So, it looks like he died between the 1891 and 1901 censuses. Doing a FreeBMD search for the death of a Henry Saunders for that date range, there is only one for which the age is about right: and he happens to have the second name John. In addition, the Registration District is Hackney, which is very close to White Hart Lane. This was in 1898Sep, reference 1b 372. A few pounds spent on obtaining the certificate could pay off. 2. Hi List, My grandmother Jessie Sarah WILSON (nee SMITH) died in 1916 in Poplar leaving a bunch of abandoned children some of whom, I recently discovered, finished up at the Poplars Schools at Brentwood in Essex which I understand was an sponsored orphanage. I’ve found a general website for the schools but I’m having difficulty finding any records of admissions or discharges. Does A.K.S. have any information about this institution around 1916 and more importantly can anybody point me in the right direction to verifying which of the children might actually have been admitted. She married John James BREWER 20 Aug 1826, Old Church, Saint Pancras, London. A witness was Robert Pyne GIDLEY, presumably her father, grandfather, brother or uncle. They appear on the 1841 census (HO 107/665/13) in Islington. This indicates that Caroline was not born in this county. She had died before the '51 census. So far, I have been unable to locate either her birth/christening details, or a death certificate. Any ideas received with thanks. Lyn Wolf Australia

Alan, I believe I have found his army records on Ancestry...he reenlisted for WW1 from an address in Bristol, where he was working as a baker. The records state he was 19years 11 months old at his enlistment in 1894 and that his mother's name was Margaret. On the 1911 census, there is a Thomas (a baker) and an Edith Lily Timms in Bristol with children Edith Laura, Lillian Maud and Edith Rose. Army pension records also indicate that there was an Albert as well. But the census indicates he was born in Brize Norton and she in Bristol (possibly an error). Before I do any more digging, are the names of the children familiar to you? Do you have his father's name from the marriage certificate? Best wishes Kim

    3. Carol, There is a marriage between Elizabeth Haynes and William Fullbrook 21 June 1857 at St James' Church Shoreditch. This must be the Elizabeth who witnessed Charles Haynes' marriage. Her father is shown as Thomas Haynes and his occupation is general dealer. I have also found a possible marriage for Robert Haynes. If the marriage is correct, then then age is out by 10 years. However, it shows Robert as a cattle dealer and it shows his father as Thomas Haynes deceased. The marriage took place 21 Dec 1872 at St Andrew's Church Islington. It might be worthwhile looking for this couple on the 1881 census to see whether birth dates match up. 1. Re: [LON] Brickwall - LEE
    2. Robert Campbell
    3. Jean, welcome to the Lee family search and associated brick walls due to the very common surname. I too have a John LEE ancestor born around 1860 but mine was born at Southwark. If you have his father's name and occupation then like Jean advises obtaining a birth certificate will be the only way to go, unless someone on this lists finds a likely candidate on Ancestry's London baptisms database. A registry somewhere close to where John claimed he was born may be a start, but very often where a person thought he was born bears no comparison where the event actually took place, and very often it was the mothers home area where a child was actually born and maybe registered. Also if applying for a birth certificate and not 100% sure it is the correct one, you can these days for the same fee apply for the GRO to look for the correct entry one year either side of a year you nominate if you state you don't know the exact reference. In that case if the entry in Brentford shows his father was not John then the GRO will give you a total fee refund and you can search further. Lastly once you have found the correct entry I strongly suggest you add a "postit note" to the relative entry to the FreeBMD website, as this would be of emense assistance to all the other LEE researchers out there and you never know it may lead to fellow researchers with branches from your same LEE tree. This has happened to me several times especially as I include a "non computer recognised" e-mail address to each "post it note". cheers and best of luck, Bob ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jean Greenwood" <jeangreenwood@virginmedia.com> To: "Christine Ashby" <christine_ashby@btinternet.com> Cc: <LONDON@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, October 22, 2011 8:33 PM Subject: Re: [LON] Brickwall - LEE > Isleworth was in the Brentford registration district.. 3. This particular Haynes family have been a problem from the start, but brick by brick I have knocked a hole in the wall over 15 years and. With the help of LMA records now available on Ancestry a few more bricks have fallen out as well but, one question answered brings up more questions. I have now found my Gt Gt Grandfathers baptism and found he had at least one brother, this other brother is now proving just as difficult to find as my Gt Gt Grandfather. I found an entry on the 1851 census which looks correct but cannot find any further entries on 61,71,81 etc. I am not surprised about not finding them on 41 as i know some bits are missing I have tried husband, wife and all the boys – I realise the daughter could be married by 61 census. 2. Family Grows on Trees
    3. I have been researching my family tree for over ten years, and proudly have many of my ancestral lines completed up till at least 1837. However, one of my family names has proven very difficult – Saunders, and especially my gg grandfather: Henry John Saunders. He was born in about 1862 – 1865 in St Pancras. I can’t find the exact date, because there are so many Henry’s around at the time. In 1890, I have discovered his Marriage  - he was aged 25 and a General Dealer. Married on 13 May 1890 and lived at White Hart Lane. I also found out his father was called Thomas, and had died. Yes (!), I thought – I’ll find him in the Census before, but to no avail. I can’t find any Henry’s and Thomas’s apart from one in Bethnal Green – who is not them (because Thomas is still alive in 1901!). I do find Henry in the 1891 census (age 27), born in St Pancras with his child (John Henry George) and wife still living in White Hart Lane and is a Shop Dealer. Afterwards, I see no sign of him in 1901 and 1911. Finally, in his son’s marriage certificate, I discover he has died and his middle name was John. Can anyone help me please? I’m really stuck on this and would be grateful for any tips the members have on breaking through these numerous problems – particularly the common name. I particularly am keen to discover when Henry was born – I can then order the certificate, and start working back.  One of the most important things about this is I would really like to give the family tree to my uncle who celebrates his 90th birthday soon – he’s a direct ancestor and grandson of Mr Henry Saunders. Any help is appreciated by this fine list. Many thanks! Matt
