    3. You could do the same quite easily by using the lists archives Why doesn't it happen on a grand scale? To much work as your suggestion would be, there are easier ways so why would they make life difficult for themselves ? 2. Actually you COULD but you would have to do it manually...you couldn't do it with a spider which would read the code as noted below but not the actual addresses. 2. Yeah...and the last time (and it's been YEARS ago) I can recall someone subscribing for a nefarious purpose it wasn't to harvest email addresses for spamming. There are FAR easier ways to get addresses for mass spammers than subbing to mailing lists. I DO remember a mass subscriber quite a few years ago with a "strange" address subbing to gather list messages to archive the lists off RootsWeb which would be against RootsWeb's AUP and a violation of the posters' copyright. I seriously doubt that is happening at the present time but you never know. Joan In a message dated 3/8/2012 5:32:20 P.M. 3. What a great way to harvest e-mail addresses! Subscribe to as many mailing lists as possible and then collect all the subscribers' addresses from received mail. A simple program could be written to do this without actually having to read a single message. Furthermore you never have to *send* a message so moderation doesn't prevent this. Beware for what the future portends.... Cheers! -- Dave -- David Naylor, Halton Hills, Ontario, Canada. ---

But, I do not see anything that is even the tiniest bit odd in what you said, except that you think something is odd! Two things have been consistently reported on LO about this (very common-looking) address. 1. He has subscribed to a number of lists. 2. He hasn't done anything else. Now, I am *NOT* talking about admins who routinely moderate every new subscriber. That is an approach that I would never take myself, but at least I understand it. That is a system, a procedure. It does not require any speculation about what a new subscriber MIGHT be up to. What I am saying is that suspicion about this one innocuous looking address is spreading here on LO like news of a Mayflower passenger nobody had heard of before. Not everyone is buying it -- not everyone is even interested -- but it threatens to become one of those seeming "facts" that a lot of admins have at least heard about, always in a negative context. If someone subscribing and doing nothing is worthy of concern, then I have a awful lot of work to do with my member lists. I don't get it. It reminds me of the Veggie Tales episode, "The Rumor Weed". 3. He has subscribed to four of my lists over the past few weeks, which I've approved and put him on moderation immediately - as I do for all new members until they've posted and demonstrated that they're "genuine". By "genuine" I mean that I'm not fussy about what/how they post - anything about genealogy and on-topic for the list, which is not spam, passes my test. Most, including Migs, never post, of course. <sigh> Wendy Jim Jackson said the following on 8/03/2012 11:11 a.m.: > I have seen the address miguelmigsplus@gmail.com subscribe to quite a number > of lists I admin as well as those I serve as an assistant admin. I would suggest approving the request, but putting the address on moderation until you have the opportunity to read their fist posting. I do this with all new subscribers to my list anyway.
