules by mentioning them in the hope that someone might be able to suggest likely marriages etc. which could help me locate them. They are: Ellen M born 1929, Irene F. b. 1932, George W. b. 1934, Donald J, b.1936, Brian P b.1941, William J. b.1943,and Alan J.b.1947 all in Shoreditch or Hackney. Also I wonder if Reginald Paul Henderson, born 1898 would be too old to serve in WW11. I assume he would be. Hope someone can help, Best wishes, Mary
Would anyone on the List have some information on the families of Daniel and Thomas Skinner who were merchants in Mark Lane, c. 1670? I am particularly interested as to who their parents might be. Thank you, David Cornelius
Hi folks, Is anyone out there researching the TABRAHAM family from Hackney? I'm interested in the family of Adeline Frances TABRAHAM b1869, daughter of John W and Mary Ann. I have all relevant census entries, I'm actually looking for someone who is researching or has researched this family, particularly Adeline Frances. Kindest regards, Jon

Hi All, I am currently looking for a William WELLS and family. All of the following information has been taken from his convict records. He was transported to Tasmania in 1850 on the Blenheim. The information I have on him at the moment is that he was born circa 1830 in Ealing (records state he was 21 upon arrival). His father's name was William and he had two brothers, Henry and Richard. He also had two sisters, Eliza and Martha. William was a Bricklayer. There is a note on his record that states that Richard was a Soldier in Mauritius. Not sure about this piece. Any information on William and his Ealing family would be appreciated. kind rgds Phil... 2 x g Grandson
It may be a long shot but I have had at least 6 people contact me having found my message in the archives, usually so long after the original message that you have forgotten the original context of the question. What I would however stress is that it is important to use meaningful headings that people can find later, i.e. full Names and Dates and Places etc. Good luck with your searches. Paul in Sydney. -----Original Message----- From: london-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:london-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Anne Peat Sent: Thursday, 4 August 2011 8:49 PM To: Alan Taylor Cc: LONDON@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [LON] Taylor Family Hello Alan, It is a very long shot to find anyone researching the same person as you on the list. John, Just to add to what has already been found ... There are possible Naturalisation papers for him at Kew. http://tinyurl.com/3qwr2o3 If it's the right man, these may tell you where he was born, his parents' names, and other details (including recent addresses in the UK, if you don't already have that information). Copies can be ordered online from Kew -- follow the Ordering and Viewing Options on the above link. There's also a corresponding announcement of his naturalisation in the London Gazette. http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/26828/pages/1262 HTH Judy London, UK -----Original Message----- From: london-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:london-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of john.hume Hi All, new to this list trying to discover ANYTHING about my great grandparents and family Christopher and Veronica (?)
