I believe that you would only see a hyphen in that position (immediately before “@”) if it is followed by the word “request” which is used when you subscribe, or unsubscribe, to a Rootsweb mailing list. Aside I believe under the previous mail system you could have -L@ or -D@ GACARROL-L@rootsweb.com GAHARALS-L@rootsweb.com This was still working a while ago.
A hyphen isn't that unusual.
