Hi y'all (that's FL talk) As sponsor of this newsgroup, and since I get into conversations with many people here and there, it occurred to me that there are quite a few people on here that don't know how to use a very valuable tool for tracking down family members. Soooooooo, I thought I'd post a Helpful Hint on here. For example, I just got an e-mail from someone (please don't take offense because I used you as an example) that stated 'I know they died about 1920 in (a certain county and state), but don't know their parents or where they are buried.' OK, depending on the county and state, birth and death certificates were required after a certain date. In most of OH it's about the mid 1800's. >From then up to around 1900, these records can usually be found in the Probate Court of that county. After about 1900, they were required to be sent to the state and are usually at the State Vital Statistics Office. Now these office names and dates will vary from state to state and county to county, but that's a rough timeline. Also, if you are lucky, that particular county might have some records from before they were required by law to keep them. Almost every death cert I have seen lists decedents name, place and date of birth, place and date of death, parents names and usually their place of birth, the undertaker and the place of burial, and if married, the spouses name. This is great information for tracking a family back. Usually you can write and sometimes e-mail the appropriate office and ask for a copy. Uncertified copies are usually under a $1. Now something else that goes along with this is that persons Will which will usually be in the County Probate Court. This is a great source for finding the heirs (only those living will be mentioned) and where they might be living. Once you find the exact date of death, find out where copies of old newspapers with obituaries are kept. I have found this to be the local library, or some counties have Archive offices. If not, someone at the library will usually point you to the right place. Obits are invaluable for finding children, siblings and wifes names, places of birth and where they are currently living. The above research method works great in most instances back into the mid 1800's once you find who has the records. I have tracked a line back 4 or 5 generations this way. Hope this didn't bore all of you that already know this, but I thought it might be very useful to some of our newcomers who don't quite know all the tricks yet. Good hunting - Terry Littleton (listdad)

Hi Terry, Thanks for the welcome to the Littleton line. And, yes I can dispute some of the info that you mentioned. I joined this mailing list in hopes that someone out there might just have the answer that will help me pinpoint that William and Sarah are Thomas's parents. This MILER line (Ephraim) that you mentioned is my DAR line so I do know quite a bit, on my direct line. Some of the children off this line I have a lot; and I also have some imcomplete information (some which is not proven). If you want to write to me directly that is fine. First I do know that my Thomas LITTLETON line is proven up to him. I am trying to find his parents. What I posted for children of Thomas earlier is correct. My name is Wanda Albers and Robert Lee Albers is my husband. I have in the past corresponded with some people who have not taken the information that I have sent to them into consideration when they posted or wrote. I have seen my name on the internet with lines that you have mentioned. I have tried my best to get this straightened out and I don't know how to even go about getting it done. I sent one gentleman my lineage and he published it in his book and put it out on the internet, HOWEVER he chose to put what he wanted too. There are a lot of errors in his work. It's just too bad that it's out there for everyone to see. My first LITTLETON is: My g.g.grandmother Emaline LITTLETON, she is the daughter of Thomas LITTLETON and Mary (Polly) MATLOCK. Her parents were married in Washington Co, NC which is now Washington Co, TN (when TN became a state in 1796). Again information is out there that it was Hawkins Co, TN this could be true. There is a document which has a deposition by Jesse