Good morning from New Zealand, I am having trouble finding a family on the census, (although found them only on the 1871c), the name I am looking for is Patrick CATON born c1859 Marylebone, Middx, England his father and mother John and Mary (both born Ireland) all children born Marylebone, I have death cert: for Patrick 1898 (died Kensington Infirmary,)so somewhere he is hiding, Patrick married Mary Day 1881 Marylebone, 2 children born Joanna 1885 and Mary 1891 no sign of them either, I am hoping someone can help me Thanking you all Eileen
Did she marry in England ? I couldn't spot an entry for that marriage to Edward Barlow, nor I could I spot the name of any of the censuses up to 1881 Have I missed her ? Anthony, She did marry in England, again according to all Australian certificates - on 30 November 1880 in Stockport Cheshire but there is no sign of the marriage in the Cheshire indexes. I contacted the Cheshire Free BMD list and they informed me that no marriages took place in Stockport on that date. I do have a photo of the happy couple - the usual - man sitting and woman standing and a ring clearly on view. I know the husband`s parents and family but know nothing about Gerty Rivers despite years of searching, I thought there may be some new indexes available in London that might throw some light on her? Hello Listers I have posted this a few months ago but without success so am trying once again in case there is anyone with a suggestion: I have been searching for many years for my great uncle Alfred BEZER born 1864 in Camberwell. He appears on the 1881 census as a 17 year old, but then completely disappears. I have been able to locate his siblings but have searched everywhere I can think of and can find no trace of Alfred. I subscribe to Find My Past and Ancestry.com.au and have searched their records, I have checked Free BDMs and the Commonwealth War Graves index, but have found nothing. I have searched the Death index from 1881 through as far as the index online goes. I am wondering if he emigrated prior to 1890 when Find My Past's emigration records begin. Does anyone know if there are any records of emigration prior to 1890 and if so, where I can access them. If anyone has any suggestion which may help I would be most grateful as I am most interested in knowing what became of him. Jan Haggart
Can sks help me to find Joseph WATTS please on the 1891 census. When he got married in November 1891 his address was 74 Alma St, Hoxton, but I cannot find him on the 1891 census. Is there a way of searching by Road name on this census? Then I can see if he was at number 74. The house exists because I can see the street details on the 1891 census on Findmypast.co.uk, but I do not have any credits to view the details (I have only a subscription to view the 1911 census). More info about Joseph. He was born in 1858 in Fletton (Huntingdonshire). I have him with his parents George and Jane, on the 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses and on the 1901 and 1911 censuses with his wife Emily. It is just 1891 that we cannot find him. Perhaps a new pair of eyes can find him, or sks can tell me how to search by street name TIA Yvonne
Hi Eileen Do you have the addresses from the marriage in 1881 and the childrens births ? I don't see a birth for either Mary or Joanna in Marylebone ? Hi Simon I see Frederick with sister Alice in the 1851 but not Thomas or Elizabeth the mother Can you post the 1851 census refs, plus any other year if you have them Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) PS its always best to post to individual lists rather than crosspost which can cause problems for list admins where people reply to lists they are not subscribed to You have posted to WILLCOX & London lists plus three posts to the *request* address for WILLCOX, Surrey & London, they are for subscribing or unsubcribing only > Hi everyone, > > I trust that you are all well. > > I am trying to find out further info about the above Thomas Willcox, > my ggg-grandfather, born c1810. Can someone please supply information re 2 students about 1670, Clement Hoy and Thomas Hoy. Thanks.
In some censuses mariners were included.1851 was the first to include those on ships in port and 1861 also included mariners at sea, as did later ones. Deaths at sea were enumerated in separate books form the national BMD registers. Some sites have these to search ( but you have to pay or have a subscription. However, if you ancestor was simply lost at sea ( as was one of mine on a fishing boat) you will have to sea if you can trace his seaman's record of service. Subscribing to the Mariners List might help Mariners-L-request@rootsweb.com You could also look at their website http://www.mariners-l.co.uk/UKPages.htm Anne On 7 Nov 2011, at 16:55, Simon Martin wrote: > Hi everyone, > > I trust that you are all well. > > I am trying to find out further info about the above Thomas Willcox, > my ggg-grandfather, born c1810. Hi everyone, I trust that you are all well. I am trying to find out further info about the above Thomas Willcox, my ggg-grandfather, born c1810. He was a Mariner, as was his son, Fredrick, who was on the Anna May/May Anna ship. On the census with Fredricks' baptism, in 1843, (on 1851 census) Thomas was still a Mariner However, Thomas disappears of the census' altogether, and I can't find any death records. Is there records for Mariner's/Sailor's who would have been buried at sea, assuming that's what happend to him. Could have been on Ship at the time of the Census' being taken? Could he have jumped ship? My cousin & I are rather frustrated with this, so any help gratefully appreciated, please. Simon
Thank you to everyone who sent me their thoughts on this subject. I now have the date of the death of his father, and also his fathers occupation and address. I think that is pretty amazing! And I would never have guessed that Stowage was a street in Deptford. Jill.

Hello All Could someone please help me with these two, who appear once (or twice) and then disappear? Mary Ann THAIN was a witness at two marriages of Thain brothers in 1827 and 1828 at St John, Clerkenwell, and cannot be found again. I believe she was probably born between 1795 and 1802, possibly in Norfolk, but more probably in London. Frederick George THAIN was born in July, 1827, christened in Clerkenwell in May 1929, and has vanished without a trace. He was not with his supoosed parents in Islington in the 1841 census. Any help in positively placing these people in the family would be greatly appreciated. Regards Phyl

Thanks Mike, didn't know that.....but have now looked at the Map and found the area concerned. The only reason I was puzzled, was that their first child is in the Baptismal records in 1888 the year after their Marriage there. That's Poplar on The Isle of Dogs :-) and the marriage might have been a civil marriage, in which case you won't find it in any Parish Register, which is what the London Marriages Indexes on Ancestry are based on. -- Regards, Mike Fry Johannesburg ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This mailing list works in parallel with the London surname interest list on the web at http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~hughw/london.html . Gertrude May Rivers was born in Brixton, London between 1855 and 1860 according to the information on her Australian death certificate and the birth certificates of her 5 children.
