Hi Jenny, No, I am sorry but my family were in Beccles, Suffolk by 1844, so I don't think the first William is any relation to me. I do have a William Barnard who was born in Beccles in 1833. In the 1861 census he was in Heigham, Northwich and still unmarried. He said he was 24 when in fact he was at least 27/28, but many people gave incorrect ages of course. He would have been been 35 in 1868 and I was unable to find any trace of him after 1861. Do you know where William married in 1868 was born or where he was married? Thanks for your response. Thomas Barnard married Elizabeth ? date unknown but probably in London. They had at least two sons, William bapt. 31 May, 1789, and Thomas bapt. 24 Oct, 1790. Both were baptised in St.John the Baptist, Walbrook (sic), London. Any one interested in this family? If so I would love to hear from you. Alan
Hi, I have found the family of Samuel George FARROW (Q4 1857) & Susan ABRA (Q3 1865), who wed in Shoreditch Q3 1888, with their children Maud Elizabeth Q3 1889, George Grayham Q1 1892, Albert Edward Q2 1894, William Frederick Q1 1899, & May Doris Q2 1906, in the 1901 & 1911 census returns. However I just cannot find them in the earlier census returns 1861-1891 under any obvious surname variation. Can anyone shed any light ? TIA John E Farrow

Hi all Charles Westley HARVEY is one of life's great mysteries. My only certain sighting of him is on the 9th Jun 1878 when he marries Mary Ann HEDGCOCK in Dover. He's a private of the 10th Regiment currently stationed at the Western Heights in Dover, aged 28. Father is Robert HARVEY a Carpenter. I cannot find him on any census except for the 1861 in Suffolk which could possibly be him. He's described as born 1853, a nephew to Henry HARVEY (b abt 1793 Thorp Essex), and born Middlesex London. The males of this HARVEY line are all carpenters or joiners, so it's a strong likelyhood that this is my Charles. I think I have tracked his father on the 41c, 51c, and 71c, but at no time is Charles with him. I cannot track his birth/baptism details, nor what happened to him after his marriage. All I know is that he possibly died by 1884 when Mary remarried to a William GAMMON. Although she described herself as a spinster this is her as the 1891c has as her son by Charles, James W HARVEY. What I'm hoping for is because of his birth in London Middlesex that another researcher could be lurking. I have tried every conceivable search mechanism I know of and getting no-where. I will be posting to the Essex and Suffolk lists in the hope of catching some info there. Cheers Andy

after years on research on this family I still cannot find a marriage between William John ARABIN and Catherine LE MERCHANT. He divorced his first wife in 1786 (Henrietta Molyneux) and had a daughter to Catherine in 1791 and the mother's name appears on the baptism register. Any help welcome. Shirley

Hi Diana A small comment, you say "He also described himself as "single" even though he had a "wife"" The 1911 schedule was filled in by the manageress and it is very likely she filled in the details without asking the full details of her clients, she may well have assumed he was single OR was simply being diplomatic :-) Curious that the only "visitors" in the "Hotel" are two males and two females eh The address looks to be a small boarding house rather than a Hotel proper, it is the same unnamed in 1901 Have you investigated this death England & Wales, Death Index: 1916-2005 about Edwin F Carter Name: Edwin F Carter Birth Date: abt 1881 Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1961 Age at Death: 80 Registration district: Wycombe Inferred County: Buckinghamshire Volume: 6a Page: 581 I don't see another Edwin F CARTER birth in 1879 to 1881 Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hello list > > I am looking for a needle in a haystack but as this is a most knowledgeable list I will go ahead > and ask what seems the impossible. > > An ancestor was living in an hotel (un-named) at 22 Eastbourne Terrace, Paddington in the 1911 > census. Hello list I am looking for a needle in a haystack but as this is a most knowledgeable list I will go ahead and ask what seems the impossible. An ancestor was living in an hotel (un-named) at 22 Eastbourne Terrace, Paddington in the 1911 census. He described himself as a Theatrical Box Office Manager. He also described himself as "single" even though he had a "wife" and four or five children living in another part of London. Edwin Forfar CARTER, born in Luton 1880, family originally from Scotland was a mystery. A different occupation in each census and on his children's birth certificates, from Journalist to Circus Worker to Theatre Manager and no sign of him after 1911. He could of course have been killed or served in the First World War - his son, born 1905, never spoke of him in later life except to say he was dead. I have found a couple of E CARTER'S who served and survived the First World War plus a couple of the same name who were killed but no way of finding out exactly who they were or where the survivors went after that. How can I find out if there was an hotel at 22 Eastbourne Terrace in 1911? It had 12 rooms but there were only 4 guests there at the time of the census. I am assuming that if he was a Theatrical Box Office Manager he would have been working at a theatre nearby. The proprietor was Irish, Edward CROFTON, and employed a Hotel Manageress. He too was married but there was no sign of a wife living there. I have applied to the British National Library regarding the Electoral Registers of that time but Edwin CARTER did appear to move around London a lot. With thanks in advance for any advice or help you can give me. Kind regards Diana Ingram Wiltshire.
Many thanks to all who replied to my request. Clement Hoy, c1625-1703, of London, Cheame, etc. Michael Hoy, c1758-1830, of London, St Petersberg, Southampton etc. Both were wealthy, public figures who generated lots of records, yet I know nothing of their parentage. Like most gentry they could have been born at any manor-house within the family estates anywhere in SE England. Does anyone have them in their line?
Being new to the list I would like to post my names to see if anyone is following the same lines as myself: FIELD - Shoreditch GIBBS - Islington HEBDON - Shoreditch BOGGIA - Islington & Mortlake DONNELLY - Mortlake HOWARD - Mortlake TOBIN - Wandsworth COX - Mortlake Lesley Dawson
Many thanks to Caroline and Andy. I'll print of the application form and keep my fingers crossed that it's a full will with masses of info on it!!! 'Dream on' comes into my head! Kind regards. Barbara. >

Hi Barbara Yes, you can get a copy of the will, either in person from a probate registry office, or by post. The cost is £6.00. Details of the procedure and a form for postal applications can be found at http://www.justice.gov.uk/guidance/courts-and-tribunals/courts/probate/copie s-of-grants-wills.htm. Whether or not the will will tell you more than you already know is a leap in the dark.
