    3. Yes, I have learned quite a lot today. Thank you to those of you who accepted my ignorance and allowed me to learn yet another "new thing" and my apologies to those who were upset or, at least, stirred up by all this. I especially am grateful to Janet for her understanding and allowing me to grow a little more. Since I started all this I hope I can put it to rest now with the above statements. Anyone who wishes to "tongue lash" me in private is welcome to do so. I will get my "thick skin" ready. :) Jim -----Original Message----- From: listowners-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:listowners-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of W David Samuelsen Sent: Saturday, March 10, 2012 1:56 PM To: listowners@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [LO] The "New List" messages Jim, you're in for a surprise. 3. OK, folks, I am here and one of the new admins of the new list. I am also admin of 4 other Rootsweb lists. I asked Rootsweb for this list and told them the purpose, and they gave me [approved] the list. I have announced it to, and only to, some other administrators whose subbers might have an interest, i.e. certain surnames involved. It is up to the admins of the surname lists involved whether they want to let their subbers know about the new list or not, although I think it will be of a benefit to them to do so ultimately. What other questions might you all have? Janet

Jim didn't say he thought Janet was up to no good, he just wondered whether complying with the request was appropriate. Janet, as you said, simply made a request to a few admins, privately. When her request was discussed here on LO, she dropped us all a line to give us more information. Nothing out of the ordinary in any of this, in fact a commendably polite exchange. But fair is fair, I spy on them too. How else would I be able to head off a hostile takeover of MARTIN-QC-NEWENG, its 42 subscribers, and last message in 2008??? * * * with tongue firmly in cheek * * * Darrell

    3. If we don't ask, we can't find answers. If we don't have answers, we might make the wrong decisions about things. You may call it paranoia but I call it attempting to do the best job I can as an admin. If I make uninformed decisions I cannot be sure I am making the right ones. You may have all the answers but I sometimes need to ask. Call it being human. Just replyin' . . . And since it is genealogy-related, I did forward the announcement to the list in question. Side note: there sure does seem to be a lot of paranoia on this list lately -- new subscribers, new lists . . . What's next? Will we be assuming new admins join up for some nefarious purpose? I think the primary purpose of RootsWeb mailing lists is to provide a forum in which information about the list topic can be shared. If the requested announcement is pertinent to your list's topic, and it is your policy to permit such, in general, I see no problem with the announcement (with added comments as you see fit). For me, the relationship with FamilyTreeDNA is totally irrelevant. The far and away most active RootsWeb list to which I subscribe -- averaging over 1,000 messages per month for the last six months -- discusses The Master Genealogist. TMG is a direct competitor to Family Tree Maker -- which is owned by the Ancestry/RootsWeb family of companies. Darrell

    3. See what I mean? I never said I have all the answers. I just said there's a lot of suspicion lately about perfectly ordinary things. If she had subscribed to our lists and just posted the announcement without asking, there would have been complaints. But she does the proper thing, and asks first, and that's not welcomed, either. Darned if you do, and darned if you don't. On 3/10/2012 9:14 AM, Jim Jackson wrote: > If we don't ask, we can't find answers.
