    3. I really need some fresh eyes to take a look at this census for 1861 for me. 1861 Census...St. Bride, Mdx. Charlotte Hughes abt 1801 age 60 nurse Reading, Berkshire, Head James Hughes abt 1842,age 19 porter Chiselhurst, Kent, son Ellen Hennern abt 1858 age 3 St. Andrews, Mdx., Granddaughter This brick wall has been my nemisis for about 10 years now and I really need help with it. James is my gt. grandfather and I am looking for a marriage for Charlotte (his mother). On his birth record in the parish records it shows her as being a single woman but on James's marriage certificate he states his father is Charles Hughes. The reason I want fresh eyes is to look at this census and make out the last name of Ellen, the grand daughter. She is not James's daughter . The last name of Hennern is just a guess and I wanted to find her birth to locate further siblings of James and thus to his father. I would appreciate any kind of help that anyone can give me.

Before 1871 he is a mystery, but I know his mother who was English (Susan WOOLLS) and most of his siblings were back in Englandby 1851 after his father died in 1843. After 1871, I have a reference to his being in Toronto, Ontario, Canadaby 1878. Could anyone give me some guidance as to where I could check immigration records from Londonto Canadabetween 1871 and 1878. Many thanks, Sue (NSW, Australia)

    3. Hi Listers, My thanks to Bev W and Antony Lambert for their responses. I will check out the Wolverhampton records when I have a bit more time. I have checked the death of Susan MASTERS and see there was such a child born 1880, living in Bermondsey in 1881, and no relation to me. Greenwich is the right area for my Susan but I am mystified as to why she should be registered at death as MASTERS since she was legitimately a DANIEL, my grandmother married my grandfather as a DANIEL, and her mother married James PRINGLE as a DANIEL! I'll do a bit more digging and see if I can rule this Susan MASTERS in or out. My thanks to you both, Lesley

    1. Re: [LON] Brick wall: Caroline Selina Brown Suffling
    2. Caroline Bradford
    3. Hi Sonia SUFFLING is very much a Norfolk name. In the 1861 census its bearers live only in Norfolk or London, and the latter almost certainly came from Norfolk originally. So I think it is reasonable to assume that Ann was born SUFFLING. Thomas's place of birth in 1881 is Leeds, Yorks, not Lewes. There are no SUFFLINGs in Yorkshire. What is the wording on Caroline's birth certificate? Does it pretend that Ann and Thomas are married (i.e. is Ann SUFFLING, formerly BROWN?)? Or is it a fairly common type of wording for an illegitimate birth, with the forenames being Caroline Selina Brown and no father's name given? There is a very likely candidate for Ann SUFFLING in Hanworth in the 1861 and 1871 censuses, daughter of Joseph and Sarah (the former being dead by 1871). In 1871 there is a slightly suspicious looking child, Hector E SUFFLING, enumerated as the grandson of Sarah. His birth is registered in Erpingham RD in Q3 1866. In 1881, when Ann's sister (also Sarah) is head of the household, he is called her nephew. In 1891, he is still living with Sarah jnr but is now her brother. He is a schoolmaster in Hackney in 1901 and in Whitechapel in 1911. Why my interest in Hector, you may wonder? Because thanks to the LDS, the majority of Norfolk baptism registers are available for online browsing at FamilySearch, and Hector's baptism on 10 April 1869 at Hanworth parish church shows his mother as Anne SUFFLING (no father). The two BROWNs living in the same house as Ann in 1881 may be a red herring, as it is such a common name. I will have a closer look and see if I can come up with anything. Best wishes for now, Caroline > > I can't find my grandmother, born Caroline Selina "Lena or Helena" > Brown > Suffling, or her mother in the 1891 census. Gran was born in May 1877 > at > Elmore St. Islington and was living with her parents at the same > address in > 1881. Her parents didn't marry. 3. Hello. I continually stub my toes on this brickwall. Patience LOVE, born 1826 in Coggeshall Essex. Parents Elizabeth c1794 and William LOVE 1787 in Coggeshall, Essex. She married George SMITH, a tailor, in 1846 and daughter Emily was born 1847. That's as far as I can get with Patience, I cannot find her death yet I believe she died young as I think I've found her husband, George SMITH, tailor, in London married to someone else. I've gone back a long way on the LOVE side, but would like to find out a bit more about Patience, particularly her death date. Regards. Barbara. Suffolk.