Matlock which states that his sister Mary (Polly) Matlock married Thomas Littleton in Washington Co, TN and that their first son was James. I have another document that names Thomas and Mary MATLOCK LITTLETON'S children and Emaline and James are listed as children. Don't know where this information came from that is being circulated around that Emaline is the daughter of James. I'm sure it is from earlier researchers who have chose to assume alot ot things. James and Emaline are brother and sister. According to the 1850 and 1860 census's the year 1768 is used to calculated Thomas's birth. He was 82 in 1850 and 92 in 1860 so Thomas was born about this time. No exact date is known. Questions: (1)Do you have a marriage record for William and Sarah COTTINGHAM LITTLETON? I would love to learn anything about them. (2)Do you know anything about the son William F. LITTLETON that you mentioned? (3) Do you know where William F and Thomas were born? Was it NC or was it the part of NC that is now TN? I truly would love to find proof that William and Sarah are the parents of my Thomas. I will take anything that anyone has on older William and Sarah. Maybe it would give me a clue as to where to even begin to look. As far as the Emaline Littleton and Ephraim L. M. MILLER lineage you mentioned. The 1850,1860,1870,1880 TN census records the children for Ephraim and Emaline are: 1. Mary Jane Miller (Neergaard) (Hall) 2. Rev. James Thoms Miller (my g.grandfather) 3. William W. Miller 4. John Richard Miller 5. Andrew Payton Miller 6. Ephraim M. Miller Jr. 7. Sarah Elizabeth Miller (Tinnel) 8. Malinda E. Miller 9. George W. Miller You mentioned a David G Miller b. 1847. I do not find this on the census records. Did he die young? He doesn't appear on the 1850 census or on the document naming Thomas's children. I've never ran across this name. For James and Catharine BROWN LITTLETON; I have these children: Again I have used the 1850, 1860, 1870 census records and a Loose Leaf document from Roane County, TN. Some people have used the book "History of Roane Co, TN" by Emma Wells to put this family together. This book has errors on the Littleton pages. 1. William ? Littleton 2. Mary Littleton (Miller) 3. Sarah Jane Littleton (Breazeale) 4. Thomas Jefferson Littleton 5. John J. Littleton 6. Martha C. Littleton (Sturgess) 7. Jesse M. Littleton 8. Pleasant Green Littleton 9. George P (Press) Littleton 10. Elizabeth E. Littleton (Huffine) 11. Ragan Dock Littleton (THIS IS NOT PROVEN) I use PAF program for my information. But I recently was given an older version of FTM as a gift, I have just begun to use it for my mother's line. So far I only have about 10 names. I would be happy to post anything or answer any questions on the LITTLETONS. I have researched this family for the last 10 years. But I can't get beyond Thomas. Thanks Terry for your response. You have (listdad). Are you head of this mailing list? How do you descend from this massive LITTLETON'S? Wanda
Has anyone besides myself and Linda ever come across a Littleton wife named Liney or Linny that died in Clarke Co, VA ? She had a son named Benjamine Franklin LITTLETON. Terry Littleton (listdad) Terry
Hi Wanda and welcome to the wonderful world of LITTLETON family research ARGHHHHHHHH!! ha ha In reply to your post, I show some conflicting data. I think you're missing a generation. I show the following: William Littleton was married to Sarah Cottingham 1770 in NC They had sons Thomas Littleton b 1772 and William F b abt 1778 Thomas was married to Mary (Polly) Matlock 1794 in NC They had a son James Littleton b abt 1794. They moved from NC to Hawkins Co, TN in 1797 James Littleton married Katherine (Kitty) Brown 30 Dec 1819 both of Hawkins Co, TN Their kids were: Pleasant Green b 1820 Emaline b 12 Feb 1822 William N b 1823 Eliza Jane b 1826 Thomas Jefferson b abt 1835 Dock b abt 1838 George P b 1843 I show Emaline (Lina) Littleton (b 12 Feb 1822 TN, d 7 May 1899 Oaksdale, WA) married Ephrim L Moore Miller 22 Jul 1841 in Kingston, Roane Co, TN. They had kids: Mary Jane Miller b 14 Oct 1842 James Thomas Miller Rev b 14 Feb 1844 William W Miller b 1845 David G Miller b 1847 John Richard (Jack) Miller b 2 Aug 1849 Andrew Payton Miller b 7 Dec 1851 Sarah Elizabeth b 1855 Ephrim Moore Miller Jr b 1859 George W b 1862 If your father was Robert Lee Albers, I have lots of data on this line from William and Sarah up to you. This data was not compiled by me, so I can't vouch for the accuracy of it. If you can dispute some of this, let us all know so we can get it right. If you have Family Tree Maker, I can send you a tree of this whole line. Terry Littleton (listdad) Terry
