    1. [LO] Link for list archives is a little odd?
    2. Keith Meintjes
    3. I notice that the link to "browse or search the archives" for my list is: https://lists.rootsweb.com/hyperkitty/list/south-africa.rootsweb.com/2018/10/ Yes, the year and month is embedded in the link. I checked this by going to .../2018/09, and, yes, it goes to September 2018. So, if I bookmark the current link, it will be out of date next month? If that is true, in a couple of years my link will take me to messages that are two years old. I would expect the link to not change, and to always take me to the most recent messages, with messages sorted newest to oldest. As I said, I think this is an odd way to do it. (You're probably thinking, "Here's a man with too much time on his hands." Keith -- +1.248.891.6434 Michigan, USA (Eastern Time)

    3. You understand correctly. If you want the link to the most recent archives it is: https://lists.rootsweb.com/hyperkitty/list/south-africa@rootsweb.com/ You can see that link under "the archives" on this page: https://lists.rootsweb.com/postorius/lists/south-africa.rootsweb.com/ Mike On 10/21/2018 6:23 PM, Keith Meintjes wrote: > I notice that the link to "browse or search the archives" for my list is: > > https://lists.rootsweb.com/hyperkitty/list/south-africa.rootsweb.com/2018/10/ > > Yes, the year and month is embedded in the link. 3. I went to this link: https://lists.rootsweb.com/hyperkitty/list/south-africa.rootsweb.com/2018/10/ and by default, it takes you to the current month and year, but if you look over to your left, you have the option to choose an earlier month and/or year. 3. P.S. And, yes, some of the dates are absurd. Perhaps this can be fixed if you complain. > -----Original Message----- > From: Keith Meintjes [mailto:kmeintjes@gmail.com] > Sent: Sunday, October 21, 2018 7:23 PM > To: Listowners list for Rootsweb list admins and moderators > Subject: [LO] Link for list archives is a little odd? > > I notice that the link to "browse or search the archives" for my list is: > > https://lists.rootsweb.com/hyperkitty/list/south-africa.rootsweb.com/2018/10/ > > Yes, the year and month is embedded in the link. 3. P.P.S. Good grief, I'll get this right, yet. I went to this link: https://lists.rootsweb.com/hyperkitty/list/south-africa.rootsweb.com/ and it automatically changed to this link: https://lists.rootsweb.com/hyperkitty/list/south-africa.rootsweb.com/2018/10/ which is what took me to the current month and year. 3. Thank you, I understand what is going on. Strip out the date 2018/10/ <https://lists.rootsweb.com/hyperkitty/list/south-africa.rootsweb.com/2018/10/> and you have a link that will always go to current messages. I think. 3. Yes, that's what it looks like is happening. Now, you only have the problem of the screwed up years in the archive... > -----Original Message----- > From: Keith Meintjes [mailto:kmeintjes@gmail.com] > Sent: Sunday, October 21, 2018 8:20 PM > To: Listowners list for Rootsweb list admins and moderators > Subject: [LO] Re: Link for list archives is a little odd? > > Thank you, I understand what is going on. > > Strip out the date 2018/10/ > > <https://lists.rootsweb.com/hyperkitty/list/south- > africa.rootsweb.com/2018/10/> > > and > you have a link that will always go to current messages. 3. That date problem was once described on this list as being due to something like this: If the computer of the person who is posting thinks it is Feb 7, 2067, then that year and month is used to create the date links in the archives. Interestingly, the person who made the post can delete the post from the archives, but the list admin cannot.  If I remember right many on the list thought that was the way it should be. If all the posts in a year-month link are deleted I don't know if that gets rid of the faulty year-month link. 3. There used to be a link where you could go to delete your own posts, and where you could recommend someone else's post be deleted. The person whose message it was would get a notice suggesting it be deleted. If they failed to do so, RootsWeb staff used to check these unfinished requests and make the deletion. It was really handy for tidying up the list archive, not just to remove spam or objectionable messages, but to remove things like people asking the admin to change their email address or other stuff that shouldn't have been sent to the list. That link died some time ago. Anyone know if the feature is still available? > -----Original Message----- > From: Mike Flannigan [mailto:mikeflan@att.net] > Sent: Sunday, October 21, 2018 9:32 PM > To: listowners@rootsweb.com > Subject: [LO] Re: Link for list archives is a little odd? > > > That date problem was once described on this list > as being due to something like this: > > If the computer of the person who is posting > thinks it is Feb 7, 2067, then that year and > month is used to create the date links in the > archives. > > Interestingly, the person who made the post can > delete the post from the archives, but the > list admin cannot.
