I've been the list owner of the INMONROE for the past 11 years and never knew there was a ban list. Now the new director of the Monroe County History Center wants to subscribe to the list, but all of our combined efforts have failed. Finally I asked the help desk and was advised that the director's e-mail address was on the ban list. And sure enough, it is there, but I can't seem to delete it. I highlight the name, click to delete it, and click on "Submit Your Changes." This brings up a screen that starts with the big word "Error" in red and then all the names on the ban list in black. When I try to search for the e-mail address on this page, the page switches back to the opening page for the Ban List. What in the world am I doing wrong?? Randi

Right on, Joan. I have had it go to spam on its own and have rescued it so I wouldn't be reporting it as spam. Maybe I will ignore it from now on IF it ever goes to spam again in my lifetime. Hi Joan, Having thought long on this, I don't think there is anything Rootsweb can do because AVG, Windows and Google let this porn picture come through as well. I think the only solution that can work is for the admin to have an e-mail addy published on the general Information page, so that mail comes directly to the admin without Rootsweb being involved. That way we can mark the spam and porn as spam to our own e-mail service. Google is very good then to redirect it to the spam box after just a few messages. In this case, Rootsweb appears to hinder dealing with spam to admin. We need to get Rootsweb out of the way so we can deal with it.. Lee- Not really. I have a RootsWeb address and mail to it and forwarded to me at AOL never is filtered in any way. I'd guess if you see filtering in YOUR admin mail it is taking place on your end...not RootsWeb's. Joan In a message dated 3/17/2012 1:57:52 P.M. Janet- My guess is they come through because the spam comes to you at an official (admin) RootsWeb address and you likely have the address on an approved list of some sort which lets it come through. I've had admin mail come to my spam folder at times (it varies) and admin mail can be deleted directly from the spam folder because it isn't LIST mail that would get reported to RootsWeb to get you unsubbed for reporting it for spam. I doubt there is enough of it to cause any blockages of RootsWeb either. Mind you I don't SEND this spam to my spam folder if it comes to my inbox...I just delete it. But if it is DIRECTED to spam I let it delete from there. Joan In a message dated 3/17/2012 1:12:34 P.M. Remember that you are not picking up admin mail at some admin address - the admin address is *forwarding* to whatever email address you have provided to mailman. Therefore, whatever filtering you choose to use (or your ISP chooses to use) at that address will apply equally to any mail which comes to you as admin. --pig

Patrice- I can't answer that...I think you would have to ask the staff on the HelpDesk. I know that even the RootsWeb staff email addresses get spam like that -- so there is no apparent filtering done other than for mail directed to the lists -- filtered by the list software. Joan, I know we can't change that here, but is it something that should be changed? Why should admins get stuff that even RootsWeb doesn't want? It could also be a safety issue. Well, This was new. I got an e-mail in through my admin mail that had a picture embedded in it. Not an attachment, but an embed that Rootsweb's computer did not strip away or stop. How does this happen please? When I opened the e-mail, the picture was there already. It was not a nice picture. It was porn. Anyone else get anything like this? Do I have to stop getting my admin mail altogether? Janet
Admin mail is never stripped...be careful. If it is looks like spam from the subject or sender--just delete and do NOT open. Joan In a message dated 3/16/2012 6:55:00 P.M. Folks, let me note a couple of points, then return you to hunting down all the clocks in the house (if you're in the US) that need set forward.... While we are all list admins here, we are *not* all admins of *this* list. If you feel the need to snark at a fellow poster based on what he or she has posted to the list, take it off list. It is *never* appropriate for a subscriber to this list to call out another subscriber *on the list* over what or how they have posted. You can take it up with the list admin (off list); you can take it up with the poster (off list). I'd hope you'd do it politely, but I realize that's a target only some folks will bother to aim at. Either way, it is not polite, helpful to the offender, or productive for the other people on the list for you to publicly chastise the person who has offended your sense of propriety. Thanks! --pig, admin