    3. Hi Muriel Not sure if you have had a reply to this yet. If so, apologies for the duplication (and a heartfelt plea to those who choose to respond off list to post a short message to the list to say they have done so!) Frank and Kate married at St John the Evangelist, East Dulwich on 12 August 1908. Frank's father (from the marriage register) was Alfred (deceased). His mother appears to have been Cathereen (sic) Elizabeth Love MILLEDGE, who married Alfred ARROWSMITH on 6 February 1875 at St Peter, Walworth. Does this help? 1. [LON] Brickwall - HENSHER
    2. B Robertson
    3. I've been searching for the birth and parentage of g-g-g-grandfather Samuel Hensher for over 20 years now. He lived in Croydon from 1800 till his death in 1833 aged 57. So he was born c 1776. I believe he married at St George, Hanover Sq in June 1795 and had his first 2 chidren baptised at St Botolph Aldgate in 1797 and 1798. He was a tobacco pipe maker and most of his children also followed this trade moving back to London, Bethnal Green and Stepney areas. He may have had a brother William born c 1766 who lived and worked as a pipemaker in Hornsey. Whether they were born in London or moved in I don't know. The name is found as Hensher, Hansher, Hencher and the more common Henshaw. There was a Hensher/ aw family of pipemakers in Northampton and Lutterworth in the 17th and 18th centuries, though have found no Samuel! I have searched Ancestry, Find my past and the Genealogist with no success! Can anyone suggest any strategies please? Many thanks Bev Robertson

    3. Alfred was the son of my g.grandmother, Emily Selina SEGGER/ASSITER/ SMITH/WILSON and her second husband, Charles John SMITH Merchant Seaman. Have only just found the boy, Alfred SMITH born 1907, living with his mother at 39 Milkwood Rd. SE Lambeth in the 1911 census. Emily is listed as married, but in December 1911 married Benjamin WILSON who was a boarder at this address. Not hopeful of tracking someone named SMITH but you never know...............and would love to find his family. Hanging out for the next Census! Judy.......Perth W.Australia

    1. [LON] BRICKWALL - Jacobs
    2. John Stevens
    3. Hi Folks Well, here are three of mine in the same family - any listers with time on their hands might care to choose one to look into please? I am trying to identify the fates of three of the eleven (at least) children of my gtX2 grandparents Joseph and Priscilla Jacobs who were born, married and died in Deptford, London/Kent. I have traced many of them but three have so far eluded me. I have a sub to Ancestry so I have searched all records there. 1) Caroline Margaret Jacobs was born to these parents in 1820 and was baptised at St.Paul Deptford that year. Subsequently I can find no further certain reference to her in BMD records or censuses* but in her father's will dated late 1849 he makes a bequest to "my eldest daughter Caroline Daly". I cannot find a marriage on Ancestry between a Caroline Jacobs and a male Daly nor a certain record of her demise in either name. (There is burial in this name in Greenwich in 1849 but the age is wrong and the death before the date of the aforementioned will). * There is a girl of the right age on the 1841 in Kent but is not living with parents so cannot be identified. 2) On the 1841 census for Deptford Joseph Jacobs is now widowed and has remarried to Elizabeth. Living with them is my gt.grandfather Charles (aged 12) and a James aged 13. I have no idea where James has suddenly appeared from since there is no trace of a baptism or death on Ancestry. He is not mentioned as a beneficiary in his father's will but a portrait of James is bequeathed to his sister Jessie, which may indicate that James is no longer alive in 1849. 3) The "Jessie" mentioned above. Again there is no record on Ancestry of her baptism, marriage or demise but she would have been born before 1832. No 1841 census record either. Any help very gratefully received but not much expected!! Thanks John

    3. I've got as far back in this line as Alexander LEFORT/E whose marriage licence in 1708 gives him as a bachelor, aged 37, making him born in 1671. At the time of his marriage he was living in St Anne Soho. He appears to have been employed by Gilbert Burnet the Bishop of Salisbury, as he was buried from the Bishop's house in 1712, and he was also a witness to the Bishop's will. I've searched records for St Martin in the Fields, from which parish St Anne was formed, and tried to find details of the household of Bishop Burnet.
