    1. [LO] Question about Spam E-mail from "rootsweb"
    2. I know now from previous posts to NOT forward a suspicious spam e-mail to the list. In today's mail I received an e-mail: FROM: support@rootsweb.com RE: Wire Transfer Confirmation (FED 96091RT455) This is the first one received seemingly from "rootsweb." To me this seems to be an obvious spam message. It seems like lately a lot of spam type messages have be coming via my AOL [especially] mail account. They are often some type of "confirmation" type subject for an order, subscription, delivery notice ostensibly from UPS, etc. I have been deleting a lot of these. Has anyone else noticed these in their messages in general or are there just more not being caught by AOL? I have also received a good many similar, obvious spam messages to my rootsweb list that I just delete. They are obviously not 'subscribe' mails or genealogy posts - it seems like a lot of them coming to my one small list. Often they are similar to the above message line. What I can do & I think safely do is post the 'message source' information. I did not want to do that before asking though. Would that information be helpful to know why this e-mail came through? I would appreciate any helpful responses to this request. As a newbie list owner I had some hesitation about posting this from reading some other responses that really slam posters for their 'ignorance.' I admit to not knowing that much yet but I am trying to 'lurk & learn.' To bed now, I'll check my mail tomorrow. Thank you, Linda Jowers NCScots list

    3. Linda, You're definitely not the only admin to be receiving such e-mails at your personal address. Norton Antivirus has stripped out the attachments from any that come to my address with an attachment, so please don't try to open any that you get. What tends to happen is that the spammers send e-mail to list addresses (which gets caught in pending requests) as well as to the -admin address for the same lists. It is usually the mail addressed to the -admin address that is being sent on directly to the list admins. Rootsweb does not filter this mail in any way. It would be really great if they did, but they don't. Your -admin address was most likely either in the "To", "CC" or "BCC" lines of the spam e-mail you are receiving. Just delete and ignore it. Pay attention to any instructions from Joan Young on how to handle it with your aol account; those accounts have special rules in place regarding mail deleted from spam folders or reported as spam. -- Mary On 4/13/2012 1:17 AM, jowerslh@aol.com wrote: > I know now from previous posts to NOT forward a suspicious spam e-mail to the list. 1. [LO] off topic - new list for 1940 Census topic
    2. Courtney
    3. Hi all, I noticed my lists are getting a lot of off topic questions about the 1940 census, so asked rootsweb for a 1940 census list. "Pig" has given me permission to post it here, so those who want to can share it with their lists if they feel like "the 1940 census is taking over your list and you'd rather it didn't..." or if you would just like to tell your other subscribers about it. The name of the list is USCENSUS1940 as usual, subscribe to: USCENSUS1940-request@rootsweb.com post messages to: USCENSUS1940@rootsweb.com List info page: http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/Census-US/USCENSUS1940.html Thanks for reading, Courtney sitnah@cox.net

    3. Hi Linda, Rootsweb would not be sending you email about a wire transfer, unless you had made arrangements with them - and therefore had prior knowledge. With that in mind, knowing that you had no such contact with Rootsweb, you know that the email you received absolutely HAS to be spam, without even opening it. The address has been spoofed, it is not from Rootsweb at all. All you should do is delete it and move on. The part you should not share on the list is the link they want you to click on. Hope this helps. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy jowerslh@aol.com said the following on 13/04/2012 5:17 p.m.: > I know now from previous posts to NOT forward a suspicious spam e-mail to the list.
