The Settings page requests five parameters for a particular list, i.e. Show list on index page - yes/no DESCRIPTION - x x x Information - x x x Display name - the name of the list, e.g. ROOTSWEB-HELP Subject Prefix - the Subject prefix for posts to the list, e.g. [ROOTSWEB-HELP] Where and when does the DESCRIPTION parameter appear, and/or affect postings. I ask because the Rootsweb-Help mailing list (which I admin) is receiving questions from other listowners relative to adminning their lists, whereas the RootsWeb-Help list is about help with web sites hosted by Rootsweb on the WWW and Homepages servers. I have updated the Information box for this list in settings, and referred posters to the LISTOWNERS list; but I am at a loss as to what to put in the DESCRIPTION box. What if any effect does this box have on anything? Pat A.
The next time the lists are re-indexed it will show on the directory page. Just curious. On the banned list do we still need the carrot before the addresses? Dan
It is my understanding that we have always supposed to have prefaced our entry with that mark all along, but it has never been very clearly stated. Mailman actually said to do it, but that was the only time I recall seeing it stated in 20 years of managing lists. I'd kind of like to know myself, if anyone really KNOWS without guessing. David E. Would be nice if it was part of the little sentence on the banned list page. Some one could edit that being on mind maybe? Would help everyone. Maybe we had mailman 20 years but we had that last up grade last year everyone was frustrated with also. And in newer versions things change. Nice to have those directly on the admins pages? Dan & David, That caret is simply a regular expression marker; it means the match starts at the beginning of the character string. I'm guessing it's optional in this particular case. -- Mary On 4/16/18 7:43 PM, David E. You do not need the ^ symbol on the banned list. Works the same with or without it. Core 3 architecture page Quote. When a message is first received for posting to a mailing list, Mailman processes the message to determine whether the message is appropriate for the mailing list. If so, it *accepts* the message and it gets posted. Mailman can *discard* the message so that no further processing occurs. Mailman can also *reject* the message, bouncing it back to the original sender, usually with some indication of why the message was rejected. Or, Mailman can *hold* the message for moderator approval." " ( Some indication of why the message was rejected) List admin need good tools not excuses. I read all about mailman and how it should work. Also the problems adding to the old one. No one is blaming anyone. We just want to get clearified what works. Maybe it shows up here? http://home.rootsweb.ancestry.com/listindexes/ Like before when we used the index. The ladies in the beginning of 1998 Era who wrote in our name varients and was it Larry? Not sure about the name did list description for us. We never had to do those things b4. But times change. I ask the same question where does the part Pat mentioned show up?
