    3. I take part of that back. He says: "I am Don Krieger, a long time resident of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Western Pennsylvania. I am committed to placing as much material as possible at DonsList.net and keeping it accessible and free." He still operates like a spammer. Still wants donations. Janet

    3. Joan, I did a fast Google on Donslist and he has many web pages pushing books and directories for sale and asks for donations on the others. Please give me both his e-mail addys so I can block this spammer before he starts on my lists. 3. be advised he is subbed to phila list under email addy of akadonnew@verizon.net because I got direct reply at 4:43 am I replied him right away with this: you lose! Have you ever thought of the risk you pose for your ISP? Getting it blacklisted because of mass unsubscribing of many subscribers to many lists (848 lists and counting) Social Security is available for free at other sites and they do not ask for donations of $$ to begin with. 2. 2. Wendy- Good advice on the posting of personal information. I've never seen anything quite like this mass poster on LISTS before. Usually this type of post comes on the boards and possibly through the gateway. This guy is nothing if not persistent. I haven't used his site -- it may well be helpful...but I don't care for his tactics and for that reason alone I don't trust him. Joan In a message dated 5/2/2012 12:24:33 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, wendy.howard@gmail.com writes: That's a very strong argument for setting lists up so that the owner/admin approves each new member, and then putting them onto moderation immediately after approval is given. Another one - I had a new member on one of my lists recently post about her family. Her first-ever post on Rootsweb. She gave personal details about herself and close family members who were clearly living. I wrote to her suggesting she rethink the level of detail she revealed to a public forum, and she came back and thanked me for the guidance, appreciating that I'd prevented her from making a newbie mistake she might come to regret. Food for thought. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy

    1. [LO] Update on our mass cross-poster
    2. Remember the donslist guy I wrote about before? Well, in just a little over ONE week since he's showed up on the RootsWeb lists he's amassed a total of 848 messages in the list archives. I know I've tried to explain asking permission to post advertisements and what "off-topic" means but he's just not listening and doesn't care. Tonight after I blocked him on one of my lists he got himself a throwaway Yahoo address subbed and attacked me and unsubbed. Every single one of the 848 messages from him over the past few days is a direct advertisement for his Web site--and really nothing more. Joan

    2. I don't know how many of you admin locality lists but I've been hit over the past few days with hundreds of posts like this one: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/PENNSYLVANIA/2012-04/133521375 9 Some were caught in pending requests because he sent too many at one time and they were blocked. I responded by rejecting them and explained in my rejection notice that the posts were not specifically relevant to the topic of the lists he was trying to post on AND that he was cross-posting to too many lists...not only THAT but he encourages people to reply to him with questions, etc. ON the lists! The difficulty with complaining about his off-topic mass cross-posting AFTER he posts anyway after being told NOT TO, is that people DO find his site "useful" or "helpful" and those who don't grasp the problem with massive cross-posting and advertising on hundreds of lists get upset if/when the admin intervenes. He has caused a great deal of turmoil on my lists so far and he's branching out now to many other lists. This is just a "heads up" that this guy is going state by state, county by county, subbing to lists and posting identical messages/advertisements on every list he can find. Joan

    3. Sandra, The original emails are being sent from 209-234-32-110.unassigned.ntelos.net, which is within your ISP's network address space. As Joan said, your email address is being spoofed, but your ISP's mail server thinks they are legit since they originate within telos.net, so it dutifully reports the failures. 209-234-32-110.unassigned.ntelos.net is either an actual spammer or a user with an infected PC (Zombie). In any case, you should forward an example of what you are getting to your ISP abuse-prevention email address (probably abuse(at)telos.net) so they can take steps to prevent this from happening again. Or call them. 2. Possibly but it could also just mean a spammer spoofed your address in sending out spam and the bounces are coming to YOU. If it only happens this once I'd guess that is all there is to it. If it KEEPS on happening then I'd start to worry. Joan In a message dated 4/28/2012 11:31:17 P.M. 3. Project lists in this case are for organizations that have something to do with genealogy. I requested a mailing list for a personal project of mine years ago and was denied the list and advised to use the state/county list that was already available. It makes sense. 3. I'm a member of WorldGenWeb and yes it does have a mailing list hosted by RootsWeb as do many of the GenWeb projects. I'm not sure which particular list you refer too. There has been little to no discussion on the WorldGenWeb list in the past couple of years, but I have not heard of RootsWeb denying any projects mailing lists. The WorldGenWeb list is only for those people who have something to do with WorldGenWeb just like this one is only for list admins For anyone wondering what GenWeb is: http://www.worldgenweb.org/ http://www.usgenweb.org/ Joan Asche On Wed, Apr 25, 2012 at 5:31 PM, Christina Hunt <chrisnina@gmail.com> wrote: > This comment was posted by a list admin in response to a posting for free > data > on a project website: > > >> This is a WorldGenWeb list. 1. [LO] Lists owned by a project?

    3. Thank you for clarifying David. This is what I understood to be the case. I mispoke when I called it a Project list. It is just a plain County list. Appreciate the answer. 3. David, Not necessarily true, David. I have been Admin of "RIGENWEB" for several years now, and when I adopted the list I contacted RW to get an official ruling on what the topic was before I went further. They said it was the Rhode Island list and had nothing to do with GenWeb, but just to make sure I also asked the Rhode Island SC and got the same answer, so despite the name it is the Rhode Island statewide list. There are more of them as well, such as Connecticut (called "GENCONNECTICUT" right across the border, among others. David E. RW owns every one of the lists hosted by RW. Restrictions are not tolerated on non-genweb lists (eg bans against various groups and websites) just because a mailing list is hosted/maintained by a person belonging to a project. These rules have not changed in more than 10 years. David Samuelsen

    3. David, Could you explain this a bit more? Specifically, what is a "project on loan"? Could you give an example of a "mailing list that is hosted/maintained by a person belonging to a project". If I read what you said correctly, a 'genweb' list can impose restrictions. Is this correct? And lastly, give an example of a 'genweb' list. It's a good thing there is no such thing as a stupid question! <BG> Carl Hommel -----Original Message----- From: W David Samuelsen Sent: Wednesday, April 25, 2012 8:25 PM To: listowners@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [LO] Projects owning lists? if it says 'genweb' in the mailing list name, it belongs to the project on loan. if it does not say at all - it belongs to Rootsweb and subject to RW's maintenance and list rules.
