Hello List, I have found a strange situation with one of my ancestors. I have a baptism for St Mary's church in Twickenham for Thomas Ashley GARLICK baptized May 6, 1756 son of Thomas and Jane GARLICK Twickenham, then I have just found another baptizim for Thomas Ashley GARLICK baptized Jan 14, 1825 son of Thomas and Jane GARLICK St George's Bloomsbury. I do know that Thomas and Jane GARLICK (nee) Shuckburgh, did have a son Thomas Ashley in Twickenham and then the family moved to Bloomsbury were two more daughters were born. Does anyone know how this is possible. Thanks Kind Regards Lori
Just wanted to follow up and say thanks again to those who helped with my question on Jacob SMITH. At the suggestion of Judy, Ann and John I called the cemetery and was given wonderful help from the lady at the office there. There were five people buried in the grave of Honour SMITH, wife of Jacob SMITH. Son George SMITH, his wife Constant, their daughter Constant H. NUNN and Alfred SMITH who is new to me. Sadly Jacob was not in the grave, so must keep looking. The person at Kensal Green Cemetery office gave me the grave number and the Square - grave 2161 square 4. If there is anyone on the list nearby to Kensal Green, could I please ask if a photo could be taken of the grave and emailed to me? This is the closest I've come to breaking down my huge brickwall of STEPHENS, LEWIN and SMITH in 43 years and I am excited! Glenys

Dear List, Can anyone tell me please if there was a French Huguenot church anywhere in the area of East Smithfield in the 18th century? Or which local churches do not appear on the IGI? I am trying to find Samuel Hensher/ Hansher/Henshaw born in 1776 and there are clues that he may have been born in that area. Is Wapping close by as there are Henshaws there in earlier times and also in the Minories.Grateful for any help. Many thanks Bev Robertson nee Hensher
Hi Jenny Jones Brothers' department store was founded by William Jones, who had come to London in 1867 and worked as a draper's apprentice until he and his brother John opened a small shop in Holloway. Their building was enlarged several times and by the 1890s included warehouses, workshops, stabling for 50 horses, and accommodation for assistants above the shop. In 1927 the store became one of the Selfridge Provincial Stores, and in 1940, it was bought by the John Lewis Partnership From: 'Islington: Economic history', A History of the County of Middlesex: Volume 8: Islington and Stoke Newington parishes (1985), pp. 69-76. URL: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=999 Date accessed: 14 November 2011. Not sure if this is any help. I think you will need to do more work on your JONES family(ies) before you can be sure either way. Best wishes Caroline > Is there anyone who could tell me the names of the JONES Bros. ???? > > Trying to find connections to my Frederick JONES b c1866 Italy (Brit. > Subject) who owned an Ironmongers and China Shop in Upper > Holloway/Highgate > prior to and after the 1911 census. > > I am also wondering if the Company named JONES & HIGGINS of Peckham, > Drapers > (Haberdashery)and Warehousemen are of the same family? Many thanks to all the kind people who replied to my post - both on and off list - to let me know that this was a department store and that the "inmates" would have been staff living on-site. What a helpful, knowledgeable lot you all are! Thanks again Angelika
Angelika, 338-366 Holloway Road was Messrs. Jones Bros., Drapers. Many employees would have lived 'over the shop'. Hi Angelika It's Jones Brothers, the department store. Back in those days, junior staff were expected to live "above the shop" Hope this helps Caroline > New to the London List - but not to Rootsweb. Hi New to the London List - but not to Rootsweb. I've tried to find information on Google, but with nil success, so was wondering if maybe some kind person here can help? I've found someone in the 1911 census, living at 338-366 Holloway Road in Islington, described as an "inmate". Does anybody know anything about this address? It wasn't a prison (which was the first thing I thought when I saw "inmate"). It can't have been a workhouse - most of the other "inmates" (pages and pages of them) were shop or office workers, the majority of them single. My guess is that it must have been some kind of hostel or boarding house. Does anyone know more, or know where I can find out more? Most of my family research has been centered around Lancashire so far, so I'm not very familiar with London resources. TIA Angelika
Ruth, Woolf Street was just south of St Saviour Dock, between Dockhead and the railway. http://london1878.com/stanford37b.htm The 1881 returns seem to start at RG11/563 folio 9 page 17. Hello Anne Thanks for pulling me into line! Apologies to the list. This is the information that I sent to Adrian ."Charles Henry Lush married Elizabeth Budd 21 Aug 1860. The marriage took place at the St Pancras Church and gave Charles address as MELBOURNE VICTORIA! It would appear therefore that Charles and probably parents emigrated to Australia much earlier than you thought and may be the reason that you can't find them on the census records". I have offered to help Adrian with any research that he may want to do on the Australian side of his research. According to the baptism he was born on 27 May,presumably the previous year. His father was a servant & they lived in Great Chesterfield Street. There is a couple called Charles & Martha Lush who appear in later censuses from 1851 to 1891 but they live in Dorset and Somerset. Like you, I can't find any trace of this family in the censuses. But capital L's are often mistranscribed as 'S' and 'u' is often read as 'a'. So have you tried looking for SASH and LASH? Charles Henry LUSH, son of Charles and Martha, was baptised in St Mary-le-Bone parish church on 2 January 1839. I have been unable to find him in any census return from 1841 to 1861 inclusive. At some stage he married. I have as yet been unable to identify his wife but I know that she died on 14 December 1863 as quoted on his second marriage entry. He arrive in Melbourne, Australia on board the Norfolk on 14 November 1865. His son Charles Josiah aged 12 years and 1 month died there on 22 November 1873. Charles senior was reported as being from Camden Town. He married Lucy Ann PERRIAM (my g g aunt) in 1876 and suibsequently died in 1908. I would appreciate any help in locating his whereabouts between 1841 and 1861. Adrian Yorkshire
Thank you to those who helped re the DNA testing for my Gould connections. Does anyone else have a Gould in their tree who might have some further ideas? Thankyou.
I am hoping someone might help me find the death of my great uncle, William John ELLIOTT. He was born in Cuckfield, Sussex, 1879. The family moved to Ealing, Middlesex, shortly after his birth. Sometime in the early part of the 1900's, he was admitted to Hanwell Asylum. The only mention of this man was made by my aunt one day. She stated she was 5 or 8 years old when my grandmother went to visit William at the asylum. My aunt thinks this is when he died. My aunt was born in 1915 so this would make the date 1920 up to 1923. I have looked on the FreeBMD site but no one seems to fit. Either the ages are quite off or the districts don't agree. Does someone have any idea where I can go from here, please? Regards, Anna Franklin Canada
