Folks: It's OK to change the subject line -- for example to correct a misspelling so people can filter or search by Subject. Really, it is. As I have done in this case, changing Ancest*ry.com (which tried to make a simple point) to Ancestry.com. I understand *typos*, but replies don't have to *repeat* the mistake. I'll not belabor this point further. Darrell

I have recently begun to receive a ton of messages to the admin address for many of my lists. Has this happened to anyone else? It appears to be messages sent to several lists at one time and of course is advertising. Does anyone know how to stop it? Thanks, JanB
P.S. The onslaught of email address hijacking is a lesson to all of us to create stronger passwords. Google on the topic to learn how.
Diana is right! Good Strong Passwords! My sister had given her data to a we-gonna close your account email and DUMB me I used her name as my password. They had my account in minutes. Use upper /lower case letters, symbols and numbers.. never make a word, or saying..... NEVER use the same password on more then one account. I now keep a little black book with all my different passwords and change the password often.... I don't use OE, I go online to my account and read the email there, I do not store emails on my computer ....Free Hotmail has NO tech support... Paid for Hotmail accounts do... Back to original message... Do something to stop the SPAM... at least moderate immediately... I agree that moderation is the best action; I see no reason to unsub the person. I then email them, drawing their attention to the fact that their account appears hijacked. I suggest they change their password, and that usually solves the problem - or at least is has in all cases, so far. In that same email, I let them know I'm putting in a Removal request for the offending message, asking them to confirm the removal when they get the confirmation request. I don't see any reason to make extra work for the HelpDesk by asking them to do it, unless the subscriber fails to confirm the removal, which has yet to happen. Actually, I've been told that if a Removal requests sits a few days without being confirmed, the staff will take a look at the message and go ahead and remove it if they see any reason to do so, which they obviously would do with SPAM. Can someone tell me how to delete a post in the archives. One members email sent spam (they did not know it did). I would like to delete it out of the archives
The article practically disappeared. Did a search, found all other sites linked to this one. The question now being asked - is it for real or a plant to distract? For a more universal answer, use hotmail hijack in google or yahoo and you will get many hits on problems with ( hot mail ). Looks like some other mail would be better to change to since this is such a wide spread disease. I have had a few members using HotMail and had to get gmail just to write to me about being hi jacked and could not access their account. So far since the conception of G mail and using OE for pop, I have been lucky I guess. But I know what Nelda posted is not uncommon. Its hair raising to say the least. As for saving any thing on the web in mail accounts, those messages could be pop to your PC and saved in the HD as well as leaving a copy on the server, thats what I do with G mail. Its saved to my external HD in a folder store off the C drive and not in the OE environment, you can do this simple enough with thunderbird or what ever. Am pretty careful about spelling, but that print on the cell phone is a bit small and I missed the extra "e" but the point and understanding of the original intended message was there and it was * not * misspelled in the link http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-06-05/ancestry-com-said-to-work-with-qatalyst-partners-to-find-buyers.html How ever Mo', in OE, if you add the brackets <> on the ends when you hit return, they are removed from sight. Hi Listowners, Is there a problem with Rootsweb? I have for two days been trying to confirm a removal request from Eng-Somerset list so far nothing has occurred.! The sp-m is still arriving from the infected address -- Regards, TonyM Somersetlad@gmail.com

Hi Joan, LOL I like the "You are ASSuming", Your right nothing is absolute... (Makes me wonder what your calling me??) End of my comments... hope it never happens to you.. nelda
You are ASSuming they won't regain control of the account. that isn't true in many cases. I've had many of these hijacked accounts where all they had to do was change their password and all was right with the world again. I've seen that far more than cases where the account was shut down and rendered inaccessible. Joan In a message dated 7/6/2012 6:51:00 P.M.
