Christina, Sorbs wouldnt be blocking mail going to the Rottsweb list but it would coming from Rootsweb. Do you have anyone else on list with a tesco email address having the same problem? Is she contacting you via the list admin address or your personal address? If the former then there is no problem with the mail going through the list server. My own email address was causing problems with non delivery to a few lists I am on and it turned out because I subbed when I had a full aol account my email address on the server was aol.com yet now i am using it via aim it comes through as.net or as aim.com so I had to resub even though I was receiving mail from the .com address. Could this be the problem here? Hello list - The panic is over. I'd certainly like to thank Darrell and Nelda. Nelda's message made me laugh, and gave me heart. Darrell's gave me the perfect thing to use to explain precisely what we expected in messages. Both gave my co-administrator and me needed reassurance that we were doing the correct thing, as did the reaction from List members. We've received many "thank yous". We can now breathe, as can the entire list. Thanks once again. Julia PS - we're taking your advice about rules, absolutely, and will send them out once a year to remind everyone. Nelda's advice : > Write her a nice polite email reminding her of your list rules /why she will be removed, and Rules if you don't have any write some now, leave her on moderation...until she stops sending flames or remove her. > > Send the rules out.. Another possibility ... does she have a typo in the @rootsweb.com part of the address? A typo before the @ would bounce as "no such user" or something similar, and would come from RootsWeb. But AFTER the @, "not connected" might make sense (as in, tesco.net couldn't hand mail off to rotosweb.com or whatever.) K.

Julia: Don't beat yourself up about this, but I think you waited *WAY* too long to moderate the list. (Call it a learning experience.) If I get one personal attack on list, I moderate the author. If it's bad enough, I moderate the list immediately, as well; with the appearance of a second, I moderate that person and ALWAYS the list. Depending on the severity, after the first or second offensive post I send a polite but firm reminder to the list that a) this behavior is not acceptable, and why; b) I am handling it; and c) *NO* further comment about the incident is permitted ON LIST. Of course, since the list would then be on moderation, all that c) tells me is who isn't grasping the concept. I invite discussion with me, personally and off-list, with NO consequences. I have never received anything so bad I would have reported it to the author's ISP, which would be the only exception to the "no consequences" rule. My lists are accustomed to my "no discussion of admin matters on list" rule, but when I first instituted it it could take as long as 36 hours for my reminder to take effect. (Many people wait a while to check their e-mail, and read and answer messages in the order received.) I usually leave the list on moderation for two or three days, depending on what is coming through pending. Here are two of my list rules that are relevant to this discussion. I have eight rules overall, which haven't changed in ages. You can see them at: <http://home.sprynet.com/~darrellm/list_rules.htm> --------------------- 4. Be polite. You may contradict any idea expressed on this list as vigorously as you like, if your language is cordial and non-personal and you are not disrupting the list as a whole. Another way of putting it, is this: if you flame, you’re gone. It doesn’t matter who you are, or how much you believe you have contributed to the list. 5. Praise publicly, complain privately. Except to provide evidence correcting statements of fact, all criticism of others or their messages should be sent to me, privately. Another exception: if I should happen to say something you like as admin, don't clutter up the list with the e-mail equivalent of the Parliamentary "Hear, Hear!" --------------------- For what it may be worth. Darrell
Julia, Write her a nice polite email reminding her of your list rules /why she will be removed, and Rules if you don't have any write some now, leave her on moderation...until she stops sending flames or remove her. Send the rules out.. If there is no bitching unmoderate the list.. bitching leave on moderation... In your rules set a limit on how many flames - Like One warning on moderation/ second flame they are removed.. As far as getting notification of emails.. check twice a day.. don't worry they aren't getting email immediately.. that is part of the control of moderation. Your not paid to admin a list - you volunteer... so they can wait on you or behave. Nelda Today well lived - makes every yesterday a dream of happiness, and every tomorrow a vision of hope. Hello - My list was experiencing flaming, and messages which would have been expected in a schoolyard, not a site for genealogists. People started 'unsubbing', 2 resigned from the organization, and I received numerous complaints about one person in particular. So I used Emergency Moderation, after sending a message to the list. Sure enough I just received a private email from that self-same person, complaining she had sent a message 6 hrs before, and had not seen it on the list. I had not received any notification there was a pending message, but when I went into the administration page, there the message was. Sure enough, it was rude!!! She just doesn't understand the word polite - and she's a teacher!! By the way, hers was the ONLY message the list has received. Anyway, how have other List Admins handled this? Do you leave moderation on for all the list? Do you decide which persons are the main offenders, and only moderate them? How often are the Admins notified there is a message pending? Greg- I didn't say she wasn't connected to the Internet...I said it sounds like that is what the bounce is saying. If it is only happening with RootsWeb mail (mail sent TO RootsWeb) there may be an issue between the ISP and RootsWeb or they may be blocking mail sent to RootsWeb for some reason. In any case the problem is on the sender's end and not at RootsWeb if the mail never reaches RootsWeb and bounces back without being sent...which is what the error message appears to be saying. That sounds like she is being told by her ISP that she's not connected to the Internet and therefore can't send emails. Is this ONLY happening with LIST mail or ALL mail she tries to send? If it is ONLY RootsWeb mail she needs to talk to her ISP to see why they are not allowing her to send mail TO RootsWeb. Since the mail is never leaving her ISP RootsWeb can't help...only her ISP can solve the problem. Joan In a message dated 11/24/2012 4:38:35 P.M. I sent the following to the Boards Admin list yesterday, but have as yet received no response, so perhaps one of the clever people on this list might be able to help..... The Dorset county message board is gatewayed to the mailing list (I am the admin for both) and recently a thread was gatewayed from halfway through, with the earliest messages missing. The first one had an attachment; could this be a part of the explanation? I have always understood that attachments were stripped out just as HTML is before forwarding to the list. Can someone suggest an explanation for this, and/or anything I could do to rectify it? The thread on the board starts here: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.dor.general/6402/mb. ashx. This and five subsequent messages were not gatewayed to the list, and this made the first gatewayed message quite nonsensical. The list archives show the first message in the thread to be gatewayed here: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/DORSET/2012-11/1353526928. Any and all suggestions welcome. Hi, Yesterday was the Thanksgiving holiday in the US and today is Black Friday a traditional Christmas shopping event so you can expect discussions to be down. Did you check the pending files to see if they go stuck there? I've never seen this happened... but. It's also possible that mail delivery to the lists is messed up -- that I have seen happen. Unfortunately, that's all I can offer. Dee, Lynne's suggestion might work. If it doesn't or if it doesn't pertain to you (like not on the ban list), try unsubscribing yourself entirely. Wait about five minutes, then sub scribe yourself again and see if it then works as it should. A friend of mine had a similar problem some time ago, and when she did that it worked fine afterwards. I have no clue in the world why doing that would fix it, but it did at least in her case. Good luck. David E.
