    2. B. Warner
    3. Hi, Could someone help me? I just got a new computer due to my harddrive crashing on my other computer. I lost all my shortcuts. I'm the administrator/moderator of several mailing lists. I've been able to find and re-bookmark all my list tools pages for all my lists except the Fryman surname list. I know my password once I get there. My problem is I can't figure out how to get there. I've tried modifying URL based on address for my other lists but it hasn't worked for some reason. I probably have the server number wrong. If anyone could help me with get to the FRYMAN Moderator Authentication page where I put in my password, I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks! B. Warner

    3. I wouldn't have any problem with a subber advertising a book either, except that, to me, it opens the door for any spammer to claim..."You let her do it, why not me?" So I don't let anyone do it. Janet On Fri, May 4, 2012 at 6:59 PM, Joe Makowiec <antigonish@makowiec.org> wrote: > At 5-4-2012 01:41 PM, Margaret L. 3. Hi Margaret All the Genealogical Materials mailing lists can be found at http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/Genealogical_Materials/ It certainly would have been nice if the woman had asked your permission before posting. I would be perturbed if someone posted several messages advertising the same book. Lynne -----Original Message----- "Margaret L. So I don't let anyone do it. You're on pretty safe ground if you guide them to post something like this: [I/whoever] have got a new book out on [topic that fits this list]. If you'd like to know more, contact [me/them] at [email/web address]. That way they're sharing that it exists, but not really doing a sales pitch, especially if they aren't mentioning pricing. --pig

If it's on-topic for the list, even if it's posted by the author/editor/publisher, the poster gets a little slack. I've had this happen a couple of times, including right now. In both cases, the originator posted a one-time note about the book and its availability, and it generated some minor discussion of the "That's great!" variety. Given that my list is fairly slow, I have no problem with it.

    3. Kathy: It is not a spammer. The person who posted is a legitimate subscriber to the List. But they are advertising the sale of their new book on the List. I was looking for guidelines as to if this is appropriate. Margaret (who receives LO by Digest and may have missed any other response to my query)

That said, I seem to remember in the past there was a List or Board where such announcements could be posted. Can someone point me to where I can find these guidelines? Margaret

    2. Robert- First find the message in your list's archives and copy the URL where you found it in the archives. Next go here: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/remove and paste in the URL of the message to be removed and click to initiate the removal process. Then click the HELP tab in the RootsWeb masthead at the top of the page--on the right side. Next click the Ask a Question tab at the help site. Let the HelpDesk know you have initiated the removal process and need them to complete the action. In addition you should also place the email address of the compromised subscriber under moderation so it doesn't happen again. Joan In a message dated 5/3/2012 9:27:25 A.M. 2. Delete it and forget it...just don't report it to your ISP as being spam as it could get RootsWeb in trouble thinking they are the spammer. Joan In a message dated 5/3/2012 4:11:38 A.M. Becci Belton ascominc.com sent a message to bowles-admin@rootsweb.com and the message is advertising beautiful russian girls, wanting me to click on a URL. I get that it's spam, through and through. What I don't get is that she's not trying to post to the Bowles list. And it didn't come via the usual number of spams that I have to delete daily after going to the Mailing List Admin Page. Other than deleting it out of my In Box, is there anything other I should be doing with this? 2. Some of his older posts are on-topic for the lists where he's posting however, they all are pretty direct advertisements. The vast majority of the OFF-topic posts he's recently made are either on US state lists or county lists. Joan In a message dated 5/2/2012 3:36:25 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, decann@infionline.net writes: Is anyone aware of him hitting anything other than location list in the USA? Reason I ask, I just put him on the ban list for my USA LOCATION lists ONLY, largely because I am working from a laptop with unfamiliar tools for a week or so until Dell replaces my desktop, and it is difficult for me to do such things for awhile. I have a fair number of location lists in Canada though, plus some surname and topicals, so am wondering if anyone knows of him hitting any of those before I do those as well. Thanks. David

    2. Yes, he is subscribed to both PAPHILAD and PHILLY-ROOTS but moderated on both lists. I have no desire to BAN him or to restrict posts by him other than direct off-topic advertising posts. 3. That's a very strong argument for setting lists up so that the owner/admin approves each new member, and then putting them onto moderation immediately after approval is given. Another one - I had a new member on one of my lists recently post about her family. Her first-ever post on Rootsweb. She gave personal details about herself and close family members who were clearly living. I wrote to her suggesting she rethink the level of detail she revealed to a public forum, and she came back and thanked me for the guidance, appreciating that I'd prevented her from making a newbie mistake she might come to regret. Food for thought. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy JYoung6180@aol.com said the following on 2/05/2012 2:53 p.m.: > Remember the donslist guy I wrote about before?
