    2. Notify? Not sure what you mean by that. If you are adminning a list hopefully you are subscribed to the list and you will receive every post made to the list in L mode. If you have moderated a list member you will get daily notices of any attempts they have made to post in your pending requests. Joan In a message dated 12/1/2011 1:46:39 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, gen-quest@comcast.net writes: If that was happening on one of my lists, I would put the list on moderation for awhile so I could screen the messages before they went to the list members. Of course, you would have to set the "notify" function so that every time a post was made to the list, you received an immediate notice so as not to penalize the other list members.

    2. Marie- Yes...and if the problem continues you may wish to review all requests to subscribe and place new subscribers on moderation until you feel you can trust them. I don't suggest this as a PERMANENT solution but it may be needed temporarily. Joan In a message dated 12/1/2011 1:08:07 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, rwlistsboards@comcast.net writes: I recently unsubbed and banned a list member who went ballistic over another list member's unkind post about him. The person who posted the message that angered this guy has been placed on moderation and has been behaving himself. The angry guy (who was on permanent moderation because of his penchant for criticizing folks on the list) sent me twenty-four irate emails in a three day period of time - sixteen of them in a six-hour time span. He complained to the HelpDesk and demanded that RootsWeb remove the mailing list entirely. IMHO, a really over-the-top reaction on his part. This guy has subbed to my list with eight or more other email addresses over the past few months in an effort to circumvent moderation, and now he's doing so to circumvent being banned from the list. He has a very distinctive writing style that reflects his personality, so it's pretty easy to tell when it's him subbing under a new address. Generally what he does is sub and post a complaint or jump into an existing discussion and start a debate. Anyway, whatever email address he uses and whatever name he signs his messages with, the IP address is exactly the same in the message headers. Would it be within my rights as admin to unsub and ban these other addresses as well? -Marie

    3. Hi Marie I would ban each of his new addresses as you discover them as long as you're sure they belong to him. To avoid having to vet each and every message to the list, you could set your list so that you have to approve all new subscriptions. Put the new subscribers on moderate until their first message is vetted or until you learn that the address is not owned by your miscreant. You could use the archives search engine to check to see if the new subscribers are/were subbed to other lists and then those addresses wouldn't have to be moderated. At least that has been my experience...that is where the replies are coming from to let me know the spam has been deleted. Joan In a message dated 11/23/2011 7:27:37 P.M. First thing to do is to moderate the user it came from. Removal is a 3-step process: - Go to the archives of your list and find the URI of the offending message. For my list, the archive page for November is http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index/CAN-NS-ANTIGONISH/2011-11. Clicking on one of the messages will leave the URI in the address bar of your browser. Copy it. - Go to this page and enter the URI you found in the previous step: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/remove and click the submit button. - From that page, click on the 'Help' button on the upper right. That will take you to the FAQ page. On the FAQ page are two tabs: 'Answers' (the one that's open) and 'Ask a Question'. Click on 'Ask a Question'. 'Ask a Question' is the email form page; clicking on the tab will take you to this page: http://rootsweb.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/rootsweb.cfg/php/enduser/ask.php?p_sid=nWfsccJk&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPSZwX3NvcnRfYnk9JnBfZ3JpZHNvcnQ9JnBfcm93X2NudD0yMjEsMjIxJnBfcHJvZHM9JnBfY2F0cz0mcF9wdj0mcF9jdj0mcF9zZWFyY2hfdHlwZT1hbnN3ZXJzLnNlYXJjaF9ubCZwX3BhZ2U9MQ!! Or, shortened: http://preview.tinyurl.com/emailAncestry Fill in the fields as appropriate; your message would be something like "I'm the administrator for can-ns-antigonish list. I just initiated removal of a spam message from my list's archive. Could you please complete the removal?" My experience has been that they get to it in anywhere from a day to three days, although tomorrow is US Thanksgiving holiday, so it may take a bit longer.

    2. Good start...next place the poster on moderated status so it can't happen again -- any attempt will be blocked in your pending requests where you can reject it and notify the poster about the problem. To remove the post from the archives, go to the archives and copy the URL where the spam post is located. Then go here to the removal tool: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/remove Paste in the URL of the spam post to be removed. Then contact the HelpDesk and let them know about it so they can complete the removal process. Joan In a message dated 11/23/2011 3:17:27 P.M. 2. I guess it is too early in the day for me to scroll all the way to the bottom. <g> Thanks, Mary. Yes, they are exactly the same which would indicate if, as Mary stated they are not the SAME copy, then the subscriber MUST have a setting in her mail client to send a copy to two different folders -- whatever, it would be on her end since a person can't be subbed twice under the exact same address and both copies were definitely showing the same subscriber address.
