    2. Hi I don't know anything about that particular book, but I do know about the Littleton ralationship that caries over to George Washington if you don't have that. Martha Washington's first husband was a Custis which was the descendant of a Littleton Custis marriage. Terry Littleton - (listdad)

    3. Hello List members, This is excerpts form the book titled "Life as Revealed Through Early American Court Records" by E.T. Crowson. I hope that you'll find it useful. Still hoping that someone out there will be able to tell me where to find this book. ROB Of the pages sent to me, on page 50..."At a court held January 24, 1654, Mrs. Ann Littleton (the Col. was dead) petitions against her servant Thos. Bullock for very opprobious speech and scandalous manners. He was orders 30 lashes. His wife Christie was to have a gag put in her mouth to restrain her from her railing language, which is to be put in as often as occasion shall require, until her words and actions shall express good behavior towards her said Mistress Littleton." Without having the whole book, I can't figure out who the Ann's husband was. (the Col.) PG. 57...."The will of Mrs. Ann Littleton is recorded Novr 1656. Edward Littleton, the eldest son, had the plantation in Magotta Bay, and Southy Littleton the plantation at Nandue. To Hester she gives a large personal Estate, she being then 8 years old. She left her in the hands of Mrs. Eyre till she should be ten years old, then under the care of Mrs. Col. Douglas, in case of a failure of male heirs in Virginia, she leaves it to James Littleton, Esq. of Shropshire, near London, her wearing apparel, her furniture, .......She left her son Edward her executor, with Col. Ewd Douglas, Rev. Francis Doughty and Capt. Francis Potts her overseer. Her son Edward married Sarah, eldest daughter of Col. Ewd. Douglas. She left a legacy to Littleton Scarburgh, who was her Grandson." PG 59...."At a court held Sept. 1657, ....... At the request of Col. Robins and Douglas and Capt. Pott, Edward Littleton, John Robins and Wm. Mellinge were added to the commission." PG 66...."Edward Littleton marries Sarah, the daughter of Col. Edw. Douglas, Esq., 1657." PG 70...."From the 25th March 1661 to 25th March 1662, there is recorded 43 children baptized;....There were 35 marriages and 14 burials. Teste Jno. Laurence, Clerk of Hungars parish. .....Grace Littleton, daughter of Edward and Frances Littleton, born 4 DEC 1661;..." PG 71..."The will of Edward Littleton recorded 1663. He was from Barmbrough, County of York, England. he left one son, Jno. Roberts, to whom he gave his plantation on the seaside, 550 acres. The will of Edward Littleton recorded 1663. To his daughter Grace he left a tract of land called Mannaheridans Neck. To his wife Frances a large estate, and if her child a son it was to have all his houses and lands. He left the Court his overseers." This is a little strange. Was this a misprint? Was the first son Jno. Roberts Littleton? PG 79..." Edward Littleton married in 1661 Frances the daughter of Col. Obedience Robins." PG 87..." At a court held in February 1670/1 Mr. Southy Littleton is on the bench from Accomack." on the bench...does this mean a Judge??? PG 103..." Francis Pigott married Frances, the widow of Nathl Littleton (2d) and daughter of Obedience Robins." No date listed here exactly. Citing above is will of Alice Curtis 1663. Citing below is sale of land in 1679. PG 94..."Southy Litttleon died in Albany, New York, where his will as recorded Novr. 12, 1679. John Willett and John Eyre are witnesses and must have been with him. Robt Livingston is also a witness. It was recorded in Northampton Court in 1861. He left seven children, vix.: Nathl, Bowman, Southey, Esther, Sarah, Elizabeth and Gertrude. His overseers were Mr. Teackle, Col. Kendall, Edward Bowman, Jno. Robins, Danl Jenifer and Richard Bayly. There were entailed to his son Natl 4050 acres of land in Maggotha Bay, to his son Bowman lands at Chincoteague and in Somerset, Maryland, to his son Southey 2270 acres of Land at Nandue, to his daughter Esther a neck of land called Kings Neck on Swanscott Creek and Gingoteague, to Sarah 400 acres at Pocomoke in Accomack. He left to Nathl Tunnell all his land at Ochocomson in Accomack, also his wearing apparel, except his rapier and cloak. His son Bowman was to live with Richd Bayly, Ester with his Sister Robins, Sarah with Bridget Foxcroft, Elizabeth with Mrs. Jenifer and Gertrude with Major Bowman, and Southey to be kept four years with his nurse, Nicholas Taylors's wife. He married (name not shown in mss.-Jem): she was probably dead at the time." PG. 108...."At July Court, 1699, the laws of the last session of Assembly were read and published in the hearing of the inhabitants of the county then present. Capt. Nathl Littleton sworn sheriff and Southey Littleton sub sheriff." PG. 111...."In 1703 Nathl Littleton (2d) died. He left a son Southey and two daughters, Sarah Curtis and Ester. He gave Sarah his land on Pitts Creek in Accomack. Made Col. Curtis, Major Waters, Southey Littleton and Robt Andrews overseers of his will and 20 shillings to buy a ring for each. His widow was Susanna." PG 119..." Immediately after 1640 a brisk trade had been developed with the Dutch. This had accounted for the number of Dutch on the Eastern Shores by 1650. Many of the immigrants, although Englishmen, had settled in Holland, because of the conditions at home, before coming to Virginia. Such was the case of John and William Custis who came to Virginia before 1640......Out of all this immigration and settlement there grew an isolated aristocracy in the early Seventeenth Century which perpetuated itself for years with no appreciable admixture of outside blood. Such prominent families as the Scarburgh, Yeardley, Upshur, Littleton, Wise and Custis families intermarried and kept a firm hold on the government. Thus, the aristocratic character of the Virginia society here, as elsewhere in the colony was the result of development within the colony and it preceded from economical, political, and social causes."