Hi, Newcomer to the Littleton mailing list. This is my LITTLETON lineage. I descend from Emaline LITTLETON who married Ephram MILLER. Her parents are Thomas and Mary (MATLOCK) LITTLETON My questions: (1) Does anyone have proof of the parents of Thomas? I have found that it is William and Sarah (COTTINGHAM) LITTLETON are passed around, but I can not find this proof. (2) What realation was Charles LITTLETON of Hawkins Co, TN to Thomas, if any? Thomas LITTLETON b. about 1768 in NC and died abt 1867 in Roane Co, TN. He married Mary MATLOCK in Washington Co, TN before 1798. Children are: 1. James born about 1798 2. William born about 1800 3. Elizabeth born about 1804 4. Pleasant born about 1806 5. Mary born about 1807 6. Malinda born about 1812 7. Sarah born about 1816 8.. George b. 26 Feb 1818 9. Emaline b. 12 Feb 1822 married Ephraim MILLER 27 Jul 1841 in Roane Co, TN. 10. Minerva born about 1829 Hope someone out there can help me. Willing to share what info I have. Wanda

Hi all, If anyone has the following CD #'s, I'd sure appreciate a couple lookups for LORENZO LITTLETON that is supposed to be on them. # 400 Marriage Index - Selected counties of Ohio (this one especially) WFT # 9 tree # 2246 Thanks in advance - Terry Littleton (listdad) Terry
Since we just found my ggg gf grave last week, I thought this was kind of appropriate when I saw it on another board. I thought some of you might enjoy it. Have any of you ever finally found a relative several generations back like a ggg gf that was buried so near to where you lived that you passed by it many times, but NEVER knew they were there till many years later. Kind of a strange feeling huh? Hi all, Is there anyone of you out there that is descended from any LITTLETON from Warren Co, OH? I'm on the verge of a major (to some of us anyway) breakthrough (I think) but I need some serious information about the Littleton families that were in Warren Co, OH in the 1830's to 1850's. Thanks Terry Littleton (listdad) Terry
If you look on genforum (Littleton genealogy)there is information about Southy Littleton in 1820s GA>1880 AL . webb addresss:http://www.genforum.familytreemaker.com/Littleton/ Juanita Long
Greetings from snowy Central CA. Just today I learned of a letter in which the following appears: LOREN Littleton, born 1850 (place unkonwn) + Grace Bell,(possibly), born 1854 (place unknown) were parents of : Charles, born 1875, and Mary, dob unknown. Since my half sister, child of my father's marriage to Lena Rae Edwards, who was born 1908, AR., was named LORENE, we wonder if there is a connection?!?!?! Marketta in Madera

I received this as a post from a non-subscriber and thought it was of interest to the group so I'm posting it here with my reply. Thomas Littleton MARTIN b 12 May 1791, Northampton Co.,VA, d 6 May 1835, Washington DC, md Harriet Lanphier. I have done a good bit of searching for connection to the LITTLETONs who were among the original settlers on the Eastern Shore. It seems that the name shows up as a given name in families that had little if any connection to the Littleton family. This also seems to happen with the name SOUTHEY. Can anyone any comment about this? Ellen L. Martin ellenmartin@exotrope.net Ellen, Yes, I agree completely. I constantly get inqueries about family connections to the Littletons which resulted in Littleton as a given name with another surname. I read that the Littletons were very highly respected back in MD and VA and people would name their kids Littleton something just out of respect. Wonder how many Clinton Littletons there will be? HA HA (Thought everyone could use a BIG laugh)
Hi Gang, I just received a letter from an individual searching for Dorcas Littleton who was born about 1813 and married John Phillips in 1832 in Muhlenberg Co., Kentucky. Does this ring a bell in anyones family tree? Jimmy
