David: If memory serves correctly, 10 years ago there was much less anticipation of *immediate online* availability of the data, and still there was a *LOT* of discussion. At least on the lists I subscribed to but did not admin. > Answers to your questions. This is an illustration of exactly how people do not always understand what is being asked, and things get out of hand. I *KNOW* the answers to each of the questions. I am not at all interested in reading the answers ... again ... but in a discussion of how my fellow admins plan on dealing with the issue of the questions being asked, probably repeatedly (if they plan on dealing with the issue at all). ... > 5. And, "we are from the government and we are here to help" and "the check is in the mail". Ask anybody who dealt with the computer system at the Census Bureau during the 2010 federal enumeration. I am one who did. But hey, maybe this time it will be true! ... Darrell
Greetings: I am contemplating "banning" conversations about the 1940 Census on my surname and county lists. Not about what is seen *ON* the census (the contents), that would be silly! I'm talking about - How do I get access? - Is NARA better than Ancestry.com? - Why doesn't it open?? - How can I make it bigger on screen? - Why is it so slow?!??!@#$% I am going to post links to the NARA. I *may* pre-emptively post the E.D. information for each county. I waffle back and forth between just letting things go on one hand, and moderating each list for a short while on the other, with lots of options in between. The middle ground is probably something like announcing the temporary rule and then watching like a hawk to see which lists get out of hand. The simplest, but the most work, is using moderation. What do the rest of you think about this? Darrell
It will not be off topic at all and will not be moderated. There are still many who have not signed on to volunteer to index. https://www.familysearch.org/1940census Indexes created by volunteers will be shared through FamilySearch, brightsolid.com and archives.com Other than that,I will watch for any discussion that might spiral out of control. Let's see 10 years ago when 1930 came out, there wasn't much discussions either. Answers to your questions. 1 and 2 Free access and it's hosted by archives.com (not NARA) and with links from FamilySearch.com and brightsolid.com 3. They will open without much problem because archives.com already prepared for the load courtesy of improvements in technology. 4. They're scalable. 5. It won't be slow and only slow if you're dependent on local dialup service. BTW, ED nformation is already posted. http://www.stevemorse.org/ Even the census tract maps for counties and cities, too. Yes. Either you or the poster can go the removal form here: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/remove and paste in the URL of the post in the archives and click to initiate the removal. An email is then sent to the POSTER who must respond to the confirmation notice to complete the removal. Since the poster owns their own posts they are the only ones who can complete the removal process for their posts (except in the case of abuse/spam where staff can complete the removal). Generally, the URL of the removal form isn't made public so as not to create a "run" on poster removals, but can be made known on a need to know (or request) basis. That's the address you use to subscribe and unsubscribe. Use this one: andersonville@rootsweb.com Note that capitals don't matter. :-) Save it in your address book off a post you receive from the list (that ensures there are no typos in it) and use that for future posts for accuracy. Is your mail service handled by Gmail? Some services, including Gmail, do not return a copy of the post to the sender - it knows you've already got a copy in your mailbox. Hi Kevin, What address exactly did you send your post to? Is it possible you made a mistake, so it didn't reach the proper destination? Are you subscribed to the list yourself? List owners are not automatically subscribed when they're given the list to look after. Thank you. I thought so, but I wanted to be certain. I'm putting it in my address book, although I hope this is the only time I've ever needed it. That'd be a good place to start, but I would try to resolve it with the other admin first if that was feasible. David E. Hi Pat, Are you talking about spam that is reaching your list, and visible in the archive, or spam that is reaching you as the list owner? If spam is reaching your list, it must be coming from people (or a person) who is subscribed to it. Put those people on moderation immediately, or unsubscribe them altogether. It is probably due to their email account being hacked, rather than them themselves sending it. If spam is reaching you as the list owner, you can reduce that. Go to your list's Tools, and go to Privacy Options > Accept List. At the option "Action to take for postings from non-members for which no explicit action is defined", and select Discard. This will remove mail sent to listname-request@rootsweb.com that the system cannot interpret as a proper request (subscribe, etc). Hope this helps. Please give us more information if you need more assistance from us. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy Howard On Sat, Feb 25, 2012 at 6:00 PM, Pat <patcreel@cableone.net> wrote: > > Hello, I am brand new to list. Your email included a YouTube video which is what was messing you up. A sig line and links are okay but the YouTube vid won't go. Sincerely, Joan A. Thanks all.. Joan hit the nail on the head. Once I removed my signature with links the message went through. I had always been able to send my links attached as a subscriber so now Im curious what that caused the problems. Anyway, thanks to all the suggestions. Kevin Andersonville listowner