    3. Hi Terry & list members, Does anyone know of or have the book titled, "LIFE AS REVEALED THROUGH EARLY AMERICA COURT RECORDS -Including The Story of Col. John Custis of Arlington, Queen's Creek and Williamsburg" by E.T. Crowson? {Long title I know} Uncertain of publisher or date. I gather it deals with Virginia 17 Century Virginia. A fellow searcher, who I don't think is on this list, snail mail me copies of the pages listing LITTLETON's The index lists, Ann; Bowman; Edward; Elizabeth; Ester; Frances; Gertrude; Grace; Hester; Nathaniel; Sarah; Southy Littleton. Unfortunately, I only got a few pages. The book looks as if it would be a great read. Does anyone know any more information about this book? Where it was published? When? Is it still available to purchase from the publisher? Any input would be greatly appreciated. One paragraph was most interesting...{paraphrased}...Out of all this immigration and settlement there grew an isolated aristocracy in the early seventeenth century which perpetuated itself for years with no appreciable admixture of outside blood. Such prominent families as the Scarburgh, Yeardley, Upshur, Littleton, Wise and Curtis families intermarried and kept a firm hold on the government. Thus, the aristocratic character of the Virginia society here, as elsewhere in the colony, was the result of development within the colony and it preceded from economical, political and social causes.[PG. 119] Rob

    1. Re: ANOTHER YEAR
    2. Hi Terry, Yeah, I know what you mean about having a genealogical "wall"! Mine, as you know, is my great-great-grandfather, Thomas Littleton, who died in (or near) Powellville, MD, in 1845 (his wife, Mary [or "Polly"] Lewis lived until 1865). Any information on Thomas & especially his immediate forebears will be GREATLY appreciated! BTW, in your message you mentioned that you've recently paid the "sponsor fee" for the list. I have no idea whatsoever how heavy that fee is, but, as we all benefit from your sponsorship, it would seem only fair that it be divided 81 ways! Please let us know how much each of us ought to kick in! Again, thanks for all you've done re the Littleton cause! And keep up the good work! Cheers, Scott C. 1. ANOTHER YEAR
    2. Littleton, Terry
    3. Greetings all subscribers. I just sent in the sponsor fee to keep this list going for another year at least. I started it last March and can't believe how many Littleton relatives I have met since then. I just counted, and unless some of you have subscribed with multiple e-mail addresses (like I have), we now have 81 subscribers. Just wanted everyone to know what was going on. Since I help so many people on here, and since I sponsor this list, I'm gonna take this opportunity to explain my 'genealogy wall' and force you to read it (HA HA) in hopes that someone out there might be of some help. To be honest, I really haven't learned much on MY family from this newsgroup. My family wasn't as prolific a group as a lot of families were. Myself, my father and my gf were all only kids. Before that, 4 kids was about the max. So there aren't TONS of relatives to ask stuff of. OK - here goes: My WALL is my ggg gf John Wesley Littleton. I knew where and when he died (1838 in Clark Co, OH) but I didn't know where he was buried or his parents. We found his grave about two months ago. Unfortunately, he died in 1838 at the age of 32 which meant he didn't have a will and it's to early for his death to be recorded there. Believe me, we (I had a lady there helping me) tore everyplace we could think of apart in Clark Co. looking for some reference to his death or parents names. NOTHING. JWL had 3 other children besides my gg gf. I have contacted everyone in my direct line with no luck on finding JWL's parents names. One other sons line I have lost in the late 1800's in Springfield MO, one son disappeared from Hardin Co, OH when he became an adult (I have a death date for him from a deceased relative but I don't know if it's in OH or not and it's just a tad to early for Ohio State death records) and the 4th child (a daughter) has gotten herself lost in OHIO. I keep hoping to have one of the descendants from one of those other three lines show up on our newsgroup and have information on the parents of our JWL but so far, no luck. I know JWL was born in 1803 and married in Loudoun Co, VA (have his marriage record). There are two different (it appears) John W's in Loudoun Co in the huge VA tree that many of you are descended from, but they have no birth dates so I can't connect my JWL to either of those JWL's. There is a William and Mary Littleton in Loudoun Co, that had a son John W but I can't prove they are the same person. OK, there you have it, Thanks for reading it. Maybe someone will stumble on something that fits here and remember me. Now back to regular business - get out there and DIG. Thanks for subscribing to the newsgroup. It has been great getting to know and work with all of you. Let's hope it keeps growing and we all benefit from it this next year. Terry Littleton (listdad)

