Diana, My job requires the use of Gmail. I sometimes use the web interface for Gmail, and when I do, it is easy to include a whole lot of backquotes without realizing it. When you start a reply that would otherwise include backquotes, there is a little "..." shown. You have to click on that series of dots to display the backquotes. If you don't ever display them, you can't delete them because you probably don't realize they are even there.
