    3. Hi Simon I helped only yesterday with a similar case as the woman could not be found based on father on marriage cert. Finally everything pointed to one girl with a different name father. He died when she was 4 so I could only assume she had it wrong. Sadly the MC did not show his occupation. Your marriage cert does show John as a Rope Maker. Was William the same? (Yes it seems) A witness to marriage was Mary Ann Bygraves. I'd assume a sister although perhaps a cousin. A month later she marries Colin Buchan and Sophia Willcox is a witness. Mary Ann father is William and a Rope maker. I note that at the weddings most people put their mark so presumably they did not read... So a quick conclusion would be the vicar got confused and put the groom's name John as also the father and no one noticed... I tried to look at records but could not Soph* or Mary Ann in 1861 or 1871 census. or Sarah married to William or John for that matter.... 1881 Sophia Willcox says born 1852/53 Southwark. I see the birth you mention 1852 in Greenwich as Sophia Bygrave. Also Mary Ann in Greenwich 1854 unless she is a cousin and the one born in Stepney. But where are the family in census??? I'd like to see that Mary Ann is a sister? Please advise if found in census? 3. Simon, I have a similar thing on my grandparents' wedding certificate. The father of the groom, Thomas Sheridan, is also Thomas Sheridan. In fact he was Henry Richard Sheridan ( or Richard, Or Henry - but that's another story!) I think you have to remember that children often didn't know their parents' forenames - they didn't have the bits of paper we do, people didn't go round calling people by their forenames as we do, and many of them couldn't read. If the father had died some time before, or run off and left the family ( as my great grandfather did) it is quite possible the children didn't know what his forename was - so either invented one, or said the first name that came into their head. Can you establish by census, baptism records and parents' marriage what his forename was? 3. Having worked with large numbers of certs, my first question would be - who gave the information for the marriage certificate? Or... who gave the information at the time of the birth? Do you have verification that "William" is correct? It always amazes me how often the informant was incorrect. I even had a birth certificate once where a baby's mother was listed as "Unknown"! Hello?? Nancy from Michigan in the U S of A P S - and have you documented that you have the *right* Sophie's certificate? "Our dreams keep our passion for living alive. Never stop dreaming!" If there are any names you are interested in please let me know and I can send photo's. This part of the cemetery is very derelict as the Council is hell bent on destroying the graves including C. W. G. C. plots as they are overgrown too on this site. Therefore some of the Photos may be hard to read but I took loads and looking at every one of a grave I can get all the information to post here. Hello All,    I am new to the list and I'd like to make a couple of points.   Over the next few weeks I'd like to post a few records.......these will be post 1907 marriages in London that appear in Irish baptismal registers. (this appears because of applications for letters of freedom to marry, I have scores of them)   I also have ancestry from Wales and Somerset and  a few of them moved to London.   Also I am most interested in obtaining a record from the Merchany Navy records from Kew post 1941 and if anyone can help me out I will offer to help with anyone who has an Irish interest.   I'll post a good few records over the next few days .......I'll put the surnames from Ireland who married in London in the subject line.   Best regards.   Slán, Kevin.