    1. Salt Lake City Files Going Online
    2. Hi all, I received this being the sponsor of this newsgroup. I though I'd pass it along to you, They are talking about the Salt Lake City files going online for everyone to use. Terry Littleton (listdad) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hello Fellow Researchers, I have been bombarded with questions on the Family Search Website and would like to pass on to you the information I received when I spoke to an "Official" Church spokesperson at Family Search. He advised me of the following: The OFFICIAL LDS Church website is LDS.ORG Go to media resources and find News update. The church is posting updates as they come in as to the state of the family search. Within 3 or 4 minutes of the NEWS UPDATE ANNOUNCING the FAMILY SEARCH is online. They will post it THERE! SO Keep checking. Should be a couple of days. It will be a MASSIVE SITE. They are prepared to test this site using anyone who wishes to go to it and use it. THERE WILL BE NO PASSWORD TO ACCESS IT. The rumor about the password was incorrect. When the site was put up it was restricted to a few....about 100 people who designed it and are putting the finishing touches on it, someone there LEAKED, YES LEAKED, (AN EMPLOYEE) and that is why some of you got in. When the masses bombarded the site it crashed 'cause it was not finished. They have now given each worker an INDIVIDUAL PASSWORD, SOOOOO IF it gets leaked again they will know who did it. It has been postponed being put online a few days because of the crash. There are now about 12 popular stories going around about Family Search. I ASSURE YOU MINE CAME FROM A CHURCH SPOKESMAN. IF you pass information about the site on to others please just send them this message I have sent you. The whole message. Now please remember this. 1. Go to LDS.org 2. Find Media Resources 3. Check News Updates That will inform you when it is going online. Please notify everyone you know who will be interested. I hope this helps you all. You have my permission to pass this note on to any Genealogy Lists you wish. Again, Please pass the whole note not just sections of it or we will have more rumors." Nº. 2: "The new web site (www.family-search.org) won't officially launch until mid-April. It is "on-live" now but only for official testers with assigned passwords. This according the Newspaper, Sat. edition. San Jose Mercury News.

    2. Hello all! One of our subscribers (Nancy Gates) sent me a wealth of LITTLETON info from back in the MD area. Some of it then goes to WV. Several of us have found quite a good bit of info in here. I wanted to pass it along to the list so everyone can look through it and maybe connect to something we don't. YOU NEVER KNOW. BUT PLEASE - Nancy has accumulated this data in the process of researching other surnames for her families. SHE does not have any more detail info other than what is listed here, so PLEASE don't contact her asking more about something you find on here. Sorry - but this is all she has. I thank her immensely, especially for typing it all in here for us to see, BUT I don't want everyone to drive her nuts. 1. YEAH - It's MONDAY
    2. Littleton, Terry
    3. Yea, right. HA HA Hope everyone had a good weekend. I just wanted to explain something to everyone. My e-mail address sometimes gets confusing. I HAVE TWO ADDRESSES. e-mail address at work is terryli@lee.k12.fl.us e-mail address at home is tlturbo@aol.com I have access to my AOL account from work BUT I don't have (and don't want to have) access to my work account from home. That's why if you write me here at work from late Friday afternoon (I leave at about 3:45) till Monday AM, I don't reply until I get back to work on Monday. I also have a problem with file transfers from work. We have a size limit on attachments to keep the server freed up. BUT I have no problem sending files from my AOL account. That's why sometimes you get stuff from me at the two different addresses. Hope this ends some confusion. Feel free to write me at either address, but remember I won't see stuff to this address over weekends or holidays. KEEP LOOKING OUT THERE By the way, we now have 83 subscribers. Terry Littleton (listdad)

