    3. Would like to know more about a William PRICE and his wife CATHERINE COLLINS. They married about 1841 in the Stepney area which is also where I think they had their children, these being: Cornelius (born 1842) Johannah (born 1843) Charlotte (born 1846) Alfred (born 1848) John Robert (born 1853) 1851 census gives address of 64 Peartree Court, Clerkenwell (I have scan of page) Other than the baptismal records for all five, I have not found any of them anywhere, except for John when he married Minnie CALLAN in 1870 in Victoria, Australia. _____________________________________ Visit my website at http://www.chrismahoney.co.nz/

    2. Chris Mahoney
    3. Hi I am trying to find one William HOWES, and his wife Caroline (nee TURNER) on the 1871 Census, and Caroline on anything earlier, but have had no success in doing so. July 1871 for the birth of their son, the certificate gives an address of 29 Rushton Street in Hoxton Old Town of where the family were living. Their wedding certificate of September 1870 also gives some address's, but these are not clear, wedding certificate can be viewed at: http://www.chrismahoney.co.nz/Query.htm Note that although wedding certificate lists that Caroline's father is Henry, I have heard a story (unconfirmed) that her parents are James TURNER, and Ann THOMAS. My main reason for wanting to find them on the 1871 census is to see what it says about the birth place for Caroline as I have nothing at all on her prior to her marriage. William and Caroline left England in 1874, so will not appear on future census's. Also have plenty on William's background so do not need anything on that. Thanks ================== Visit my website at: http://www.chrismahoney.co.nz/

    3. Hi, My brick wall relates to a Yates family. My gt gt grandfather's name was James Yates Grimwood and his mother, we believe was Sarah Grimwood. Where the Yates came from we do not have any idea but James was born 24 May 1824 and christened on 25 Jan 1831 at St Andrew's Holborn. His mother is named as Sarah Grimwood and father unknown. As Grimwood is a very Suffolk name I am wondering if anyone can throw any light upon Sarah. I did have a message saying that there was a possibility that a Sarah found in 1841 census as a servant in Marylebone and born out of county may possibly be the mother. If anyone can help I would be grateful. Best wishes Sue in Suffolk

    3. I have had a 'brick wall' that I have been trying to knock down for 40 years without success. My 2xgt grandfather, Thomas Barnard was born in 1790, and family naming patterns suggest his parents were named Thomas and Elizabeth. Margaret Cambridge, one of the kind members of this list found a marriage entry of Thomas Barnard & Elizabeth Richardson who were married at St. Dunstan in the West, 17 Nov 1775. They had at least two sons, William, christened, 31 May 1789, and Thomas, christened 24 October, 1790, both at St John-The-Baptist, Walbrook, City of London. My problem is that I can't prove or disprove that any of these people are my family. Although none of the given names are uncommon, they fit precisely in my family through the generations. I know the family details from the 1841 census to the present day. Thomas 1790 died in 1849 before the 1851 census that would have given his place of birth. They were living in Beccles, Suffolk at the time, but neither Thomas or Sarah his wife was born in the county. I would love to contact any descendants of this family so that we could compare our research. Alan British Columbia, Canada

    3. Hi Chris, I am pretty sure her address is 8, London Wall. It is very close to St. Giles. His looks like 22, Leaner Street but I cannot find that on Google maps but it may no longer be there or it says something different. I find the occupation difficult to read but is it mariner? If so are they at sea? I looked in the census for 1871 but without a definite date and place of birth for William it is difficult. I did find a "one world tree" for William which said 1849, Northumberland but I have previously found these trees to contain more fiction than fact. I did try that info but only briefly. Hope this helps, Christine -----Original Message----- From: Chris Mahoney Sent: Tuesday, October 25, 2011 12:49 AM To: LONDON@rootsweb.com Subject: [LON] Brickwall - HOWES Hi I am trying to find one William HOWES, and his wife Caroline (nee TURNER) on the 1871 Census, and Caroline on anything earlier, but have had no success in doing so. 2. Martin Johnson
    3. Frederick Chapman according to the documents we have in Australia came from Appleford Berkshire, but he had been a cheesemonger in London from at least 1823 to his departure in 1840. On his marriage to Sarah Sophia Berry at St George's Bloomsbury in 1839 he was living at 6 Grey's Inn Lane. He was over 40 when he married! Is it possible he had relations in London? Was he married before? We think his parents were John and Mary Rivers or Ann. Alfred Johnson born London around 1829, parents John Johnson and Catherine Ronan who we think were married at St Pauls Shadwell in 1811, left London (we think) he said his Father was an Excise Officer/Customs Officer but investigations at Kew of all the John Johnsons there seem to rule them all out. He seemed to turn up at a Boys home in Bristol on 1841 Census never to be heard from again until he married in Castlemaine Victoria in 1857. We have been looking since 1985.

    3. Hi My brickwall is Caroline Ann GIDLEY. She married John James BREWER 20 Aug 1826, Old Church, Saint Pancras, London. A witness was Robert Pyne GIDLEY, presumably her father, grandfather, brother or uncle. They appear on the 1841 census (HO 107/665/13) in Islington. This indicates that Caroline was not born in this county. She had died before the '51 census. So far, I have been unable to locate either her birth/christening details, or a death certificate. Any ideas received with thanks. Lyn Wolf Australia

    3. Can someone help me locate the burial of the above Jacob SMITH? He lived at 98 Mount Street, St. George Hanover Square after 1798 and before 1839. His wife, Honour (STEPHENS) SMITH is buried at All Souls Cemetery, Kensal Green, London - 11 September 1839. His son George SMITH is also buried at All Souls (1847). His other son, Jonah SMITH is buried at Norwood Cemetery, Lambeth (1866). Possible a daughter, Mary Elizabeth SMITH was buried at St. Dunstan Stepney 1800 (Ancestry.com). I have done a page by page search of All Souls on Ancestry.com (1833-1839) without success and have also looked for him on Findmypast.com and Ancestry.com anywhere in England. His son Jonah says he (Jonah) was born at Wootton, Oxfordshire (census records) but both he and his brother George were baptised at St. Mary Lambeth. Jacob and Honour were married in 1791 at Newington, St. Mary Southwark. Cannot locate him on the 1841 census. I have not been able to check London directories for him. Jonah was a hay and corn dealer; George was a dyer. -- Glenys www.quietacre.net

This must be the Elizabeth who witnessed Charles Haynes' marriage. Her father is shown as Thomas Haynes and his occupation is general dealer. I have also found a possible marriage for Robert Haynes. If the marriage is correct, then then age is out by 10 years. However, it shows Robert as a cattle dealer and it shows his father as Thomas Haynes deceased. The marriage took place 21 Dec 1872 at St Andrew's Church Islington. It might be worthwhile looking for this couple on the 1881 census to see whether birth dates match up.
