Terry and others: It looks as if a lot of Littleton information has been uncovered in the past year. That's great; however, I'm wondering if anything more has been found pertaining to the Hugh Littleton, born February 1, 1824, who married Elizabeth Plackard. I have been given a copy of the papers showing that his mother Sarah Littleton gave him up for indenture/adoption. But I still don't know who his father was. Does anyone? Was Sarah an unwed mother or a widow? Bud Caudle
Hi all, I thought I'd just write the list and let everyone know what we are working on, what has been acomplished, etc. As you know, Brian Berry took us a great leap forward with his manuscript this past summer. It provides a great basis for our research. Granted, there are a lot of holes, but we're working on them. John Littleton and his father Pherril are still a mystery as is the William Littleton who married Sarah Cottingham. Finding those two would tie together several huge lines. I'm still stuck on my ggg gf, John Wesley Littleton who went to OH from Loudoun Co, VA. Still can't find his parents. We have a lady in Onslow Co, NC who has discovered all of Tucker Reed Littletons research and is slowly piecing all that together. Since we know some of the MD and VA Littletons went to Onslow, this is a great find and should help tie a lot together. I have several lines I'm trying to link up, mainly a Florida group that came through GA from NC and VA, another group in Vermont, a new group from Baltimore, and several misc families. I also wanted to let the list know that my little mailing earlier this week worked pretty well. We have about 10 new subscribers and are closing in on 120 total. Cool!! Several of these new people have lines that need tracking back and I hope they post their lineage to the list so we can all dig in and help. WELCOME ABOARD. I also want to thank everyone who wrote me with nice compliments about our little newsgroup here, but I can't take any credit. LITTLETONs are just great people. I don't have any trouble with this list because of the people, not because of anything I do. (well there is Scott HA HA) Just teasing Scott, if you would stay home and quit running off to all those neat places I want to go, I wouldn't pick on you. Oh yeah - enjoy Maui this month. Also, Dr Harry Littleton in Birmingham called me last night and we had a great talk. He has stumbled across a few more tidbits on Pherril, Ferrill, whatever, that might help pin him down. He is going to make Pherril his project for this year. More on this as it developes. Scott Littleton is spending a month in England this summer and will be looking for our mysterious John who appeared in Accomack Co, VA in the mid 1600's and started the line that all or most of us come from. We know he is related to Col Nathaniel Littleton from back in England but so far don't know just how. Just a word of advice on research to the new members. You can find just about all you need to know on your ancestors from present back to the mid to late 1800's by looking for death certificates, birth records, obits, etc. If you are stuck with say your grandfather and know where he died or was born, start there. Start with what you have and work backwards. These records are available for every state, county and city in the US, a LOT on the internet. Learn to use the internet as it's a very valuable research tool. Also, every state and county has a web site and many have newsgroups just like this one where you can subscribe and ask questions and see if someone will look up stuff for you. It works real well. I just did it this week and someone looked up 6 death records for me in Baltimore. There are also newsgroups for various areas, cities, etc. Check out the ROOTSWEB web site for all the newsgroups that exist. And PLEASE feel free to ask questions, make comments, whatever on here. We're all here for one purpose. I know there are many on here that have never posted but that's OK, just feel free to post if you want. Everyone is very helpful. Well, enough of this babbling, back to research. I hope everyone had a GREAT Holiday season and New Year. Now get out there and DIG for info. Terry Littleton (listdad)
I just got this from one of the new subscribers that joined as a result of my mailing. I thought since we have a LOT of MD Littleton descendants on here, I'd pass the info on to the group in hopes someone might know this line. Does anyone have access to MD records and can check out these people? What county is Baltimore in? Terry (listdad) - ------------------------------------- Hi Terry, My Grandfather Louis Oregon Littleton was born in the late 1800's in Baltimore. My father Louis Andrew Littleton was born in the late 1920's in West Field Mass. I will put together our family history as I know it... Grandparents, Parents, Children, grandchildren and send it to you for your records. Thanks for your help Marc
Hi group, I got this in response to my mailing (along with several new LITTLETON members GREAT). Thought I'd pass this along just in case. How would you like to be one of these Littletons trying to find there ancestors and not knowing this? Now THAT would be a mess. I appreciate knowing this, might save someone a lot or research. Interesting question is WHY he changed it to LITTLETON?? Terry Littleton (listdad) - --------------------------------------------------- Our Littleton heritage only goes back 1 Generation. My husbands father changed his name to LITTLETON when he left NE as a young man (with the given name of Fred Burkey.) He had 2 sons, Richard Littleton and Virgil Lyle Littleton , both now deceased and a daughter, Geraldine (Littleton) Logan. So I really can't be of help to you.
Terry, Will ask her when I next speak to her. Hi Dorlyne I had a thought about Reuben and family. I show that Reuben had a possible brother named William. Mainly because there was a Reuben and a William both married in Williamson Co, TN 2 years apart and both a Reuben and a William served in the same War of 1812 unit. William was married to a McCandlis Ridge but I have no info on them. Have you tried checking in Williamson CO, TN to see if there are any Littletons descendants of him that might be of help? Also what about tracking forward on the descendants of Reuben? That's what I doing on my line right now. Trying to find living descendants of some of the siblings lines. Or even of the Littleton women that married. Let me know if you find anything. Terry Littleton (listdad)
Excuse me for posting again. The site was down for some reason, but tonight it is working fine. It's a very good site with genealogy poems, stories, etc. Bud
Hi Tandra! Welcome to the list. Pherril has prompted quite a bit of dialogue over the past few months. I've saved most of it, and will try to forward on to you. Hi, I wonder if anyone can be of help. My ancestor is Reuben Littleton b 1798 TN , m Hannah Ashman Willett b 1799 in NC. Children: Tatum b 1821 TN, Green b 1831 TN, Tennessee b 1834 TN, Reuben, Jr. b 1837 MS, m Lucie ?, and Francis Clark, b 1844 MS. I can go no further back in my lineage without the names of the parents of my Reuben. Terry Littleton has all of this info, but thought perhaps some of the members might be of help. Regards, Dorlyne (Littleton) Lyons
I'm new to the list so I'm not sure if this information has been asked for already. I'm looking for further information on John LITTLETON b. 1763 Loudoun Co., VA (?) d. Sept. 1836 Fleming Co., KY. He married Leanner Goddard and they had 12 children that I've found so far. My line goes through Reuben LITTLETON. I found some information a while back that John's father is Pherril (various spellings) LITTLETON b. in VA and Pherril's father is the Honorable John L. LITTLETON b. in England. But this information is sketchy. Does anyone have more information on this line? If anyone is interested in Reuben's siblings or decendants please contact me. I'm happy to share what I have. In 1829 the first Littleton Kerr was born.(that we know about). Andrew Littleton Kerr b 1829 in Chariton Co.,Missouri. His father was Dr.James A.Kerr b.abt 1810 in Va. Andrew Littleton Kerr's mother was Martha M.Bell of Ky. Her father,Col. John Bell fought in the war of 1812. Either Dr.James A.Kerr had a Littleton for a mother or else Martha M.Bell had a Littleton for a mother. Even now, the oldest Kerr son is given the middle-name Littleton. I would like very much to find out who we are honoring in this way. Does anyone recognize these people? Karen Kerr
