It could be a WorldGenWeb list. Is it listed under WorldGenWeb when you go to the browse mail lists page? If not, it could the the admin is connected to WorldGenWeb, has had the list forever, and just assumes the two go together. It has been known to happen. If the listadmin is found to prevent, restrict anyone from outside listadmin's project, the list can be taken away, once the complaint is filed and investigated by RW. The policy has already established for years governing the lists having NO variations of genweb in the mailing list names. If the list IS a project list then those in charge of the project can control the content. I have never heard that projects are no longer being given lists if requested. The only thing I recall hearing is that if the lists become adoptable they can only be adopted out to those connected to the project. Joan In a message dated 4/25/2012 5:35:06 P.M. That was old rule way back before 2002, before RW was acquired by Ancestry.com Now it is not adoptable by any project unless the list has the specific name "genweb" or any variation of that word in the mailing list name. ORBaker is not adoptable by any project and not restricted. Must be open to all projects. ORGenWeb is restricted to that project. RW policy - no more project county lists under any circumstances, too much problems already as it was back then. Hi All, I haven't commented here in a long time, but in looking at the RootsWeb entry page for requesting a list I see I can request: ) Surnames ) Localities (Counties only) ) Miscellaneous They want you to input the requested list name and a description of it. This looks very much like Message Boards that allow: ) Surnames ) Localities ) Topics So please explain and differentiate the words Miscellaneous, Topics, and Projects. Looking at Topics on Message boards there are tons. I'm just trying to figure out what a project is and why you can't get permission to create a list for it. Is it that "project" implies something that "topics" doesn't? Who cares? If someone wants to create a list to share ideas that is somehow related to Genealogy why would someone else want to prevent their sharing? How about this project: Restoration of Old Stone Fort Historical Museum and the expansion of research materials about the period 1840-1900 including information about the people who lived there. What parts would not be allowed? The funding and reconstruction of a building? What if this mentioned who were the movers in shakers of getting the funding or doing the construction work. RW or Ancestry would have no idea about the depth of information or whether it will actually connect to genealogy until after the list goes into use. If the above project list were allowed, and I don't understand why not, then wouldn't it just be up to the facilitator to decide if posts were or were not on topic? If I had the project and you wanted to list new books about Texas that have been acquired at a library in California, I'd say this request to list your books is off topic because it has nothing to do with Old Stone Fort or the Nacogdoches area. However the poster would complain that it does have to do with TX. That is why the facilitator of list gets the big bucks and has to make these decisions. Am I missing something here? Why are projects not allowed but Miscellaneous and Topics are allowed? James R. if it says 'genweb' in the mailing list name, it belongs to the project on loan. if it does not say at all - it belongs to Rootsweb and subject to RW's maintenance and list rules. RW owns every one of the lists hosted by RW. Restrictions are not tolerated on non-genweb lists (eg bans against various groups and websites) just because a mailing list is hosted/maintained by a person belonging to a project. These rules have not changed in more than 10 years. Content-Type@lists3.rootsweb.com Does this look like a correct address? that rootsweb would be placing on a list, why would they be subbing when they can do it themselves? Thanks Cara
Cara <cara_links@bigpond.com> wrote: > Content-Type@lists3.rootsweb.com > Does this look like a correct address? that rootsweb would be placing on a > list, why would they be subbing when they can do it themselves? No, not at all. Any legitimate RootsWeb e-mail address wouldn't use lists3 in the domain. It is very unlikely that anyone at RootsWeb would ever attempt to subscribe a RootsWeb address to one of their mailing lists. Even the Listmaster usually sends e-mail from the <support_rootsweb@custhelp.com> address. Content-Type is a standard field from e-mail headers, so this looks like a really bad attempt to create an e-mail address. The spammers usually do a far better and more convincing job of creating e-mail address to send spam from, so a big fail on their part. Cheers Elmo. P.S. Words (with the exception of family names) that are all in capitals are considered to be shouted. Please don't shout in your Subject line, unless you do really mean to shout.
Hi Linda, Rootsweb would not be sending you email about a wire transfer, unless you had made arrangements with them - and therefore had prior knowledge. With that in mind, knowing that you had no such contact with Rootsweb, you know that the email you received absolutely HAS to be spam, without even opening it. The address has been spoofed, it is not from Rootsweb at all. All you should do is delete it and move on. The part you should not share on the list is the link they want you to click on. Hope this helps. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy jowerslh@aol.com said the following on 13/04/2012 5:17 p.m.: > I know now from previous posts to NOT forward a suspicious spam e-mail to the list. Hi all, I noticed my lists are getting a lot of off topic questions about the 1940 census, so asked rootsweb for a 1940 census list. "Pig" has given me permission to post it here, so those who want to can share it with their lists if they feel like "the 1940 census is taking over your list and you'd rather it didn't..." or if you would just like to tell your other subscribers about it. Linda, You're definitely not the only admin to be receiving such e-mails at your personal address. Norton Antivirus has stripped out the attachments from any that come to my address with an attachment, so please don't try to open any that you get. What tends to happen is that the spammers send e-mail to list addresses (which gets caught in pending requests) as well as to the -admin address for the same lists. It is usually the mail addressed to the -admin address that is being sent on directly to the list admins. Rootsweb does not filter this mail in any way. It would be really great if they did, but they don't. Your -admin address was most likely either in the "To", "CC" or "BCC" lines of the spam e-mail you are receiving. Just delete and ignore it. Pay attention to any instructions from Joan Young on how to handle it with your aol account; those accounts have special rules in place regarding mail deleted from spam folders or reported as spam. -- Mary On 4/13/2012 1:17 AM, jowerslh@aol.com wrote: > I know now from previous posts to NOT forward a suspicious spam e-mail to the list. I believe ADOPTABLE lists all are given a temporary password when adopted out and the new admin is instructed to change it to one of their choosing...if they didn't do it maybe many passwords could all be the temp one. The remote possibility that your admin password happens to match that of the other lists could be the cause, but I would have thought that would be highly unlikely. I did check that a blank password didn't work too. Good luck with working this out with RootsWeb staff. It might take some in-depth investigation on their part. One good thing to come out of this is there is now one fewer lists waiting for adoption :-) Cheers Elmo.
