Hello Littleton Researchers! I have been reading quietly for the last few weeks. I have a Miss. Littleton who m. William Sutton Byrd around 1818 from the dates of birth of their children. She is recorded variously as Mary Littleton, Elizabeth Littleton, and Julia Elizabeth Littleton. I do not know where they married. William Sutton Byrd was the son of George Byrd and was born in Sumter District, S.C. the Byrds moved through Ga. to Ala. to Miss. They were in Jackson Co., Miss. in 1813. So they may have married in Miss. William Sutton is in Perry Co. Miss. in 1830 and in Jackson Co. Miss. by 1840. Do any of you with southern Littleton lines know anything about this family? I would appreciate any help. Thanks! Sherry Wilson Manuel

As evidence that LITTLETON is an old name in England, I found this property on the list of historic properties in Great Britian, compiled by the British Tourist Authority. Perhaps this will be of use to someone, and is certainly of interest to anyone researching the Littleton name. Middle Littleton Tithe Barn: Near Evesham, Hereford & Worcester. Little Town, located in the Lake District of northern England is an example of this usage. Since a little town would have existed before larger communities, those with the Littleton name can claim that their family is older than others with names such as Granville, or Longville. Last week while visiting The Hermitage, home of Andrew Jackson, we visited the Hermitage Confederate Cemetery, on the grounds of the church andrew had built for Rachel Donelson Jackson at Tulip Grove Farm. My husband, who is the tombstone detective of the family found the following: Stone #272 Dr. R.S. LITTLETON 1832-1913. ALA. SUR. Dr. Littleton died in the Tennessee Home for Confederate Soldiers in Nashville. There are about 300 graves, each marked with a small upright stone. Marketta from Madera.

Sorry, I did not explain myself on the State and Date. I have some Profiles just listing names and not what area they came from and no time period, and some with the county but no state. From the posting I have read on the Littleton Letter the names are repeated over and over in different states. eg: Southy Littleton I have seen listed in VA MD and NC. OK, what does everyone think about adding the state of birth and appx date behind the most recent and the oldest LITTLETON surname ancestor? Would that help? What if you don't know? In my case I know where and when my father and ggg gf were born, but what about those that don't know? Terry Littleton (listdad)
To the Littleton group The Profiles are arriving. But I think it would help if the state and maybe a date could be included...............Nancy ******************************************************************* Researching: Weekley, Braman, Littleton, Jarrett/Jarard, Buchanan, Higgins, Tennant, O'Neil Barnhouse, Enoch, Pribble

