One of my subscribers mailed me earlier to ask the correct address to post to the list So rather than just hand over the address I prefer to try and teach them how to find it themselves (and all the other lists) I would normally have sent them to the lists home page, at the same time letting them know how to find that page ie as it used to be, Mailing lists from the top bar menu from Rootsweb home page, search for a list in the lower search box and follow your nose to the list in question That home page had the addresses to use for contacting admin, posting to the list and the correct address for subscribing & unsubscribing So I got up the find a mailing list search page (as the menu is *still* missing from the Rootsweb home page) But on drilling down to the home page for that list I find the very thing I am trying to point out to her is *missing* now On each lists home page is the admin address and the subscribing & unsubscribing address But no "to post to this list" address -- Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK)
Another interesting development. As well as not showing the Admin Center link on the boards, IE does not show the menu header on the rootsweb home page. It does show up on Chrome. Gene, If you mean on this site - http://home.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ - I don't have the menu header (where it says mailing lists, boards, web pages) in Chrome. :) Perhaps your Chrome is using a cached version? Since you want people to find things. Here is an exercise for you. Any search engine... Type just Rootsweb You will get plenty of hits. Might find a few unlisted things you can't find on rw yet? Read all the hits. Give the member his answer without the redirect. Thats the point. Some one ask a simple question. Give the simple answer. Your comment about sending a member on a goose chase rather than give the simple answer.. If you were having a burger bbq, and some one ask for a burger, you going to send them to the butcher shop to find the source of the beef you have handy? Just give simple answers. Clicking "Mailing Lists" on the main Rootsweb page sends you to: https://mailinglists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/listindexes/ Searching that page for McBee (my very first list) I'm sent to https://mailinglists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/listindexes/search/MCBEE And you are right, that page doesn't say to send email to "[email protected]". However, I'm reasonably sure that the welcome message says that. And those who are already subscribed can just look at a list post! Yes if already subscribed you would think that the person would know or have the address saved However not all subscribers are tech savvy and on more than several occasions I have been asked what is the correct address to use to post to a list, some get confused by the "request" or "admin" addresses that were, so I always found it better to show them where to look for the right address, which would help them for all lists I am pleased to report that at least the top bar menu is back on the Rootsweb home page (at least for now ;-) Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 19-Apr-18 8:33 AM, Valorie Zimmerman wrote: > Clicking "Mailing Lists" on the main Rootsweb page sends you to: > https://mailinglists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/listindexes/ > > Searching that page for McBee (my very first list) I'm sent to > https://mailinglists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/listindexes/search/MCBEE > > And you are right, that page doesn't say to send email to > "[email protected]". I just did a test subscribe to a list The welcome message, although long and detailed did not have the address to post to So I did a test subscribe from a different email address to one of mine, and got a truncated message with no address to send to either Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) >> And you are right, that page doesn't say to send email to >> "[email protected]". I don't think I ever seen the home page without a menu. Why are you so concerned about it? The only link that goes anywhere is the Mailing Lists link. I am concerned about it as it was the place to send people to find the lists & boards And search the archived posts And various other things like password central, help etc etc most of which have disappeared If people can't find the lists at least, how are they going to subscribe ? The only place I get the menu is when logged in, not much use if potential subscribers aren't registered with Rootsweb I might have thought it a problem with my computer, or browser however its the same on other computers and on different browsers The fact is it should be there Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 19-Apr-18 1:51 PM, Gene Phillips wrote: > I don't think I ever seen the home page without a menu. > > Why are you so concerned about it? Nivard, I have also experienced the missing tool bar which appears and disappeared, then reappears. It is frustrating. It seems that both www.rootsweb.com and home.rootweb.com should both have the heading for navigation of the site.
