It is _Java_in_browsers_ that _may_ be the problem. You can turn off Java in your browser to eliminate the security threat. But, Java is _needed_ for many other programs. As for something vulnerable on your machine, the most vulnerable thing is the connection to the Internet. While there are firewalls, and other Internet protection programs, absolutely nothing is more secure that disconnecting the computer from the Internet.
