I have been writing to the AUS-QLD list for some time and just now I had an email rejected, and it seemed to indicate that it was spam Greg
Greg wrote: > I have been writing to the AUS-QLD list for some time and just now I had > an email rejected, and it seemed to indicate that it was spam What was the wording? You can send it off list if you'd prefer. If you put the IP address into an IP look up site, you can find out if it has been blocked for that reason. It's unlikely though since you can reach this list - unless you have another address you use for posting. Spam blocking usually only lasts a few days providing the spammer doesn't send more through that IP block. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Ashcott, Shapwick, Greinton and Clutton, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk
Marg, It is quite possible that the email never made it out of his own ISP/email provider. One possibility for this is the sending of too many emails in a specified length of time. Only way to know for sure is to see the headers of the bounce to see if it actually left his ISP/email provider or not. I had that happen many years ago reason given "Too many emails sent in one day...possible spam." Now I very rarely send emails so it is highly unlikely I would ever get that bounce again. Hope this helps, Lainee -----Original Message----- From: MargM Sent: Tuesday, April 02, 2013 6:30 AM To: gdav99@live.com.au ; LISTOWNERS@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [LO] AUS-QLD list ----- Original Message ----- From: "Greg" <gdav99@live.com.au> To: <LISTOWNERS@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 02, 2013 9:21 PM Subject: [LO] AUS-QLD list >I have been writing to the AUS-QLD list for some time and just >now I had > an email rejected, and it seemed to indicate that it was spam Hi Greg I am not aware of any message bounce posted to the Qld list from your email address ?? There may be something else in the bounce message that gives an idea where the original is going before being forwarded. If you can't find the subscriber, ask onlist for the person using peter.wong4356 to contact you OFFLIST. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Ashcott, Shapwick, Greinton and Clutton, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk
Asking onlist probably won't help, since the intended party won't receive that message. -- Mary On 3/21/2013 5:00 AM, Charani wrote: > Tony wrote: >> Hello , >> >> Please tell me why I am consistently receiving a copy of this message, >> when the person mentioned is NOT a subscriber to the list in question. >> Any messages sent to the list are followed with this failed delivery >> notice >> >> QUOTE. Probably a forwarding address. Do you have the full headers of the bounce? There should be an ERRORS TO field and that should tell you the subscribed address. I can't prove it, Elmo, but I've suspected the ones we've seen from AOL subscribers could also be caused by the same...almost all of them are the free AOL Web mail users and not actual paying AOL users using the software to get their AOL mail. Charani wrote: > I've seen the same but I don't know whether it is another hack attack > or the hackers/ spammers selling on the addresses they've harvested. The majority of these malware messages are caused by a fault (possibly multiple faults) in Yahoo Webmail, which are being exploited by the spammers. The messages that getting to the Mailing Lists are being sent by genuine subscribers to those lists (I am also receiving a lot of these malware messages directly.) The spam messages are generated while people are logged in to Yahoo webmail and they visit (usually by following one of these malware links) an infected website. I suspect that there are many genuine websites that have been compromised too, that is harder to prove, especially as site owners are reluctant to admit they have been affected. To avoid this Yahoo Webmail users need to avoid visiting any web site while they are still logged into webmail (which means they can't open an URL directly from an e-mail.) Better still would be for them to not use Webmail at all, but this would require a lot of people to change their habits. There is a more complicated solution that allows safer use of webmail, but currently that requires using an extendable browser with an add-on like No Script, which is most probably too complicated for most users. I am sure that the spammers are also harvesting all the addresses that the malware links are being sent to, so I wouldn't be surprised if the basic spam rates increase this year. Nivard, Please remember to delete all addresses in the old Sky/Yahoo account so that they won't be there for hackers to use. Then there's the folk who shut down or even uninstall their firewall because it stopped them getting to a site they wanted to visit. Er, why exactly does a firewall prevent access? Most of the scans on my machines take about an hour. Since it takes me at least that long to do the shopping, I set the scan going and go out. By the time I get back and sorted out, I can use my machine again :)) It only takes a little planning. > People really need to learn a little about their computers before > they're allowed to use them. You're not the first to say that and I doubt you'll be the last. I'm just not sure who ought to be giving the advice, not when the people I bought my first computer told me I didn't need a firewall! Nothing was said about anti virus or anything like that. My late sister, who knew /everything/ about computers, also said only businesses needed firewalls. It was someone in a chatroom set up by my then ISP that was talking about computer security and the programs needed, leading to a flurry of activity and a lot of downloads! Since then I've learned a lot more about computers, including not to listen to anyone who knows /everything/ about them <VBG> -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Ashcott, Shapwick, Greinton and Clutton, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk
Correct I was given the warning from Sky a few months ago that all Sky accounts will be turned over to Yahoo accounts but retain the same email addresses and each time I visit I am prompted to accept their (Yahoos) terms and conditions So I have created a new Gmail account and will unsub all lists and sub with the new one I will then accept the new account but not use it to send from to enable me to receive replies and contact from old posts If the new terms and conditions are not accepted the Sky account will be closed and all saved mail in the web account lost Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 10/03/2013 22:37, W David Samuelsen wrote: > You telling us SKY of UK is passing their accounts to Yahoo instead of > Gmail taking over the accounts permamently? > > David Samuelsen