    1. Interesting reading
    2. This was sent to my by Glenn Littleton in AL about some of the AL clan. Makes for interesting reading. I got his permission to pass it along. I thing these type of things add so much more depth to understanding the lifes of our ancestors. I have another to send later - Hope you enjoy. Terry Littleton (listdad) I had a few notes pertaining to John Littleton's father Lewis and his other Alabama son William Lewis Littleton. In Lewis Littleton's will (died March 17, 1922 ) , son John was listed as living in Palestine, Texas. Heirs were listed as Molly ( Mary Elizabeth) who was left his entire estate, and son W. L. Littleton (William Lewis). There is many accounts in court records pertaining to son William Lewis. He seemed to be a colorful character. I remember seeing court papers where he sued Alabama Power company once for a cow he claimed to have been killed by a company train during the construction of Lay Dam in the 1910's. He sued them again for the bad smell he said was the fault of Alabama Power Company when they started to impound the waters behind Lay Dam. His property was undoubtly close to the rising water which I gathered many people thought was detrimental to there health. William Lewis adopted a son named Carlee Harris. He changed his name to Forrest Littleton. I will finish this with to news clips from the The Clanton, Alabama newspaper of the time , the Union Banner. Union Banner 2-25-1937 "Lewis Littleton, aged 73 years, died last Friday afternoon (Feb. 19, 1937) at his home near Shaw's Mill in Beat 1. Burial was Saturday at Mullins-Jones Cemetery, services being conducted by Rev. J. P. Cost: Martin & Sons in charge. Survivers are a wife and one adopted son, Forrest Littleton." Union Banner 11-18-1937 "Forrest Littleton was killed by a black man,John Caver in a quarrel (Sunday 11-14-1937) by a shotgun blast to the heart. The quarrel was about somes calves being turned out. It happened at the old Lewis Littleton place above Lay Dam. Burial was at Mullins-Jones Cemetery. Survived by a wife and five children." Union Banner 3-10-1938 "John Caver - black man sentenced to 10 years , murderer of Forrest Littleton. 2nd. degree murder." "The case of Woodfin Littleton, held in the same connection was continued." "Forrest Littleton, abusive, indecent and obscene language: case abated at the death of the defendent." According to Chilton County Court records, Woodfin was arrested and charged with the murder of Forrest Littleton before the Caver man was charged. Woodfin was never tried for the murder. Woodfin was the brother of my grandfather,Vollie James Littleton. Forrest was listed as having several alias's in his criminal history. As far as I know Woodfin was never a scoundrel so I've always been curious how he became involved in this one.

    1. Re: Oops again
    2. Yeah, Terry, I was gonna give you a bad time about the "4th of November"...but you caught it before I had a chance to! In any case, we know that the Lytteltons who got caught up in Guy Fawkes' conspiracy were crypto-Catholics. I wonder how many our early 17th century ancestors fit that bill? Does anybody out there have any information on this curious aspect of the Littleton saga? Glad you enjoyed Elton John! Cheers, Scott C. 1. Loudoun marriage posts
    2. Littleton, Terry
    3. Hi all, In regards to the Littleton marriages in Loudoun Co, VA then Juanita posted. the first John W Littleton married to Elizabeth Ann Tavenner is my ggg gf, the one I'm desperately trying to find the parents of. The second John W Littleton marriage had to have been a different person because my John W died in Ohio in 1838. I would love to know this person's parents also. Charlotte Littleton is also a mystery, and since the witness was the unknown John W, I assume they were related. Unfortunately I don't know who she is either. If anyone is in, or has access to Loudoun wills, I'd love to see if there is one for a John W Littleton or a Charlotte Watkins. Terry Littleton (listdad)
