    1. [LLOYD] Looking for Lesley Lloyd (deceased) Born circa 1910 in the London Area
    2. Ian Davis
    3. Sylvia was born in Phaleron, Greece in August 1942, as a result of a union between her mother Stamatina Lagou and her father Staff Sergeant Leslie Lloyd. Following the tragic loss of both parents she was evacuated to the UK as an infant with step-parents (long story short). >From the photograph (attached) that Sylvia has of her father, he wears the regimental lapel badge of the RASC, it appears from his service ribbons that he is wearing a General Service Medal and Long Service and Good Conduct medal. If he was 35 in 1942 he could have been in service since he was 16, i.e. 19 years which would be consistent with the long service and Good Conduct ribbon. It is thought that Leslie went out to Greece with his regiment in 1940 or before to help the Greeks repel the Italians and there is a presumption that Leslie joined up with the Greek resistance after the German invasion, and would only be able to visit his wife with the help of the resistance. Tragically Leslie was “given away” possibly by the Italians, to curry favour with the Germans, who arrested and shot him sometime in mid-1942 as Stamatina was known to be carrying their daughter (Sylvia) at that time. Sylvia’s birth was registered by her grandfather. Sylvia has exhausted steps so far to trace her father through the normal routes (War Graves Commission, General Register Office, etc.) and part of the problem is that there is no documentation on Leslie Lloyd, who it has been established was born in the London area circa 1905 (could be as late as 1910). This is an estimation of date of birth from Greek relatives who maintain that Leslie was around 35 in Greece at the time of his marriage to Stamatina before the German invasion (1941). Sylvia has no birth certificate for herself, although her marriage certificate does state that her father’s occupation was Gunner Royal Artillery, but it does look like the lapel badge is RASC and not RA (It may have been her step-fathers occupation?). Summary – Leslie Lloyd · Born – 1905/07 in a London District of the UK · He was 35 in 1940/42 in Greece · Joined the RASC as a boy at around 16, circa 1921/23 · Consistent with the 17-year LS medal · Killed by Germans in Crete in 1942 aged around 35 We would appreciate any advice or assistance you could give use to assist in finding out more information for Sylvia. Kind regards. Carol and Ian Davis (Sylvia’s daughter and son-in-law) e.mail – [email protected] [email protected]

    3. Thanks David for your reponse. I am currerently in USA on holiday and within that mid-way through a 9 day bus tour in New England. Within the last week or so I spent 2 days at the Connecticut State Library, a day at the Connecticut Historical Society, plus a Saturday afternoon at the NEGS in Boston with more there to come within a few days from now. I have yet to fully digest the information obtained. Thus far I have established William R Lloyd of New Haven (born TN) is the son (or a son) of Henry P Loydd and Laura Barnes. I have not completely disproved a direct, or indirect, link between them and my William James Lloyd. In addition, I have yet to establish the place of death of Henry P Lloyd; a possibility is in Montgomery County TN where it seems he worked on a large tabacco estate. It seems William R was born Nashville TN - yet to be confirmed. Henry P's place of birth also awaits confirmation. I have been advised no Lloyds owned land in Southington in the period of interest other than Laura Lloyd (nee Barnes ) who was bequeathed 14 acres by her father in his will - have seen copy of his probated will. No probate has been found in CT for Laura so she is likely to have sold the land before her death. 3. Thanks very much for the replies received - each of them is much appreciated. I had come across at least one family who lived close to the NY/CT border and wonder about them because of the names and another which moved (or partly moved) from Long Island NY to CT. To potentially confuse things there is another (?) William Lloyd who per the 1870 Federal Census was born in Tennessee about 1825 (and/or another born New York NY the same year) living in Ward 6, New Haven CT. On pages 130 and 131 are; Lloyd, William R, 45, M, W, Book keeper, $0 real estate, $300 personal; estate, born Tennessee; Lloyd, Charlotte He, 41, F, W, Keeping House, $2,000 real estate, born Conn. Fannie E Lloyd aged 15, attended school during year; Laura Barns aged 75; Louisa M Carr, 38, Fancy Goods Clerk, $2,000 real estate, born Conn; and Elizabeth B Sherman aged 38, seamstress, $2,000 real estate, born Conn. >From this and other information there may have been two Laura Barn(e)s born within a couple of years of each other unless 'Barns' was not the maiden name of this Laura Barns. Cheers Ray

One of his daughters (Helen), married a MARKS and one of her daughters (Rayner) married a SKINNER. I am seeking; (a) Proof of birth, and proof of William's parents who may have been Henry P LLOYD and Laura BARNES. William is thought to have been born at Southington Connecticut, 23 August 1834. (b) Details of any siblings of William. William is alleged to have arrived in New Zealand about February 1855 on the whaling ship 'Saratoga', 37 months out of New Bedford, Massachusetts. He may have signed on as HOYT, or HOYT may have been his real surname? Equally HOYT may have been an error. The voyage records suggest he is likely to have returned to the ship's home port rather than jumping ship (or similar); that though is not proven. He married Helen YATES 9 March 1859 Auckland, New Zealand. Helen was born 10 December 1842 at Newarthill, Bothwell Lanarkshire, Scotland. She is understood to have arrived in Auckland, NZ in 1853. There were 10 known children, all born in New Zealand. William died Whananaki, Northland, New Zealand on 18 March 1899. His death notice states 'Home papers copy'. This could have been for either William or Helen's families, or both?