    3. Hi Joan Sadly the marriage does not show George's occupation just deceased. This is what I first found after the marriage....... 1891 census has George Reeves 59 Boiler Maker Rebecca Reeves 57 Francis Reeves 12 Office Boy Post born Poplar Richard Wm Reeves 10 George Reeves 6 RG12; Piece: 326; Folio 33; Page 5 and they are also in 1881 RG11; Piece: 501; Folio: 152; Page: 36 So if Frank was born Francis then 1878/1879 Francis seems to be the one that fits with Frank although older than he shows in census etc. But I think Francis is not your Frank see what I find later And I presume this is Frank and Rose 1901 James Russel 49 Eliz B Russel 38 John P Russel 19 Ellen Russel 14 James Russel 9 Frank Reeves 19 St George in The East Rose Reeves 19 St George in The East, Charles Reeves 4 Months RG13; Piece: 309; Folio: 99; Page: 42 1911 I have only looked at Index but I think these are their children St George in the East REEVES FRANK 1882 29 REEVES ROSE ALICE F 1882 29 REEVES FRANK 1907 4 REEVES GEORGE THOMAS 1904 7 REEVES ROSE ALICE 1909 2 I assume some obstacle to their marriage until 1914. I could not find a previous for him. perhaps her father objected and they only married when he died......... or could they have married before and something went wrong with registration so never got into GRO..... There is this baptism and George is a Engineer which could equate with boilermaker but mother is not Rebecca and it makes Frank older than the 1891 Francis....... Frank Reeves 2 Jul 1876 George Reeves, Susan Alice Reeves Stepney St Dunstan and All Saints Tower Hamlets Born 15 June 1876 But 1881 has George Reeves abt 1850 Widower N K, Surrey, England Head Engineer Mining Charles Reeves abt 1875 Stepney, Middlesex, England Son Frank Reeves abt 1877 Stepney, Middlesex, England Son RG11; Piece: 465; Folio: 36; Page: 10 This does seem to be the 1876 baptism Frank and using Frank at marriage seems to fit well and also a brother Charles and also name for Frank and Rose's son But then this Frank is some 5 years older than he was saying at marriage etc....... 3. Hi Ron, I'd be pretty comfortable with reading all three as NK (just NK for William and Charles, and Do. NK for Emma) - aside from being by far the most likely short abbreviation to be used here, the N is the same as in Novrad and other Ns on the page, and in interpreting a K, it can help to look at an H - a K is often a slightly loopier version of the writer's H. Looks like that to me here, and it's only because he hasn't done a great job of connecting the "|" with the "<" of the K that it looks like LL or SL. 3. Hi Jan If, as I assume, you mean that you want to take your research further back, your first port of call should be Frederick and Alice's marriage. This was at St Mark, Myddleton Square on 5 April 1874. Ancestry have mangled their transcription of the parish register so the entry appears to relate to a Frederick Charles "Williams" and an "Alee" STEVENS. If you don't have access via the appropriate subscription, let me know and I will send you the image. Frederick names his father as Thomas WARREN, a railway servant. But I cannot see any likely family group in 1861, nor can I pick out Frederick in 1871 with any confidence. The birth of a Frederick Charles WARREN was registered in Q3 1851 in Bedford and this looks like a strong possibility and worth the 9.25GBP. This registration ties in quite neatly with the baptism of a Frederick Charles WARREN at St Mary's Bedford on 4 February 1855 (courtesy of FamilySearch), which gives a date of birth of 15 June 1851. However, the LDS transcription provides only the name of Sarah WARREN as mother (i.e. no father shown). This could be an error, or the father's name might have been illegible, but it could also point to an illegitimate birth (and a pretend "Thomas" at the marriage). Bedfordshire Archives may well be prepared to check for you free of charge, as you have the exact date and place. Alice was born on 18 January 1854 and baptised on 26 February of that year at St George the Martyr, Queen Square, daughter of Edward (which matches the information in the marriage register) and Louisa. Ancestry have, once again, let you down with their transcription of this event - it can be found under Alice "Stepens", though her siblings (of whom there are a fair few) are correctly transcribed for their baptisms. Hope this helps Caroline > > Trying to find out more about my great grandparents. >

    1. [LON] Sarah Ann WILD and family
    2. Jennifer and Grant Hudson
    3. Hello from NZ Sarah Ann CURLINE married George WILD in 1853. I think they must have come to NZ in 1866 approx. as I have found death and burial information for a George (1910) and Sarah WILD (1917) in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin. It says Sarah had been in NZ for 40 years and her age matches with a DOB in 1829/8. Sarah Ann 's 1/2 sister Mary Ann RILEY arrived in NZ in 1866 with someone who called herself Ann CURLINE and I had always thought Sarah Ann was the 1/2 sister. There are no children mentioned in the newspaper death notices but in those days this was normal. I have ordered the death cert for Sarah WILD/E d 1917 Dunedin, NZ. Hopefully this will have the reuired information. I have looked on Ancestry as Sarah and George WILD would possibly have been in the UK for the 1861 Census. I would really appreciate an opinion from others about this family: Sarah WILD DOB abt 1828 London England George WILD DOB abt 1826 Middlesex England Chn Emma 10y Sarah 7y George 5y William 4y St George Southwark Kent Rd It appears to match but if it does what happened to these children as I can't find them in NZ. All opinions appreciated. Thanks Jennifer Hudson. Dunedin NZ
