    3. Well, until a few minutes ago I was going to tell you that all RW lists are 100% dead.  I posted a message to MORipley.  It went to 174 subscribers. I asked for a reply and asked the subscriber to put the e-mail extension in the post.  Only one person responded. He tried to respond to the list, but got the error below.  So he sent me a private e-mail. So my tests so far suggest that very few people are getting posts from the RW lists.  Some of those people cannot successfully post to the list. So I suspect very few people will get this post I am making right now.  If people don't go to the archives to read what was posted, they never see it. Therefore I put a bunch of people in the cc: field of this e-mail. Eris Wilson is also copied to this e-mail. From subscriber Eric Wilson whose e-mail extension is @wilson.cx. Mike, I tried to respond to your request for posts. It was rejected via the error below. The DMARC policy tries to determine whether an email is SPAM or not My email domain is wilson.cx <http://wilson.cx>, but it is hosted at Google. I have both domain and hosting DMARC certificates configured so I think the rootsweb DMARC policy is incorrectly configured. Cheers, E! Today and Rootsweb <https://lists.rootsweb.com/hyperkitty/list/listowners.rootsweb.com/thread/27867242/> by Pat Connors I now have two accounts that I use for only Rootsweb posts, Google, Outlook and I have my 20 year old ATT account.   This morning no mail on any of them from the many lists I am a member, owner or both.  Is the system down or dead?  Is it dead because so many of us get no longer Rootsweb mail??  If I was a conspirator, I might think this is an Ancestor plan.  Must be expensive to carry Rootsweb. -- Pat Connors http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

    3. Nivard, RootsWeb is being blocked at a minimum by AT&T (and all of their domains) and Earthlink (and all of their domains) because the RW servers are compromised by malware and sending spam. I have an Earthlink account, and this information was confirmed by my Earthlink Tech Support. RW needs to talk to the blockers and resolve this "technician to technician," but when I informed Anne she said they may not fix all of the blocks other than just AT&T but not the smaller domains so I don't know what is going on there anymore. In the meantime, I get NO list mail whatsoever, nor do an awful lot of other people. That sure looks like "dead lists" to me. You can write to Anne if you want to, but I have given up on doing that any more. In the meantime, I now also sub to LO with an old rarely used Gmail address so I can keep getting mail from this list. David E. Do you understand that one of the first things ISPs look at when evaluating a sender as a sp*mmer is volume, not content? When RootsWeb started bringing user web sites back on line, the volume on the Freepages and RootsWeb help lists jumped from four or five posts a week to 50 or more per day, as people wanted to discover how to get their site back on line, and how to gain access to it. And since the on line file manager was discontinued, many people then had questions about how they could edit their pages, and how to upload their changes. They had to learn about file transfer protocols and a bunch of other things. The Freepages list is still getting a dozen or more posts per day. Several ISPs flagged the domain because of volume, and then started checking DMARC and DKIM authentication. Over several weeks, I spent hours on the phone with AT&T and they swore to me they were not blocking mail from rootsweb.com even though it was obvious that they were. They finally admitted it to Anne's people and I am sure the tech people will get it figured out eventually. Pat A.

    3. Yes, no question about it. It is hard to deny it when my provider showed them (2 of them) to me online. Both were known international spammers compromising the Ancestry & Amazon servers that currently house the RW lists. I wouldn't be surprised if the AT&T blockage is due to the same thing, but I have no information on that one, although I have to wonder how many other list subscribers are blocked as well that nobody knows about. 3. Malware definition: software that is intended to damage or disable computers and computer systems. For more, see <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malware> Malware and sp*m are two different things. While sp*m may be used to attempt to deliver malware, all sp*m does not include malware. "International sp*mmers" compromising Ancestry servers? Give me a break. How in the world would they manage that? Even assuming they sent sp*m including a link to malware to a RootsWeb list, it would not affect the server since the server cannot "click" the link. Could an inexperienced list administrator approve an inappropriate subscriber or post? Certainly. How often does it happen? Does once in a blue moon sound about right? And even if it happened once or even twice, that does not mean the servers are "compromised." It means a new, inexperienced, or careless list admin made a mistake and exposed the list subscribers -- but not the server. You are being sold a bill of goods by your provider. Pat A. 3. It is NOT malware !!! RW / Ancestry needs to do one thing - end the bloody relationship with the infidel ProofPoint.com right now! Those ISPs are treating ProofPoint as malware because of the way the links come out. My ISP is not blocking at all. On 10/17/2018 9:47 AM, David E. David, while I hate the corrupted ProofPoint URLs as much as you obviously do, from the headers I have seen, most ISPs treat them as a Soft Fail. Unfortunately, there is a Hard Fail for DKIM, and that is probably the tipping point. Ancestry/RootsWeb needs to work with whatever gurus they use/consult to provide DKIM authentication for list mail (which is not particularly easy). Pat A.

    3. Pat, Define it any way you want to, but there is still something in there that needs to be removed then several providers lift the blockage sometime before I die of old age. In 20 years as a list admin/listowner I have seen this happen too many times (though not always with Earthlink), and I am getting VERY tired of seeing "the same script with different details" so often. ☹ David E. In my experiment, 5 of 174 subscribers on the MORipley list replied.  Of the people who replied, 2 had AOL accounts; 1 had Gmail; 1 had wilson.cx; and one had a charter.net e-mail account.  One of the 5 could not post to the list due to a DMARC policy issue.  Below are all the e-mail extensions on the MORipley list and the number of subscribers who have that e-mail extension.