Thanks to Nancy Gates in West Virginia, we have a volunteer to collect and compile the member profiles for our index project. I will send her a list of all e-mail addresses so she can mark them off as they come in. REMEMBER, this isn't required. IF you want to participate, that's great, but you don't have to. Please send your profile to Nancy at NEGates@prodigy.net I will put my profile here as an example. No one suggested any modifications to the layout I proposed, so for now, we'll use it. Your name and e-mail addresses Your closest LITTLETON surname relative and relationship The oldest LITTLETON surname ancestor you are sure about and relationship Comment about your search. OK, this should get us started. PLEASE, PLEASE follow the above format so Nancy doesn't have to do editing to your entry. I will try to get instructions on this added to the 'new subscriber' welcome e-mail also. If anyone has any ideas or comments, please contact me. Terry Littleton - listdad
Hi, I like Terry's idea for a Littleton directory. I can't be the one to collect the listings this month. I could later if no one else volunteers. I get the feeling there are very few of us "Southern (Southey) Littletons," and I want to know who we are. Ann Melugin Williams
Hi Terry, An excellent idea! Am too swamped at the moment to be the point person here, but I do hope that some member of the Littleton clan will be able to take on the job. Hello all, I thought I'd post this to the group as I had one request to do this already, and since I live in FL, I see this 'Winter migration' each year and thought some others of you might be doing the same thing. If you are heading south for the winter, and will be changing internet providers, thus getting a new e-mail address, you need to unsubscribe the old address and subscribe the new one. Just do it again when you go back home. This actually applies anytime you change e-mail addresses. PLEASE, unsubscribe the old one, or I get kick back messages and then have to check what's happening. Several times I just had to delete the original address and hope I didn't inadvertently remove someone. You subscribe and unsubscribe just like you did when you joined the newsgroup. Send e-mail to LITTLETON-L-request@rootsweb.com with just the one word - subscribe or unsubscribe - in the body. If you're on digest mode, send it to LITTLETON-D-request@rootsweb.com. I hope everyone has had a good summer. The weather is starting to cool off a bit here in SW FL and the rainy season has stopped. Hurricane Georges gave us a scare going by offshore about 100 miles, but hey, that's FL. My current project since I'm at a dead end trying to connect my ggg gf back to his parents in Loudoun Co, VA, is working on making the America to England connection on some of our oldest ancestors here in the 'colonies'. I believe the only connection we have so far is that of Col Nathaniel Littleton back to his English line. I'd bet money that these other early settlers of NC, SC, VA, MD, etc, are cousins and uncles of his. I was just given the address (snail not e-mail arggghhhh) of a Littleton researcher named Trevor T Littleton in England. I dropped him a letter yesterday and hope to establish a dialog with him so we have a source for some research over there. Since we have over 50 subscribers now, and I know many of you don't know the others, but might want to contact a new cousin in your same line, I was trying to think of a way to get some kind of an index together that would show our names, e-mail addresses, and somehow, the Littleton line we belong to. Does anyone have any suggestions, and would anyone be willing to collect this information via their e-mail from our subscribers and put it in some handy-dandy layout? I was thinking of a format like: Subscribers name - e-mail address Most recent Littleton surname ancestor and location (city, state) Oldest Littleton surname ancestor you know about and location (city, state) One line of free text of your choosing, like : 'I think my ggg gf is son of William & Mary Littleton in the VA group but can't prove it.' If everyone would compose it EXACTLY this way (or however we decide), and send it to whoever volunteers to collect it, they could just cut and paste it into a document that could be sent out periodically. I could also put instructions on doing this in the 'Welcome Aboard' message that goes to each new subscriber. I also could provide the volunteer a list of all the subscribers e-mail addresses as a checkoff list. Are y'all (that's FL talk) interested in something like this? It wouldn't be required so if you want your privacy, that's OK. Post ideas to the list so we can all see them. Guess that's about all for now - take care and good hunting. Willi September 28, 1998 SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (September 28, 1998) -- Millions of family records dating back more than 450 years are being made available to the public today in two CD-ROM packages by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the world's foremost authority on genealogy. The North American Vital Records Index and the British Isles Vital Records Index contain church, civil and parish records from the United States, Canada and the countries of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. "These new CDs may save families hundreds of hours of time and painstaking research," said Elder D. Todd Christofferson, executive director of the Church's Family History Department. "The process is as simple as typing in a name. But this is only the beginning of what's to come. The Church is aggressively working toward developing other products that will simplify genealogical research, making it faster and easier to access needed information and trace family histories." The North American Vital Records Index lists nearly five million names taken from church and civil records and from other collections in the United States and Canada. The items in this seven-CD set focus on marriage records (6 discs) and also list some births and christenings (1 disc). The North American records indexed date from 1620 to1888. The index will be updated periodically as more information becomes available, adding millions of new names with each future volume. The British Vital Records Index contains nearly five million names from parish registers, civil registrations and other record collections in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. The records on the index span more than three centuries, from 1538 to 1888. The five CDs in this set concentrate on birth and christening records (4 discs) and also list some marriages (1 disc). The amount of accessible data can vary greatly from parish to parish. This vital records index will be an ongoing project which will also be updated periodically. "Nearly half of American families can trace part of their lineage to the British Isles," Christofferson said. "Our repository of records is the most comprehensive source available to help these families trace their roots, not just to ancestors who arrived in America, but to their forebears in 16th century England." Genealogy is the third-most-popular hobby in the U.S. and the second-most-popular topic on the Internet. According to a Maritz Marketing Research study conducted for American Demographics Magazine, approximately 19 million people actively trace their lineage. Since 1978, thousands of Latter-day Saint volunteers and others have spent millions of hours carefully reading and examining microfilmed records. The volunteers "extract" from these original records the most necessary and useful information, such as names, dates, places, and family relationships. The resulting data is then indexed, and in the case of the vital record indexes, automated into valuable resource files that improve ease of access and save time for family history devotees. The Family History Department expects to begin releasing the 1880 U.S. Census and the 1881 British Census in early 1999. This collection will total more than 80 million names. Three other new software products were introduced in April of this year. They include: 1. Family History SourceGuide - an automated research guide, developed by the experts at the world-famous Family History Library. 2. The 1851 British Census - an index to census records of Devon, Norfolk, and Warwick co. 3. The Australian Vital Records Index (1788-1905) - an index to records from New South Wales, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia. The Family History Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the world leader in genealogical work, with more than 3,200 family history centers worldwide and the world's largest collection of family history records, housed in Salt Lake City, Utah. I would appreciate information about MARGARET ANN LITTLETON, married to JOSEPH GREEN FORD. They were married on 16 Oct, 1839 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co, NC. She was born 20 Feb, 1817 in Charlotte and died 28 April, 1879 in Dongola, Union Co, IL. Her father was ARNOLD LITTLETON, but I don't know more than that about him. I know nothing about her mother. Margaret and Joseph had 12 children. Any help that anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated. Allison

I am researching the genealogy of Hugh Littleton who was born in Clermont County, Ohio and died (1901) in Loraine, Adams, Illinois. I received some information from the State Historical Society of Wisconsin about the Civil War records for both Hugh Littleton and and his son Francis (Frank). When Hugh enlisted October 30, 1861 he states his age as 41 years old. That would mean he was born in 1820 which is inconsistent with both his tombstone (1825) and and indenture letter (1824) of which I have a copy. Both Hugh and Frances were in Company D, 18 Regt, Wisc Inf. Hugh was a Corporal. It looks like they had action at Shiloh, Corinth, Chattanooga, Allatoona and Kinston (N.C.) Since Frances was born in Clermont County, Ohio it is likely that Hugh was both born and married in that County. I would appreciate any information that might help me link Hugh to either his wife or parents. Cal Brostrom brostrom@us.ibm.com
