OK, so now we have all this really unnecessary [expletive deleted] "text" in the archives twice, which is two times too many, surely. PSW Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless handheld
Greetings: Since so many people attempt to post to RootsWeb lists, or on the boards, asking for an opinion on the same subjects, I thought I would save them some time. When in doubt, you can always go to the Rootsweb homepage. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ The link under "Help" should take you where you want. I'm in the position that I want to clear my commitment of some Roots Web mail lists and want to put up for adoption all the following: They are all VERY quiet: CANADIAN-TRAIN- DISASTERS MERCHANT MARINE RI-CEMETERIES SCBATTLES TN-MYSTERIES TX-CEMETERY-RESEARCH TX-MYSTERIES TX-VINTAGEPHOTOS VT-CEMETERIES Frederick M. Dittmar Diggin' Deep Genealogy Research Service PO Box 2601 Norman, Oklahoma 73070 Member -Oklahoma Genealogical Society - http://www.okgensoc.org/ Board Member - OKOLHA - http://www.okolha.net List Administrator for 99 mail lists. 32 State-Ghost Towns / 21 Oklahoma- / 13 Family Surnames / 12 Miscellaneous / 8 Canadian & 12 Province & Territories Ghost Towns lists.
I've discovered a half dozen or so lists (so far) that I fell off of, including two that I admin, but I will check the rest of them and deal with all that tomorrow when it's not so late and I can do it properly. This is kind of in the category of lose/lose but when the block started I posted that Earthlink users whose list mail was being blocked should get a list of all subscribed lists from MyAccount...since Password Central wasn't a viable option because they wouldn't get the email. Of course, those who were blocked wouldn't see the email advising that they get a list of subscribed lists. <g> I would imagined only the busiest lists would be ones you might have been unsubbed from. Try to check on the lists you normally receive mail from on a daily basis...it won't be ALL of them. Joan In a message dated 2/2/2012 6:23:46 P.M. On lists whose admins do not monitor unsubs, we Earthlink subscribers are going to be scrambling to get resubscribed. Ask me how I know.... :( Note: Not all Earthlink subscribers have @earthlink addresses. I would be one of those people with a seeming mismatch (I have had this sprynet address since the early 1990s). I am not calling it a disaster, but this is a real mess for me. I have other things to do. Note 2: It is easy to see which lists I *admin*, using Password Central. There is no apparent effect there, which is not surprising. But I subscribe to ... or used to subscribe to ... a number of lists that I do not admin. One in particular has been getting dozens of messages a day (software, with a major upgrade in late December). I was wondering what had happened. Darrell

Same here...I monitor all the subs and unsubs and I never received any. I have gone through about half of my lists today and found 2 so far that I had to resub myself to. but most of my lists are quite slow. I will finish going through my lists tomorrow...at least to see which lists I myself bounced off of. Lainee <----wishing she had a magic 8 ball to tell her which lists she needs to go resub to! If you want to moderate an individual, you go to the membership list and check the mod box then save the change. If you want the moderate the whole list on a temporary basis (eg a a couple of days for a specific problem), you can use the emergency moderation option which is on the general options page and again save the change. If you don't save the required change, it won't happen. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Greinton and Clutton, SOM Asst OPC for Ashcott and Shapwick, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk http://www.savethegurkhas.co.uk/
Joan, Gerhard is wonderful. Cannot say enough nice things about how he handles these problems. I am dealing with one AOL user now who belongs to MANY lists and who has been hacked and just spammed everybody: 1) "I didn't do it" "They can't get to my account to use it to spam people." 2) "If I did do it, it is not my fault if I didn't bother to change my password after all the warnings over the last year because they didn't apply to me". 3)" It won't do any good to change my password now cause it will just happen again". 4) The Administrator [me!] is paranoiac, too strict, mini-hysterical and a couple of other wonderful things. He stays on Moderate. he really is a helpful ole dude, but sure doesn't want to be wrong here. Janet
You can put specific posters on MOD in the member list check MOD for them You can for a "short time" put the entire list on MOD Under general options Emergency moderation of all list traffic. ========= Is there a command for moderating messages on my list? I want to delete spam before it goes out to the group. Thanks
We DO do that and Gerhard's notice when he unsubs the person explains what they need to do to resolve the problem. The infected emails that hit the list from these hijacked accounts have an affect on more than just the poster...they can result in other subscribers becoming infected if they click the links blindly without thinking and it also can get other innocent people unsubbed from lists if they accidentally report the spam as BEING SPAM to to their ISP and the ISP reports back to RootsWeb that this person said RW mail was spam. I can understand this if all lists had no admin to use MOD. Just my ideas.
