Here is some of the information I have about the Hugh Littleton family line. I hope this is useful to someone and if you have any additions or corrections I would be pleased to receive them. Many of my ancestors from the Littleton and Jenkins lines stretch back from Adams County, Illinois to Clermont County, Ohio. My G-Grandmother is Leeta Belle Littleton who is a sister to Hugh Loraine Littleton. (I do not believe "Loraine" was a birth name but more likely a nickname.) My records show the entire family as: Father: Thomas Loraine Littleton b. 15 Aug 1849 in Hammond, Spencer, Indiana d. 27 Oct 1944 in Quincy, Adams, Illinois Buried in Curless Cemetery in Loraine, Ill. Mother: Sarah Ellen Cross b. 4 April 1851 d. 18 Dec 1917 Buried in Curless Cemetery in Loraine, Ill. Children: 1. Hugh Loraine Littleton b. 27 Aug 1873 Loraine, Adams, Ill d. 9 Dec 1934 Spouse is Sarah Ann Hudson (married1899 in Keene Twp, Adams, Ill.) 3. Doran Littleton b. 14 Aug 1875 Loraine, Adams, Ill d. 15 Oct 1875 4. Rosa Ellen Littleton b. 18 Apr 1877 Loraine, Adams, Ill d. 23 Apr 1882 Burial is Big Neck, Keene Twp, Adams, Ill 5. James Alfred Littleton b. 10 Dec 1883 Loraine, Adams, Ill d. 1974 Loraine, Adams, Ill. Spouse is Mary Elfie Mcarthur (married 9 Oct 1912 in Mendon, Adams, Ill) - ------------------------------ Thomas Loraine Littleton's father is Hugh Littleton. Hugh Littleton's family is as follows: Father: Hugh Littleton b. 1825 d. 1901 Adams, Illinois (note: Struck by an Engine will crossing RR tracks) Buried in Curless Cemetery in Loraine Married 27 Oct 1842 (Clermont, Ohio) Mother: Elizabeth Plackard b. 1826 in Ohio (probably Clermont County) Children: 1. Frances M. Littleton (known as Frank) b. abt 1846 Clermont, Ohio d. buried in Curless Cemetery in Loraine, Ill Spouse2 was Mary Catherine McDaneld (married abt 1848 in Indiana) Spouse 1 was Laura Ellen Allen (Married 11 Mar 1874) 2. William H. Littleton b. Aug 1847 Ohio d. 1934 Adams, Ill. Buried in the Curless Cemetery in Loraine, Ill Spouse was Sarah Ann Woods (married abt 1872 in Adams, Ill) 3. Thomas Loraine Littleton b. 15 Aug 1849 in Hammond, Spencer, Ill. d. 27 Oct 1944 Quincy, Adams, Il Spouse: Sarah Ellen Cross (Married 2 Jan1870 in Loraine, Adams, Ill) Buried in the Curless Cemetery in Loraine, Ill 4. S.J. Littleton (female - perhaps Sarah) b. 1855 in Indiana d. 5. R. Littleton (female) b. 1857 in Spencer, Indiana d. 6. Hester Littleton b. 1859 in Hawesville, Hancock, Kentucky - --------------------------- Thomas Loraine Littleton's father is Hugh Littleton. It appears that Hugh Littleton's mother is named Sarah Littleton, who being unable to support her child gave him into indenture as a servant of a Mr. John Gaskins in Clermont County, Ohio 29 July 1829 (the document shows that Hugh was age 5 and his birthday was Feb 1. ) This is the document that Bud refers to in his recent post and that was discovered a number of years ago by my sister LuWain Brostrom Proctor. There is a person named Thomas Littleton whose spouse is listed as Catherine B. Hymer that lived in Clermont County at this time and seemed to be a properous citizen. I have information that shows he was acquainted with Mr. Gaskins. Thomas and Catherine were married March 23, 1813 in Clermont County. I can speculate that there must be some tie between Thomas Littleton and Sarah (Hugh's mother) but I have been unable to find any information on Sarah. - ---------------------------- Other interesting Information: Sarah Ellen Cross's father is Joseph Cross. He was known as old Joe Cross and was put in a poor home late in life. I have been unable to find any information on the Cross line. The following quote about Hugh Littleton is attributed to a family bible and information provided by Mrs Neva Grotz (Jenkins) and Mrs. Ben Jenkins: "The Littleton's lived in Kentucky when the Civil war broke out. When Mr. Littleton (father of the family) found out Kentucky had entered the war and were fighting for the South, he packed his family and few possessions in a wagon and crossed the Ohio River at night. The next morning the river was patroled and no one was allowed to leave. The family moved to Wisconsin and father and the two older sons enlisted." (note: I have obtained civil war records for Hugh Littleton and his son Frances.) Another quote from the same source concerning Thomas Loraine Littleton: "Mr. Littleton was born in Indiana but moved early in life to Loraine, Illinois and spent most of his life in and near Loraine. He was there when they built the Carthage branch of the C.B.&O Railroad. While walking up the track, when it was first laid, he asked Mr. Lienberg what they expected to name the town and was informed that it would be named Loraine for Mr. Leinberg's daughter. Mr. Littleton was a farmer and carpenter. One of his hobbies in his later years was making axe handles. He enjoyed cutting wood and would spend long hours in the timber cutting wood for fuel. His death was due to old age as he lived to be ninety five years old. He was an active person until the last three or four years of his life." Hugh Littleton was my G-grandfather...and he is buried in Loraine, IL...along with many other Littletons. I believe that his father was Thomas, but I will do some checking. The Quincy, IL Public Library has a great genealogy section and the staff there is very helpful. (I was the Acting Dir. there for awhile.) Hope this is helpful...
